Chapter 23: Chapter 23: "Miles Harrison, Is Your Lap a Public Bus? Anyone Can Take a Seat

Sherry Walsh and Rory Linden had been classmates since they were children, so naturally, she knew Miles Harrison too.

Miles Harrison took a moment to place the voice, then immediately recognized it as Sherry Walsh’s!

He strode over, his eyes first landing on Rory Linden, who was sitting on the sofa.

Lucy Shaw followed him.

She knew Sherry Walsh.

And she knew her father was a famous lawyer.

Sherry Walsh stood up from the sofa, her face cold. "Some men are just shameless. Back in the day, Rory was the campus belle, and guys were lining up for her. You used the ’just friends’ excuse to keep her from dating anyone else. Then, when you two finally did get together, you were cheating on her every other day. It’s so weird how men can’t seem to control their third leg."

Miles Harrison’s face darkened. "I never cheated when Rory and I were together."

Rory Linden hadn’t wanted to rehash the past with Miles Harrison.

But hearing him say that, she couldn’t help but retort, "Is that so? We hadn’t broken up that night at the bar, had we? How did this Miss Shaw end up sitting on your lap?"

"Lucy had sprained her ankle, so I just let her sit for a moment."

Even as Miles Harrison offered the explanation, he knew how absurd it sounded.

Sherry Walsh couldn’t help but roll her eyes dramatically. "Oh, I get it. So, your lap is a public bus, Miles Harrison? Anyone can just take a seat."

The moment she said that, it wasn’t just Miles Harrison; even the shop assistants in the VIP room behind them had looks of pure admiration on their faces.

It was an impressive and vicious takedown, all without a single swear word.

"Sherry Walsh! Don’t think you can say whatever you want just because your father is a lawyer! I can hire an even better lawyer to sue you for slander!"

Lucy Shaw burst out in anger.

Sherry Walsh sneered. "Go on, then. Sue me. Given your family’s situation, can you even afford to?"

Lucy Shaw’s expression flickered.

Sherry continued, "Let me ask you something, Lucy. When you sat on that ’public bus,’ did you know it already had an owner?"

Lucy Shaw’s face grew even uglier.

Of course, she was no match for Sherry Walsh in an argument.

Sherry was the daughter of a renowned lawyer and a law student at Veridia University. During her time there, she had been the school’s star debater.

To say nothing of her other talents, she had a quick mind and a silver tongue.

Lucy Shaw could only play her trump card. Her eyes gradually reddened, tears welling up as she turned to Miles Harrison with an innocent expression.

Miles Harrison could never stand to see a woman looking so pitiful and helpless.

He wrapped an arm around Lucy Shaw’s waist. "This is all my fault. We’re getting engaged on Saturday, and Rory Linden and I have already broken up. Let’s just drop what happened in the past."

Rory Linden couldn’t bear to let Sherry Walsh keep fighting her battles for her.

She stood up and said earnestly, "Miss Shaw, I should actually be thanking you."

Lucy Shaw looked confused.

Rory Linden said with great sincerity, "If it weren’t for you, I might never have been able to completely rid myself of this cheating scumbag."

"HAHAHAHA!" Sherry Walsh clapped her hands. "Exactly! We’re so grateful to Miss Shaw for her great service. Now that you’ve taken this scumbag off our hands, whatever you do, don’t break up. We can’t have trash like a homewrecker and a cheater getting back on the market."

"Rory Linden!" Miles Harrison finally exploded. "All these years you’ve lived in the Harrington Family’s house, I’ve indulged you. Did you start to think you were someone important? Let me tell you, you’re just the daughter of a maid, the lowest of the low! Without the Harrington Family, you’re nothing!"

Every word the man spoke dripped with the superiority of a young master.

It was utter contempt for her!

But Rory Linden wasn’t surprised in the slightest.

