Immortal In A Death Game-Chapter 168: An Important Person
"...Huh? Building... demolition?"
And now sat alone in the interrogation room, his only companion was the flickering lights humming above him. Agent Suarez was outside, rushing earlier to make some calls, forgetting to completely close the door, allowing Adam to hear some of his words.
"Records... what?"
"...doesn’t make sense. When?"
"...legal? Why?"
"...acquired at the date of demolition?"
Adam leaned forward slightly, straining to catch more of the conversation. But all he could really hear were Suarez’s fragmented words. But... he did get the entire gist of what was happening.
Clementine and Sylvie.
The only ones who could do something like this would be them. The Hospital could have done it, too, but it wouldn’t make sense for them to go on about it like this. And so, the only ones who could do this power move were they.
But... when exactly did they do this? And why...? They’ve already helped him in more ways than he could think of.
Soon, Suarez’s voice grew quieter, and Adam heard footsteps approaching. He straightened in his chair as the agent returned, looking more confused and frustrated than before. The agent’s jaw was tight, and he carried a different folder under his arm.
"Mr. Smith." Suarez sat down heavily, placing the folder on the table without opening it. "There’s been a... development."
Adam didn’t say anything, only slightly nodding at him to finish explaining.
"The building you destroyed, it would seem... was really owned by you." Suarez rubbed his temples. "Did you know this?"
Once again, Adam didn’t answer—if he said yes, he would be lying to a federal agent. If he said no, well... he’d be in more trouble. Suarez waited for him to answer, but when he remained quiet even after a minute, Suarez just shook his head.
"It was apparently scheduled for demolition. The entire block was condemned." He paused, studying Adam’s face. "But here’s what’s interesting—the entire block was purchased on the same day by Endless Holdings LLC. The paperwork lists you as the sole beneficiary. Did you know about this?"
Once again, Adam just stayed quiet. He couldn’t, however, prevent himself from shrugging upon hearing that. Apparently... he’s the owner of a company now.
"You..." Suarez stared at him for a long moment, then closed the folder with a sharp snap. "...You’re free to go."
"...I am?" Adam blinked several times, but quickly stood up and nodded. "Ah, yes. I’m... uh... happy to assist in clearing up all of this... misunderstanding. Yes."
Suarez squinted, clearly not buying Adam’s act at all. Adam pointed at the door, then slowly made his way toward it. But before he could take three steps, he turned around and went back.
"Can... I take my sword back?" he said, his hand already reaching for the Shion.
"...Fine." Suarez groaned audibly. "Yes. Just take your sword ba—Can someone escort Mr. Adam back to the lobby already?!"
"Y-yes!"
An officer rushed inside and quickly escorted Adam through the building’s corridors, past holding cells that he... narrowly avoided. And as soon as they reached the lobby—
"Adam! There you are!" Harvey’s voice almost caused the entire station to shake. He rushed over, his bald head gleaming under the lobby lights. "What the hell happened in there? Did they torture you? Did you tell them about our secrets? Are you secretly a government spy?"
"Uh..." Adam didn’t really know what to answer to any of Harvey’s questions or... if he should actually answer them. And so, he just looked around him. "Where are the others?"
"Responding to a high-risk Leak. Some kind of plant monster eating through a shopping mall or something." Harvey gestured toward the exit where Beatrice and Leona were making their way toward them. "We got released an hour ago, but they kept you longer."
"Oh... we should go help them."
"You just got interrogated by useless police for hours, and you want to work already?!" Harvey groaned.
"It’s not really work," Adam said quietly. "We’re... saving lives."
"He’s right," Beatrice said as she approached.
"Hmn." Leona nodded behind her. "I also want to stretch my legs for a moment. Killing monsters would help relieve my stress."
"Ugh... I can’t believe this..." Harvey watched as the three were already making their way out of the station. "You’re all corporate slaves, you know that?"
Harvey followed behind them, but before they could actually leave, Gordon approached from across the lobby.
"Ah!" Harvey immediately pointed at him. "Traitor! You sold us out to the feds!"
Gordon waved off their glares. "I need to speak with Adam. There’s... someone who would like to meet him."
"Ah, traitor! How dare you request something of us?!" Harvey waved his finger at Gordon’s face. "You were supposed to be our Boss! Betrayer! I want a massive raise! Double, no... Triple!"
Gordon sighed, lowering Harvey’s finger.
"I’m sorry, Sir..." Adam got in between the two, trying to defuse the... silly situation. "But we need to respond to a Leak."
"No." Gordon shook his head. "The others can handle it, Mira’s with them. The four of you are on stand by for now. This is important."
"Hmm..." Adam hesitated, glancing at his teammates. But after a while, he nodded. Gordon is his boss, after all.
***
Gordon led him to a small cafe three blocks from the HDIU building. The place was packed with people, and judging from what everyone was wearing, all of them were employees of the IBAA.
Everyone seemed casual, however, and was just taking breaks, judging from their conversations. Adam noticed this crowd immediately—was... Gordon trying to make him feel at ease?
They found a corner table, and Gordon ordered two coffees while they waited. Ten minutes later, a man in an obviously expensive gray suit approached their table. He was tall and lean, with white hair and sharp blue eyes that seemed to take in everything at once.
He seemed older than Gordon, but he definitely didn’t look older. It was... odd.
"Adam," Gordon stood. "I’d like you to meet Chase Damon, Country Manager for the IBAA US."
