Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 73: "It’s Not Certain If the Child Is Yours.
Lucy Shaw wore a look of utter shock.
Evelyn Irving stepped in front of Lucy Shaw. "Officer, there must be some mistake. Andre Jennings sabotaged my son’s car. Lucy is my daughter-in-law, how could she possibly harm my son!"
The police officer looked at Evelyn Irving and said, "We’ve come because we have sufficient evidence. Please do not obstruct our work."
Evelyn Irving looked at Lucy Shaw.
Lucy Shaw stood frozen, her face pale. She didn’t say a word, as if she had no intention of defending herself at all.
Or perhaps, there was simply no room for defense.
Evelyn Irving recalled what Rory Linden had said earlier and immediately understood.
She grabbed Lucy Shaw’s arm. "Why? Why would you harm my son! Haven’t I been good to you? Hasn’t my son been good to you? Ever since we found out you were pregnant, we’ve been preparing all sorts of nourishing meals for you. My son came to see you every single day you were in the hospital. Why would you hurt him!"
In Evelyn Irving’s eyes, Miles Harrison was her everything.
She would fight to the death with anyone who dared to touch her son.
Even if Lucy Shaw was carrying Miles Harrison’s child—her grandchild—she couldn’t be allowed to harm her son!
After all, there were plenty of other women in the world who could get pregnant.
She just couldn’t understand why Lucy Shaw would want to harm Miles Harrison.
Lucy Shaw stared blankly at Evelyn Irving, her mind racing with possibilities.
’Did Andre Jennings get caught?’
’What did Andre say? He wouldn’t have told them the baby is his, would he?’
’If not, then I should still have some room to maneuver.’
"I... I..." Lucy Shaw opened her mouth to explain to Evelyn Irving, "I don’t know anything. The police must have made a mistake."
The police had seen this kind of act many times before. One officer said bluntly, "Lucy Shaw, you’re pregnant, so we won’t cuff you. Please cooperate with us."
The doctors, nurses, and some patients’ families on the first floor had gathered around to watch the commotion.
Not wanting to be further humiliated by standing there, Lucy Shaw had no choice but to cooperate and get into the police car.
As the police car drove away, Evelyn Irving still found it difficult to accept this reality.
The irony was bitter. Just minutes ago, she had been inwardly telling Sean Harrison how very satisfied she was with Lucy Shaw as a daughter-in-law.
But in a matter of minutes, reality had dealt her a heavy slap in the face.
Sean Harrison said to Evelyn Irving, "Don’t worry. The police don’t arrest innocent people."
Then, he wrapped an arm around Rory Linden’s shoulder and walked toward the elevator.
His attitude toward the matter was clearly one of non-involvement.
Evelyn Irving finally snapped back to her senses and followed them, questioning Rory Linden. "Rory, you knew all along that Lucy Shaw knew Andre Jennings, didn’t you? Why didn’t you tell me? Did you know everything from the very beginning and hide it from me?"
"Sister-in-law," Sean Harrison spoke first. "Handle your own family’s affairs yourselves. Don’t drag Rory into it."
"She clearly knows everything!"
Evelyn Irving’s gaze was fixed on Rory Linden.
Recalling their previous conversation, she became more and more convinced that Rory Linden absolutely knew something!
"Auntie Irving, I only happened to see Miss Shaw and Andre Jennings talking together once. As for their relationship, I have no idea."
Rory Linden wasn’t lying.
Up to this point, she also hadn’t revealed that Lucy Shaw’s child wasn’t Miles Harrison’s.
She had no concrete evidence for this, and more importantly...
’Exposing this would do me no good.’
The elevator doors in front of them slowly opened.
Sean Harrison and Rory Linden stepped into the elevator first.
Evelyn Irving stood frozen in place, not following them immediately.
When the next elevator arrived, she finally went upstairs, with the nanny trailing behind her.
With Lucy Shaw taken away, her only option was to go to Miles Harrison’s hospital room.
The rooms at Elysian Hospital were all spacious. Miles Harrison was sitting at a dining table with a laptop propped up on it, checking stock information.
He saw the nanny carrying two insulated food containers and said casually, "Just put the food down and go check on Lucy. I’m not hungry yet."
Evelyn Irving had been bottling up a storm of anger and frustration. She couldn’t take it out on Sean Harrison, and now, seeing her son, she finally unleashed it!
"Lucy this, Lucy that! She’s the one who tried to kill you! She hired Andre Jennings to cause your car crash!" Evelyn Irving sat on the sofa, fuming. "We were so good to her! What more could she possibly want? How could she do something like this!"
Miles Harrison was confused. "Mom, what are you talking about?"
This was the same line of attack Evelyn Irving had previously used on Rory Linden.
How had it suddenly turned on Lucy Shaw in the blink of an eye?
"What am I talking about? I’m talking about Lucy Shaw!"
Evelyn Irving recounted what had just happened downstairs.
Miles Harrison’s first reaction was: "There must be some misunderstanding, right? Lucy is pregnant, she can’t go to jail. Contact the police and bail her out."
He started to get up, his brow furrowing deeply.
The car accident had caused a minor fracture in his ribs, and the slightest movement aggravated the injury.
"Oh, don’t you move with your injuries. I’ll call her parents."
Evelyn Irving’s heart ached for her son.
Ronan Harrison had gone abroad again after the engagement party, so he couldn’t be counted on.
"Didn’t you just run into Uncle? Since he knows about this, it would be faster to have him call his assistant to help."
Although Miles Harrison and Lucy Shaw were only engaged, he had considered her his wife ever since she became pregnant.
The person with the most influence in the Harrington Family was Sean Harrison.
"Him!" Evelyn Irving grew angry just thinking about what happened earlier. "Ever since Rory and Sean got close, Sean has been like a different person. They watched the whole thing as Lucy was taken away, and all Sean said was that it’s our family’s business to handle ourselves!"
Sean Harrison used to always step in to help with the Harrington Family’s affairs.
Sometimes, when a business deal for Miles Harrison’s company fell through, he would intervene.
He had helped Miles Harrison grow, time and time again.
"Mom, stop it," Miles Harrison said, getting annoyed. "Just go get Lucy back first."
No matter what, Lucy Shaw was still pregnant.
Pregnant with his child.
Even if they dropped the matter, his first child couldn’t be harmed.
Evelyn Irving refused immediately. "We are not going. She hired someone to cause a car crash that nearly killed you, and you want us to go get her?"
"This hasn’t been fully investigated yet, so don’t jump to conclusions," Miles Harrison finally lost his patience. "No matter what, the baby in Lucy’s belly is mine. There’s nothing more to say about that, right?"
"That’s hard to say."
Evelyn Irving had only said it casually.
An eerie silence suddenly fell over the hospital room.
From the moment Lucy Shaw became pregnant until now, everyone in the Harrington Family had been overjoyed about the baby’s arrival.
No one had ever considered the possibility that the child might not be Miles Harrison’s.
Evelyn Irving quickly backtracked. "I was just talking. No matter what, Lucy would never do something like that."
But Miles Harrison’s expression had already darkened.
According to the timeline the doctor had given, she had gotten pregnant the very first night he and Lucy Shaw had slept together.
But that sort of thing wasn’t unheard of.
He had a friend who’d had a one-night stand, and a year later, the woman showed up with a child to force a marriage. A DNA test proved the child was, in fact, his.
"Alright, I’m going to go get Lucy back first."
Miles Harrison supported himself on the table as he slowly stood up and headed straight for the door.
