Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 62: "The Value of My Things Is for Me to Decide.
Gary Sinclair’s face twisted in pain. He struggled for a while but couldn’t get up.
When he finally managed to open his eyes, he instantly recognized the man who had hit him as Sean Harrison and immediately started wailing, "OW, OW!"
Rory Linden tilted her head, surprised to see it was Sean Harrison. ’He’s still sick,’ she thought, ’and it’s overcast today. He shouldn’t be out at all!’
"Assault! Assault! Come and see! Someone’s hitting me! Someone’s bullying an old man!" Gary Sinclair shrieked. "My daughter won’t support me! Now that she has a rich boyfriend, she doesn’t want her old man anymore! She thinks her own father is an embarrassment!"
The speech sounded familiar to Rory Linden. It was the same routine he had used on her landlord.
Before Gary Sinclair had even finished, a crowd of people materialized out of nowhere on the otherwise quiet street, surrounding them with their phones raised.
Catching the approaching crowd out of the corner of his eye, Gary Sinclair theatrically wiped away a fake tear. "I worked so hard to raise my daughter, put her through college... and now that she has a rich boyfriend, she doesn’t want to acknowledge her own father anymore. I might as well be dead..."
The people in the crowd, completely ignoring the context, immediately started chiming in.
"What an ungrateful brat."
"Who despises their own parents? She wouldn’t even be here without them!"
"Get it on video! People like her need to be exposed online."
"All that education gone to waste. Isn’t the first thing you learn to respect your parents?!"
One after another, they added their two cents.
"You people..."
Just as Rory Linden was about to argue back, Sean Harrison pulled her into his arms and shook his head slightly, signaling for her to stay quiet.
In truth, the moment these people had suddenly appeared, Rory Linden already knew what was happening.
She had assumed he meant for them to just leave...
With his free hand, Sean Harrison took out his phone and dialed a number. "Come to the spot two hundred meters west of my apartment building. Bring a few extra men."
He hung up, his gaze sweeping over the people holding up their phones. Then, he looked back at Gary Sinclair. "My men are on their way. They’ll round up these people and investigate them one by one. That’s how we’ll find your creditors, right?"
Gary Sinclair froze.
The bystanders who had been holding up their phones and making snide comments instantly fell silent.
Sean Harrison glanced around at the crowd again, then spoke slowly. "Since you’re all here, you must know who I am. But what you probably don’t know is that not only does my company have a legal department, but I also have a large personal legal team. Suing every single one of you three times over would be nothing more than a small expense for me. For you, however, it would mean spending your own money and energy, only to end up either in jail or paying a hefty fine."
As he spoke, people in the crowd began to lower their phones.
Two of them simply turned and walked away.
Gary Sinclair clearly hadn’t expected this turn of events.
Unwilling to give up, he could only resort to shouting again. "I don’t know what you’re talking about! Rory Sinclair, you’re my daughter! My blood runs in your veins, and that will never change! You have to support me! You have to give me money! If you don’t, I’ll go raise hell at your hospital!" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
"Go on, then. Raise hell."
Rory Linden knew, of course, that Gary Sinclair was capable of it.
’That’s just how society is,’ she thought. ’Those with nothing to lose have no fear.’
Gary Sinclair had nothing, so he didn’t care about the consequences.
But what about Rory Linden? She had a job, and as it happened, Gary Sinclair knew exactly where she worked.
Rory Linden looked down at Gary Sinclair playing the scoundrel on the ground, feeling a wave of helplessness and exhaustion. "Go ahead, cause a scene. Get me fired. Then I can finally leave this place with a clear conscience. I’ll find somewhere to hide, or maybe I’ll just go abroad—run away to a place you’ll never find in your entire life. You’ll never see me again."
As the words left her mouth, she suddenly realized it might be the best solution.
’How can I even think about helping others when I can’t even manage my own life?’
Gary Sinclair was stunned into silence.
He knew she was right.
He’d only managed to find her this time by a complete fluke.
If Rory Linden left, he definitely didn’t have the means to find her again.
Who would pay off his gambling debts then?
None of his previous wives or their children had the ability to do so.
By now, the crowd that had been filming had completely dispersed.
Finding himself isolated and without support, Gary Sinclair could only clutch his stomach. "My stomach... it hurts so much! I think my insides are ruptured! COUGH, COUGH, COUGH, COUGH..."
"I’ll call 911 for you!"
Rory Linden took out her phone.
Sean Harrison had been the one to kick him, but he had done it to defend her. In any case, this was something she could handle for now.
Just a few minutes after she hung up, a man in a suit ran over. In the distance, seven or eight other men stood waiting.
Sean Harrison waited for Rory to put her phone away, then casually wrapped an arm around her. "Alright, let my assistant handle this. Let’s go."
"You can’t leave!"
Gary Sinclair forced out a few more fake coughs.
Before Rory could react, Sean’s assistant crouched down and said in a placating tone, "Sir, please don’t worry. Once we get to the hospital, we’ll make sure you get a full check-up. You won’t have to pay for a thing."
"But she can’t leave either..."
Gary Sinclair struggled to get up.
The assistant shoved Gary Sinclair back to the ground, still smiling. "Oh, be careful now. You’re badly injured, you shouldn’t be moving around."
Just then, the ambulance arrived. The assistant immediately helped Gary Sinclair aboard.
Once the ambulance drove off, Sean Harrison visibly staggered.
"Are you okay?"
Rory Linden quickly steadied him.
As she grabbed his arm, she could feel how hot he was.
Fevers always get worse at night.
"I’m fine. Never better," Sean Harrison said, the corners of his lips curving up. "Going grocery shopping? Let’s go together."
"Let’s not. I’ll just order something on my phone," Rory Linden said, looking at how flushed his face was from the fever. "You shouldn’t have come out when your fever is this high..."
Sean Harrison’s dark eyes were downcast. "I was worried you might change your mind and leave, so I came out to check."
"...I’m not the kind of person who goes back on their word."
Rory Linden felt a sense of resignation.
’She couldn’t even begin to understand why Sean would think that of her.’
Back at his apartment, Rory Linden ordered some fresh vegetables on an app and then made a simple, light lunch.
After lunch, Rory Linden prepared to set up another IV drip for him.
Sean Harrison watched as Rory skillfully took out her silk scarf to tie it as a tourniquet. His brow furrowed. "You used this yesterday, too?"
"Mm-hmm... It’s just that all your things are too expensive. This scarf of mine is pretty cheap."
Rory Linden explained as she tied the knot.
Sean Harrison turned and left the room. When he returned, he was holding a black silk tie, which he handed to Rory. "Use this."
"But your tie is real silk. Mine is just polyester, it’s not worth anything."
Rory Linden made no move to take the tie.
Sean Harrison walked over, untied her scarf, and replaced it with his own tie, knotting it around his arm. "Didn’t you say you didn’t want this scarf anymore?" he said. "So it’s mine now. And I’m the one who decides the value of my own things."
