Chapter 180: Finding Gifts For The King

For Lazarus, the thugs on the land were nothing compared to pirates, who were often more cruel when robbing the ships they encountered.

And spending most of his life at sea, Lazarus trained to be more agile. Plenty of times, he had been challenged by sea pirates around the world, and not once was Lazarus defeated.

Lazarus rode quietly. He looked at the bustling city in front of him in awe. He had not had time to leave the palace after his return to the capital. Many women had been waiting for him, and that made him feel even more excited.

The streets in the city were very wide, and the cobblestone streets could be seen because they had been cleaned by local residents. All the snow piles had been brushed aside.

Arielle lowered her side window to see the crowds of people in the North. She remembered one or two of the same buildings she had encountered on the night of the festival that time.

The carriage stopped at a jewellery store. Lucas opened the door for Arielle. After getting off the carriage, she looked around to analyze all the rows of shops in front of her.

From the far end, she could see several women’s clothing stores. Starting from a few brightly coloured party dresses on display in the window, to very simple dresses.

"I will pick up a package here. If you wish, would you like to come in to have a look?" Lucas asked her.

Arielle, who was too amazed by the scene in front of her, just nodded. She followed Lucas’ steps as they entered the jewellery store. Lazarus also followed behind and stood guard near the entrance.

Arielle refrained from expressing her admiration. For the first time in her life, Arielle saw a room filled with sparkling gems and almost every time she turned her head, her eyes would be dazzled by the array of fine metal jewellery and beautiful gemstones.

Arielle would never be able to afford those things. Maybe her siblings could, but she never would. The girl’s attention was fixated on red gemstone earrings with a teardrop shape. The blood-red colour gleamed so beautifully that it reminded Arielle of Ronan’s eye colour.

She wondered what if Ronan wore the earrings? Wouldn’t it be so beautiful?

She touched her own earlobe. There were no puncture marks on her ear because Arielle had never worn any earrings.

Arielle didn’t have a lot of jewellery. All she had were two simple necklaces and a ring. She also never wore them because the girl had never been to a royal party before, not after the incident when she was found at the edge of the forest in the past.

Arielle turned to the side to see a necklace with a similar diamond shape. It looked like a set, Arielle thought. Then Arielle went to look at the row of pins on the glass display case. Lots of shapes and colours made Arielle confused to choose.

Even until Lucas came back with the package, Arielle hadn’t finished looking at each one.

"If you want it, why not just ask His Majesty the King to get them for you?" Lucas asked, hugging his package tightly.

Arielle shook her head. "I’m not looking for myself. I’m looking for inspiration, what gift I can give to His Majesty the King," said the girl. "What are you holding? Is it a gift for Ronan? May I know what’s in it? So that we don’t give the same thing later."

Arielle was hoping that Lucas would tell her what gift he gave Ronan.

"Of course, Your Highness, I can tell you what this is, as long as you don’t reveal this to His Majesty the king."

Arielle chuckled and nodded enthusiastically.

"I promise," she answered.

Lucas then pulled the small rope that tied the package. Lucas carefully unfolded the brown paper that was wrapped around it. There was a small black box. Lucas opened it, and Arielle’s mouth was agape.

Arielle was surprised and amazed at the gift that Lucas had prepared. It was a gold brooch with a few small red gemstones added to form a rose.

"This is very beautiful," said Arielle, making Lucas blush.

"I hope His Majesty the King will like it. I ordered this because it reminded me of one of the brooches he wore on one of his missing sleeve buttons. And I gave a little modification here," Lucas pointed at a very beautiful red rose.

The gift was too good, and Arielle felt any other brooches, pins or jewelry would not be a good present for her to give. No matter how sincere Arielle was, Arielle would not be able to give anything better than what Lucas had.

Arielle then crossed the list of jewellery from her head. Well, she was a little relieved too, because her money would never be able to afford it.

Lazarus, who had been watching the girl, nodded in understanding. He then approached Arielle and asked.

"Have you been confused about ideas for His Majesty the King’s birthday present?" asked Lazarus so suddenly. He made Arielle, who was talking with Lucas, flinched in surprise.

"Eh? Y-yes," answered Arielle nervously. "As a matter of fact, I have."

Lazarus snapped his fingers. "Why didn’t you ask me earlier? I can always know what that guy wants! Every year Ronan always compliments the gifts I give. Then come with me!"

Lazarus invited Arielle and quickly went out of the jewellery shop.

Lucas and Arielle stared at each other. "I think what Sir Lazarus said is true. I heard that His Majesty the king can always forgive Sir Lazarus’ mistakes because he can please His Majesty the king with the gifts he gives."

"Then we should go with him, shall we?" asked Arielle, and Lucas nodded.

"I think so," he said in agreement.

Lazarus, who had already left the shop first, went back and poked his head between the entrance.

"Come on!" he asked, a little impatiently making Arielle chuckle amused.

First, they entered a clothing store, and Arielle immediately touched Lazarus’ arm to stop him. The dresses in the shop looked very expensive. The stitch and ruffles of the layers of fabric were made very carefully. The silk was so soft, that it reflected the light beautifully.

"It seems very expensive here," said Arielle, embarrassed to reveal her financial condition to Lazarus.

"Huh? Of course, it’s expensive because it’s Ronan’s regular store. All his royal clothes are made by this shop," replied Lazarus, who had not caught Arielle’s code just now.

"Not here, we’ll just find another place," said Arielle, who started to panic because the shop owner had left the door of his room.

"Sorry!" cried Arielle, who then grabbed Lazarus out of the shop.

Lucas, who was on guard in front of the shop, was surprised because the door opened very wide and showed Arielle who was dragging Lazarus out.

"But Princess, this is the palace’s regular tailor. I think for your first gift, you can choose some handkerchiefs here by writing your name on them using real gold thread."

"No, let’s find something else."

Arielle continued to reject Lazarus’ opinion. The girl squeezed her pocket, which felt very thin. She had borrowed Tania’s money too, but there was nothing she could buy there. She was just too poor and all the gifts here were too expensive for her pocket.
