Journey to the West: Starting by taking Sun Wukong as my disciple!-Chapter 389 Playing Dumb, Tian Peng is Anxious
"Stop playing dumb, you monkey. Tell me, is all of this your doing?" The Buddhist disciple was already convinced, by the look on Sun Wukong’s face, that everything since the Buddhist feast was within his expectations.
The Immortal Officials felt quite puzzled by the disciple’s furious outburst, looking back and forth between Sun Wukong and the Buddhist disciple, failing to grasp the meaning.
"Chef Wukong, what does this mean? Why are they accusing you of scheming? What scheme?"
Sun Wukong opened his palms, "I really don’t know, I just guessed their identities and they accused me of scheming. I still don’t understand what has happened."
"You’re lying, monkey! This was all premeditated by you since that dish. You did it on purpose, you wanted to deceive us into eating it!"
If Sun Wukong hadn’t been surrounded by a host of Immortal Officials, the Buddhist disciple probably would have already charged over and torn him to pieces.
"I still don’t quite get what you mean. You weren’t forced to eat that dish by me - how come I’m accused of deceiving you?"
Sun Wukong replied with a look of grievance, "When I served the dish, you wouldn’t eat it and even scolded me. Now you sneakily eat it and, upon being caught, shift the blame to me. I’m just a cook, why would you target me?"
"It’s obviously you! Stop pretending!" The disciple couldn’t suppress his anger and tried to rush at Sun Wukong, but was restrained by an Immortal Official, "Let go of me! It’s clear, it’s that Sun Monkey using underhanded tricks!"
"Now, revered monk, you can’t be saying that. After the Buddhist feast was over, Chef Wukong came straight to us – how could he have tricked you with underhanded tactics?" asked an Immortal Official.
"He cooked that dish, does he need any other ways to play tricks if he wanted to?" The disciple was enraged, but being detained, he could not use his mana and could only struggle futilely.
"That’s not right though," the Immortal Official pondered, and then said, "Chef Wukong cast what incantations on you? Targeting you from within a dish would only confirm his guilt, wouldn’t it?"
"Yeah, that’s right," Sun Wukong answered aggrievedly, "I told you I didn’t do it. Besides, who are you? If you change clothes, I wouldn’t even recognize you, so why would I target you?"
There was merit in those words, as so far Sun Wukong had no contact with Buddhism, and accusing a Buddhist disciple of breaking his precepts over this was no small matter.
Only someone with a deep hatred would dare to take such a risk.
"No, it was clearly him!" The disciple had already made up his mind about the situation and wasn’t open to considering other possibilities.
Moreover, now that so many Immortal Officials had caught them red-handed eating meat, if they couldn’t find someone to blame, they would be the ones to suffer the consequences.
"You say I’ve tampered with the dish, then what do you think I’ve done?"
Sun Wukong’s heart lightened, and turning around, he addressed the audience of Immortal Officials, "You all saw for yourselves, you didn’t even touch the dish, let alone use a spoon. I even set a restriction, cutting it off from you. What kind of tampering do you think I could’ve done?"
"That—I mean, you did tamper with it; otherwise, we wouldn’t all be here for this dish!" The disciple didn’t know how to respond to Sun Wukong’s question, but he was adamant in one thing—that Sun Wukong had tampered with the dish.
"Alright," Sun Wukong sighed deeply.
The disciples watched Sun Wukong tensely, not naive enough to think he would reveal the whole truth.
Knowing Sun Wukong’s cunning and trickery, they feared what he might do next.
"Since you have already made up your minds about the matter, you certainly won’t back down," Sun Wukong said. "But I really didn’t do anything, and I’m not good with words, I can’t outtalk you. However, I can’t let you wrong me without cause."
The Immortal Officials were momentarily stunned upon hearing Sun Wukong speak like this. He said he wasn’t eloquent, yet half of those present had been falsely accused by Sun Wukong in the past. If he were inarticulate, then the rest wouldn’t be able to speak at all.
"Say that again! You dare to act but not own up to it! What do you take yourself for!"
Sun Wukong spread his hands, "I am a monkey, after all. What kind of heavens-defying, malicious deeds could I possibly commit? As for you, you clearly ate the dishes you shouldn’t have, and now you’re trying to pin the blame on me. It truly saddens my heart. If everyone were to be as unjust as you, mixing right and wrong, then I might as well stop cooking altogether."
No sooner had the Immortal Officials been shocked by Sun Wukong’s words than they began to speak up for him in haste. Being falsely accused was one thing, but stopping cooking was utterly unacceptable! How could they let that happen?
"Chef Wukong, don’t say such things. We all understand that this isn’t your fault; how could we blame you? Clearly, it’s their mistake," they said.
"Yes, Chef Wukong, you didn’t do anything. They ate the meat dishes themselves. We all saw it with our own eyes," agreed another.
"Exactly!" exclaimed yet another. "As soon as we opened the door, we saw them sneaking bits of the dish. They’re lying, and now they’re trying to put the blame on Chef Wukong. What kind of reasoning is that? Nobody forced them to eat it, so how can they blame Chef Wukong?"
Sun Wukong picked up the thread of the argument, "Exactly. Even if I had tampered with the dish, I didn’t force you to jump over walls, dress as Immortal Attendants, and say you were looking for Buddha Beads—and then steal a bite of the dish. What am I supposed to be, that I could force you to do all that?"
Indeed they couldn’t, and the people from Buddhism didn’t know how to respond.
After all, each of them had only smelled the aroma of the dish and been drawn to the Imperial Kitchen by that scent. Everything else was of their own volition; no one had forced them.
But although that was what they were thinking, they would not admit it. A Buddhist disciple glared at Sun Wukong, "You’ve admitted it, after all! You tampered with the dish. If I hadn’t kept smelling it after going back and felt curious to investigate, why would I have come here and eaten your cooking?"
Sun Wukong smiled slyly at the disciple while the other Immortal Officials looked at him in shock.
"What’s with the way you’re all staring at me?" he asked.
"I haven’t said anything yet, and here you are admitting that you couldn’t resist the temptation and ate the dish," Wukong retorted.
At Chaos Residence, Chen Nuo was thinking about making toppings for milk tea. Usually, milk tea contains additions like pearls or taro balls,
but with the multitude of modern milk tea flavors, just pearls and taro balls seemed too monotonous.
However, Chen Nuo thought about these Immortals who would buy out his Peach Blossom Brew, and considered that when it came to milk tea, not to mention toppings, even just milk tea with sugar would sell out.
Given the ingredients he had on hand, making brown sugar pearls or milk caps would be the most convenient. As there were no customers around of late, Chen Nuo started to prepare the brown sugar pearls for the milk tea.
No sooner had he prepared the ingredients than Tian Peng burst in from outside. Chen Nuo was slightly annoyed by Tian Peng’s brashness and frowned as he looked towards the door, "What’s the matter? What’s with the fuss?"
"Shopkeeper Chen, there’s serious trouble!"
"What serious trouble?" Chen Nuo still felt irritated by Tian Peng’s abrupt entrance.
Over the years he had been here, he had never encountered any serious issues. Even if the sky were to fall, it probably wouldn’t have anything to do with his Chaos Residence.