’This is what Miles Harrison had truly thought all along. That she was just a maid’s daughter, and by being with him, she was punching way above her weight. It was precisely because of this that he’d spent all those years ordering her around as if it were his right. He could graciously condescend, but she could never actually rise to his level.’

"Miles Harrison, you’re a real fucking..."

"Sherry!"

Rory Linden quickly grabbed Sherry Walsh’s arm.

’When she starts cursing, it means she’s truly angry.’

"I’ve already moved out of the Harrington house. We won’t be seeing each other anymore, so let’s just leave it at that."

Rory Linden really couldn’t be bothered to waste any more words on Miles Harrison.

Otherwise, she was afraid Sherry would say something reckless in her anger.

Miles Harrison himself might not be capable of much, but the Harrington Family had Sean Harrison.

Blood is thicker than water.

If Sean Harrison decided to stand up for Miles, it would only bring trouble for Sherry Walsh.

She wasn’t afraid of trouble herself, but she couldn’t drag her best friend into it.

After the farcical scene ended, Sherry Walsh still picked out two outfits and two pairs of shoes from the store.

Once they left the shop, Sherry handed a pair of shoes to Rory Linden. "These are for you."

"Huh? I can’t accept them."

Rory Linden quickly refused.

She knew the prices at this luxury boutique.

This pair of shoes had to cost several thousand, at least.

"It’s a breakup present. I’ll be mad if you don’t take it." Sherry Walsh forcibly pushed the shoes into Rory Linden’s hands. "These will look amazing on you. I hope that wearing these beautiful shoes will help you walk a smoother path in life from now on!"

Rory Linden and Sherry Walsh wore the same shoe size.

Back in the day, Sherry had given her many of her clothes.

Some had only been worn once, while others had been bought a year or two ago, disliked, and left with the tags still on.

Only then did Rory Linden accept the shoes, smiling. "Well... I’ll treat you to a big meal once I get paid."

Sherry Walsh made an "OK" sign with her hand. "No problem. I’ll definitely eat my fill and make you break the bank."

The two of them then had dinner together.

Sherry had her driver take Rory home.

When they arrived downstairs from her apartment, Rory Linden remembered she had run out of chocolate, so she asked the driver to stop at a supermarket near her residential complex.

For a doctor, something like chocolate for a quick energy boost was essential and needed to be kept on hand at all times.

Rory Linden left the supermarket and was walking down the street...

Someone tapped her on the shoulder.

Rory Linden turned around and saw an old man standing beside her.

The man was gaunt and emaciated, and his clothes were filthy.

Rory Linden stared at the old man for no more than two seconds before terrifying memories flooded her mind!

The old man was her father, Gary Sinclair!

Terrified, she spun around, ready to run!

Gary Sinclair grabbed her by the arm. "Starry, what are you running for? It’s me, your dad!"

"Let go! I’m calling the police if you don’t let go!"

Rory Linden struggled desperately. She wanted so badly to run.

But the memories of being beaten and abused as a child came rushing back like a flood.

Her legs wouldn’t move, and she couldn’t break free from his grip.

"Go on, call the police! Even if they come, I’m still your father. You can’t change that!"

"What kind of father runs off and abandons his child?! That’s child abandonment! It’s against the law!"

Rory Linden could only try to intimidate Gary Sinclair with the legal knowledge Sherry had once taught her.

"I don’t understand any of that. All I know is that you’re my daughter, and I’m your dad!" Gary Sinclair said with a smug look. "I’ve already asked around about you. You’re living a pretty good life, huh? Living with the Harrington Family, dating that Young Master Harrison who’s the same age as you."

"I’m not! I’ve already moved out of the Harrington house!"

Rory Linden was still struggling desperately as she spoke.

"I know. It’s because you’re marrying that Young Master Harrison, right?" Gary Sinclair’s face twisted into a malicious grin. "How much is he giving you for a bride price? The Harrington Family is so rich, I won’t give my blessing for anything less than thirty million!"
