Love at First Sight? Mr. Harrison Has Been Scheming All Along-Chapter 24: Sean Harrison Asks Directly: Who Hit Your Face? Miles Harrison?
It was already past nine o’clock at night.
The area around Elysian Hospital consisted of either upscale residential districts with few inhabitants or old neighborhoods that were half-abandoned, so there weren’t many people around.
The occasional passerby didn’t even seem to consider stopping to help.
Rory Linden had a natural fear of Gary Sinclair.
She struggled until she was exhausted, finally just standing there, speechless.
"I’m so sorry to disappoint you. I did date Young Master Harrison for a few years, but he made it clear. I’m the daughter of a gambler, an alcoholic, and a nanny. There was no way he would marry me. He’s going to marry another young lady who’s his social equal."
Rory Linden’s voice was listless.
Even though she had moved on, bringing it up again felt like tearing open an old wound.
"Impossible! Don’t you fucking lie to me!" Gary Sinclair cursed. "I’ve already looked into it. He’s marrying you! You’re about to get engaged! I’m telling you, if he doesn’t give me money, I’m going to his family’s home and raising hell!"
"Go ahead." Rory Linden gave up. "Go to the Harrington Family and ask them. Ask them who Young Master Harrison’s wife is, and if it’s me, Rory Linden."
"What’s your name?" Gary Sinclair froze. "What the fuck did you just say your name was?!"
Rory Linden had forgotten one thing.
She used to be called Rory Sinclair.
She had taken her father’s surname.
Later, after her mother, Maisie Linden, passed away and Gary Sinclair took their money and ran, she had asked to take her mother’s surname.
Normally, changing a child’s name requires the consent of both parents.
At the time, the Harrington Family had pulled some strings and managed to change her name even in Gary Sinclair’s absence.
From then on, she was no longer Rory Sinclair.
She was Rory Linden.
Rory Linden didn’t flinch, repeating, "Rory Linden."
THWACK!
Gary Sinclair raised his hand and viciously punched Rory Linden across the face!
The blow sent Rory Linden sprawling to the ground. A fiery pain spread across her face, and she could taste blood in her mouth.
"Say it again, what the fuck is your name?" Gary Sinclair’s face was contorted with rage. "You’re my fucking seed, you should have my fucking name! Who the hell let you change it!"
"What are you doing!" a man passing by on the street suddenly shouted. "What’s going on!"
"Son of a bitch, I’m teaching my daughter a lesson! It’s none of your damn business!" Gary Sinclair yelled, pointing at the man.
Rory Linden seized the opportunity, grabbed her bag from the ground, and ran.
As a surgeon, staying in shape was essential to endure surgeries that could last over ten hours.
She was a fast runner. By the time Gary Sinclair realized what was happening, she was already far away.
Rory Linden didn’t know how long she ran. At first, she could still hear Gary Sinclair’s curses behind her.
Then, gradually, they faded.
But she didn’t dare to stop. She stumbled on, losing track of how long she’d been running.
Finally, completely out of energy, she found a hidden corner untouched by the light and squatted down.
But she was still trembling with fear.
The terror and panic inside her completely overshadowed the physical exhaustion and the throbbing pain in her face.
All her emotions had been stretched taut like a string, and even now, in the silence, she couldn’t bring herself to relax.
She squatted silently in the corner, too terrified to even cry.
’Why.’
’Why is this man still alive.’
’Why did he have to come back and ruin my life?’
Rory Linden had previously asked Sherry Walsh if she was legally obligated to support a parent who had abandoned her.
Sherry Walsh’s answer had been that even if he had abandoned her...
...she still had to support him.
Rory Linden was truly in despair.
She was still in debt, so quitting her job was impossible. But if she didn’t quit and run, how could she ever get rid of Gary Sinclair?
As a gambler and an alcoholic, Gary Sinclair would surely cling to her relentlessly once he was out of money.
Even if he eventually found out she wasn’t marrying Miles Harrison, he would probably use his position as her father to marry her off to someone else...
...and then run off with the dowry money.
Rory Linden had thought her life would finally return to peace.
She never imagined that on the very first day, it would be thrown into chaos all over again.
Rory Linden didn’t know how long she stayed there. Only when the sky began to lighten with the pale white of dawn did she stumble her way home.
She lay down for two hours, then got up, planning to quickly wash up and go to work.
But when she stood in front of the mirror, she saw that her right cheek, where she’d been hit yesterday, was completely swollen. There was no way makeup could cover it!
She tried to think of a solution, but in the end, all she could do was hide it with a surgical mask.
At the hospital, whenever a colleague asked about her face...
...she would just reply, "I fell."
The only thing she was worried about today was Sean Harrison.
Sean Harrison’s last visit was the day before yesterday, on Saturday. He had rested on Sunday, and according to their agreement, he was scheduled to come in today to have his wound treated and the dressing changed.
’That man is surely much better at spotting lies, and I’m a terrible liar.’
’But...’
’He probably won’t care about my face being injured.’
Rory Linden could only pray that was the case.
She was facing too much right now; all she could do was take it one step at a time.
-
At half-past five in the evening, Rory Linden had just come out of a surgery.
As she passed the nurses’ station, a young nurse teased her, "Dr. Linden, your boyfriend is waiting for you in your office!"
"Do I need to say it again?"
"He’s not my boyfriend!"
Hearing the nurse’s response, Rory Linden said anyway, "You should know that President Harrison is a VIC of our hospital. I’m just an ordinary doctor. If your excessive joking gets me fired, that’s a small matter. But if the hospital loses such a distinguished VIC, none of us can afford that."
The nurse was taken aback for a moment, then quickly wiped the smile from her face. "Sorry, sorry. I won’t say it again."
When they first found out Sean Harrison was waiting for Rory Linden, they were just joking around casually.
When they noticed Sean Harrison didn’t seem to mind the joke, someone got bold and asked if he wanted to be Dr. Linden’s boyfriend.
The man had just smiled, neither confirming nor denying it.
So everyone had just continued to joke about it.
Another nurse beside her said, "Actually, it seems like President Harrison doesn’t mind."
Rory Linden said, "That’s because President Harrison is well-mannered, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t mind inwardly."
’Even Miles Harrison looked down on me for being a nanny’s child.’
’As the Family Head of the Harrington Family, a tycoon in Veridia and all of Celestria, how could Sean Harrison not mind a joke like that?’
’It just proves the man has better composure, that’s all.’
Rory Linden tugged at the mask on her face and hurried into her office. She saw Sean Harrison sitting in an empty chair. As she began to gather her things, she said, "Mr. Harrison, sorry to keep you waiting. I’ll take you to get your wound treated."
Sean Harrison acknowledged her.
At first, he hadn’t thought much of it when he saw Rory Linden wearing a mask.
It was a hospital, after all; wearing a mask wasn’t strange.
But when they entered the elevator together, Rory Linden still hadn’t taken it off.
Only then did Sean Harrison take a closer look at her face.
As soon as they walked into the treatment room...
...Sean Harrison asked directly, "What happened to your face? Who hit you? Miles Harrison?"
He used to call Miles Harrison "Miles."
But this time, he used his full name.
