Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 74: "Are You Regretting It? Regretting Not Marrying Rory Linden?
When Miles Harrison arrived at the police station, Lucy Shaw was still giving her statement.
As the victim, he spoke with an officer to get an update on the situation.
The officer briefed him on the progress of the investigation.
Andre Jennings had been arrested the day before. During his interrogation, he had confessed to certain things, which was why the police had brought Lucy Shaw in.
"So Andre Jennings and Lucy Shaw knew each other?"
Miles Harrison was a little surprised.
The officer nodded, confirming that the two did indeed know each other. However, it still needed to be investigated whether Lucy Shaw knew what Andre had done, and if she was directly or indirectly involved in the crime.
However, due to her pregnancy, Lucy Shaw would be allowed to leave after giving her statement.
Miles Harrison sat on a bench in the station, suddenly overcome with irritation.
They had looked into Andre Jennings’s profession before. He was supposedly a freelancer, but in reality, he was basically a gigolo.
He used his good looks to get kept by rich women.
Considering who Lucy Shaw was, he didn’t even have to guess what kind of relationship she’d had with Andre Jennings.
’I can’t believe I brought home a woman who hires gigolos!’
’When did they even stop seeing each other?’
’Don’t tell me they were still sleeping together the day before she and I got together!’
Miles Harrison didn’t know how long he sat there before Lucy Shaw finally came out, escorted by a female officer.
The moment she saw Miles Harrison, her eyes instantly reddened, and tears began to stream down her face.
Miles Harrison had been annoyed, but seeing her like this, he immediately felt a pang of pity.
’He always fell for this act of hers.’
It was why he had willingly fallen into her trap that day, even though he knew she’d spilled red wine on him on purpose.
"Are you okay?" Miles Harrison asked after a brief pause. "Why did the police bring you in?"
He wanted to hear how Lucy Shaw would explain herself.
Lucy Shaw opened her mouth, but before she could speak, the gentle tears she’d been shedding turned into an uncontrollable flood.
She struggled to catch her breath, wanting to speak but unable to get the words out.
The officers were watching from the side.
Miles Harrison finally said, "Let’s go to the car first."
Because Miles Harrison was injured and had to move carefully, he couldn’t drive himself. He’d had a driver bring him here.
Once they were both settled in the back seat, Miles Harrison had the driver get out of the car.
Then, without a word, he simply waited for Lucy Shaw to cry it out.
Lucy Shaw sat there sobbing for twenty minutes. When she couldn’t squeeze out any more tears, she had no choice but to grab a tissue, wipe her face, and say, "I do know Andre Jennings, but I swear I didn’t know he was going to do this!"
"Why would he tamper with my car? Did you two break up because of me?"
Miles Harrison may have been a spoiled playboy, but he wasn’t stupid.
He had assumed that Lucy Shaw and Andre Jennings had cut ties long ago.
The moment Lucy Shaw tried to use tears to get through this, he had already started to suspect something.
"No, we just met through a friend at a bar. We weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend," Lucy Shaw said, looking aggrieved. "I don’t even know anything about his family background. Why would I ever choose him as a boyfriend?"
"Is that the only reason the police brought you in? I doubt it."
Miles Harrison turned to the side, crossing his arms as he stared at Lucy Shaw.
He didn’t look angry, and his tone was even.
And yet, Lucy Shaw could sense that the man was deeply bothered by the matter.
It wasn’t surprising.
’I’m his fiancée now. How could he possibly rest easy if I’m connected to this case?’
"Because... because after I got together with you, Andre Jennings used our past relationship to threaten me. I transferred him some money a few times..." Lucy Shaw’s eyes reddened again as she spoke. "I was just so scared you’d be upset... That’s how he got a hold on me..." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
’Their past relationship...’
Miles Harrison didn’t bother asking for the humiliating details of their relationship. Instead, he cut straight to the chase.
"What about the baby?"
"What?"
"Is the baby you’re carrying mine, or his?"
Lucy Shaw froze for a second before immediately replying, "Of course it’s yours!"
Miles Harrison said nothing. His eyes remained fixed on Lucy Shaw, as if searching for any sign that she was lying.
"You don’t believe me? I got pregnant right after we first slept together! How can you possibly doubt me about this?"
Tears streamed down Lucy Shaw’s face as she spoke.
"That’s not how it’s calculated, is it? Didn’t the doctor say they calculate it based on your last menstrual period? That means anyone you slept with during that one-month window could have gotten you..."
SLAP!
Lucy Shaw slapped Miles Harrison across the face. "Miles Harrison! You’re horrible! How could you say that to me! You can blame me for not telling you about Andre Jennings, but you can’t insult me like this!"
The space inside the car was cramped.
She hadn’t put much force into the slap.
Miles Harrison’s face darkened, and he raised his hand and shoved Lucy Shaw hard.
He used a lot of force, and her body slammed heavily against the car door behind her.
But Miles Harrison felt no remorse. "Lucy Shaw, you know damn well why you got close to me in the first place. If it weren’t for my uncle, I never would have agreed to get engaged to you."
As Young Master Harrison, Miles had been spoiled his entire life. Not even his parents had ever laid a hand on him. ’Who the hell did Lucy Shaw think she was, hitting him!’
Still, on account of her being pregnant, he didn’t hit her back.
"Are you having regrets? Regretting not marrying Rory Linden? At the engagement party, you didn’t take your eyes off her for a second. But what good does that do? She’s your uncle’s girlfriend now!"
Lucy Shaw’s eyes were red with anger. She gripped the armrest beside her. "If marrying me is such a burden, then I’ll just go get an abortion, and we can call off the engagement."
As she turned to get out of the car, the man suddenly grabbed her arm.
At first, Lucy Shaw felt a flicker of secret delight.
She knew Miles Harrison wouldn’t be able to stand the thought of her aborting the baby.
But in the next second, the man behind her said, "Before you abort the baby, let’s do a paternity test first."
Lucy Shaw was dumbfounded.
Miles Harrison called the hospital right then and there. They told him a paternity test could be done as long as the fetus was over five weeks old.
He scheduled the paternity test on the spot for Monday morning.
-
The next day was Monday.
That morning, Rory Linden ran into Miles Harrison and Lucy Shaw in the lobby of the inpatient ward.
She could tell at a glance that Lucy Shaw’s eyes were swollen and puffy.
Miles Harrison had one arm around the woman’s waist, while his other hand gripped her wrist tightly.
The way they walked together looked almost comical.
Rory Linden pretended not to see them.
Today was payday, so she was in a great mood. Whatever was going on with those two had nothing to do with her.
Rory Linden had an important ritual every payday: she would go to an old house in the northern part of the city to visit Grandma Thorne.
She had met Grandma Thorne by chance back when she was a student.
The elderly woman had no children and suffered from severe cataracts. She had no money for treatment and had put it off for so long that now she was almost completely blind.
The first thing Rory Linden did after getting her paycheck each month was take out a hundred dollars or so to buy some daily necessities and bring them to the elderly woman.
Nearing the end of her shift, she called Sean Harrison to tell him she would be home a little late that evening.
When he learned why, he said, "I’ll go with you."
"You don’t have to," Rory Linden quickly refused. "I’m just going to chat with her for a little while and then come home. It’s all just small talk. You’d definitely be bored."
There was a half-second of silence on the other end of the line before Sean Harrison spoke. "Rory Linden, I flew to Cervia City early this morning, crammed my work into a few hours, and then flew back at four this afternoon just so I could spend a little more time with you. And you want me to just go home and wait?"
