Chapter 78: Chapter 78

Ezekiel nodded, understanding the gravity of what she was asking. "Alright, I’ll draw it in," he said, steeling himself for the task ahead. "But you two better be ready."

Edge, though exhausted, managed a grim smile. "Guess this is where we see what we’re really made of."

They took their positions, each of them readying for what could be their final stand in killing the monster. Ezekiel stepped forward, raising his spear in a deliberately shaky hand, making it seem like he was on the verge of collapse. He taunted Subterranea, shouting insults and daring it to strike him.

The serpent’s eyes narrowed, focusing intently on Ezekiel. It sensed his weakness and, driven by instinct, prepared to strike. Its body coiled tightly, the air around it crackling with electricity as it built up energy for a devastating attack.

And that’s where Edge moved in closer, deliberately placing himself in the Subterranea’s line of sight, further baiting it to lunge. Surprisingly, the serpent took the bait, its massive head shooting forward, fangs bared and venom dripping, aiming to take them both down in a single, lethal strike.

"Now, Edge!" Remillia shouted, her heart pounding in her chest.

At the last possible moment, Edge leaped to the side, narrowly avoiding the serpent’s fangs. In that split second, the Subterranea’s head was exposed, its vulnerable spot under the jaw in clear view.

Remillia, with every ounce of strength she had left, dashed forward. Her blade gleamed in the dim light, aimed directly at the serpent’s weak spot. With a fierce cry, she leaped into the air and drove her sword into the soft flesh beneath Subterranea’s jaw.

The serpent let out a deafening roar, its body thrashing wildly as the blade pierced its vulnerable spot. Sparks of electricity surged through the air, but Remillia held firm, driving the weapon deeper, determined to end the fight once and for all.

Remillia’s heart sank as she saw the Subterranea’s body twitch, the serpent still clinging to its life despite the devastating blow she had delivered. Its yellow eyes, now dimmed but not extinguished, glared at her with a lingering, vengeful fury. The monster was weakened, but it wasn’t dead yet.

"Uh-uhm Remillia?"

"What?"

"There’s a bit of problem."

"What is it?"

"Just turn around."

When I turned around, I found Ezekiel and Edge, their strength completely spent, collapsed to the ground, their bodies battered and bruised.

’Oh sh!t, they’ve already exhausted their mana.’

"We can’t help you anymore."

"It hurts my ego to say this but I know you can do this."

They gave me a thumbs up before finally collapsing. I want to run to them but my body refused to move. They had given everything they had, and now it was up to Remillia—she was the only one left standing.

’Think Remillia! Think!’

Her limbs felt like lead, her breaths came in shallow gasps, but she knew she couldn’t stop now. The serpent’s tail twitched, and she realized it was trying to muster the energy for one final attack. If she didn’t finish it off now, they would probably all die in here.

’Move!’

Remillia gripped her arcanum tightly, forcing her legs to move despite the overwhelming exhaustion that threatened to pull her down. The serpent’s head was lower now, sluggish and slow, but its venomous fangs were still dangerous. She had to be quick, precise—there was no room for error.

"You can do this, one more strike and its dead."

With a deep breath, she steadied herself, summoning every last bit of strength she had left. She couldn’t afford to hesitate, not when her friends’ lives depended on her. Summoning all her willpower, she broke into a final sprint, aiming straight for Subterranea’s weak spot once more.

The serpent sensed her approach, its body trembling as it tried to lift its head for one last, desperate strike. But Remillia was faster—she leaped into the air, her arcanum raised high. As she came down, she drove the blade with all her might into the soft patch beneath Subterranea’s jaw, the steel sinking deep into the creature’s flesh.

SLASH!

This time, the effect was immediate. Subterranea let out a final, agonized roar, its body convulsing violently before it slumped to the ground. The light in its eyes faded completely, the life finally extinguished from its colossal form.

Remillia landed on her feet, but the impact nearly knocked her over. She staggered, her vision swimming with exhaustion. She looked back at Ezekiel and Edge, who were lying motionless, though still breathing, on the ground.

[Congratulations on your first ever kill of an Apex grade monster!]

"Hehe."

She can’t help but laugh as she knows a reward will soon be given by her. She tried to click the notification but her arms won’t budge as she fell down but before succumbing to a deep slumber, she heard voices coming in the north.

"Why are they always late in rescuing?"

When the rescue team finally arrived at the scene, they were greeted by a sight that left them speechless. This part of the forest was almost unrecognizable, the ground torn apart, scorched by lightning, and littered with debris. The towering trees that once stood proudly were now splintered and charred, their remains scattered across the area. The air still crackled with residual energy from the violent clash, and the massive form of Subterranea lay motionless, its once-fearsome presence now reduced to a lifeless heap.

They had been alerted to the appearance of an apex monster, a creature of such danger that even seasoned Heroes would struggle to take it down. Yet, as they hurried toward the three unconscious students, they couldn’t reconcile what they saw with the capabilities of these mere students.

Gusion’s keen eyes swept over the scene, taking in every detail. His gaze finally settled on the fallen students—Ezekiel and Edge lying motionless, their bodies battered but alive, and Remillia slumped nearby, her face pale from exhaustion. Her hand still loosely gripped the hilt of her dagger, laying beside the dead Subterranea.

"Incredible..." Gusion muttered, his voice tinged with awe. "These students... they actually defeated it."

Instructor Jude knelt beside the unconscious Remillia, his normally stern expression softening as he checked her pulse. "It’s a miracle they’re alive," he said quietly, shaking his head in disbelief. "An apex monster like this... even a group of experienced Heroes would have struggled."

Gusion nodded, his gaze shifting back to the fallen serpent. "But it would have been even worse if it weren’t for her." He pointed to Remillia, the exhaustion etched into her features a testament to the battle she had endured. "She must have delivered the final blow. Without it, the creature might have recovered and finished them all."

Instructor Jude looked down at Remillia with a newfound respect. "She’s stronger than we realized," he said, his voice filled with admiration. "To think she had the presence of mind and the strength left to strike the final blow..."

The rescue team quickly got to work, carefully lifting the three students onto stretchers. As they did, Gusion and Jude continued to survey the field, still trying to wrap their minds around what had transpired. They knew these students had potential, but what they had just witnessed went beyond anything they could have expected.

"We need to get them back and make sure they’re treated immediately," Instructor Jude said, his tone returning to one of authority. "And then... we’ll have to reassess their training. If they’re capable of this, who knows what else they can achieve?"

Archmage Gusion shook his head in disapproval. "We can’t, considering how Remillia wanted to keep it a low profile. We should get their approval if they want to reassess their strength again."

"But it’s a waste now that we have prodigies-"

"Sir Jude, I must warn you, stop what your thinking now. Even though they would soon be confirmed as prodigies, let them decide on their own."

"You’re right. I’m sorry, I got too excited."

"Keep this a secret."

"Understood."

Remillia’s eyes fluttered open, her vision blurry as she slowly regained consciousness. The first thing she noticed was the soft, warm glow of sunlight filtering through the unfamiliar curtains. The room around her was quiet, the walls adorned with simple but elegant decorations, a stark contrast to the chaotic battlefield she had last seen.

"Ugh, where am I?"

She tried to sit up, but as soon as she moved, a sharp, stinging pain shot through her lower left abdomen. She winced, her hand instinctively going to the source of the pain. Her fingers brushed against rough bandages wrapped tightly around her waist.

Memories of the the fight with an Apex monster came flooding back—the towering form of Subterranea, the desperate fight, and the final strike that had brought the serpent down. She remembered collapsing next to the monster, exhaustion overwhelming her as everything faded to black.
