I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 49: Something Happened to Caleb Forrest’s Family
"But... it’s so much money. I..." Irene Lynch had lived an upright life, and a windfall like this truly made her uneasy.
"Mom, nobody knows who the original owner was, or even if they’re still alive. If you feel uneasy about keeping it, we can wait for the right opportunity, exchange it for cash, and donate it to a good cause."
"But we absolutely can’t bring it out now," Grace Winslow said, pressing the back of her mother’s hand.
Irene Lynch sighed. "I know. I’ll go hide it properly in a moment. Don’t worry, Mom knows the stakes."
Irene Lynch went to hide the gold bars.
Grace Winslow flipped through the rest of the books but found nothing else of value. They were just ordinary books.
She did, however, find a few letters with rather pretty stamps on them.
Grace Winslow liked how they looked, so she cut them out and tucked them between the pages of a book.
Irene Lynch returned a moment later.
She helped Grace Winslow pack the remaining books into a bag.
After lunch, Grace Winslow set off for the factory a little after three o’clock.
Before she left, Irene Lynch secretly stuffed some money and ration tickets into her bag, along with a good amount of homemade cured pork and preserved vegetables.
Grace Winslow had just reached the factory gates when someone stopped her.
"Grace, Caleb Forrest’s family is in trouble, did you hear?"
It was Mrs. Sawyer, who used to live next door to Caleb Forrest.
Grace Winslow shook her head. "I don’t, and I don’t want to."
"That Ivy White, she’s not the homemaker type at all. And I don’t know what got into Caleb Forrest. You had barely left and he was already rushing to marry her."
"Just yesterday, the two of them got into a fight over something."
"It’s one thing for couples to fight. I mean, who doesn’t these days? But they always kiss and make up, right?"
"But this fight was vicious. The child Ivy White brought with her was dropped in the middle of it."
"Oh, let me tell you, the poor child! So little, and to fall from that high up... His head was split open, blood all over his face."
"Ivy White was wailing and screaming her head off."
"Some people from the factory helped take them to the hospital."
"You’re lucky you divorced him when you did. That Caleb Forrest must have a violent streak. The factory will probably issue a formal reprimand."
Mrs. Sawyer didn’t care whether Grace wanted to listen or not, spilling everything in a rush, like dumping out a bag of beans.
Grace Winslow was actually a little surprised.
Caleb Forrest was always obsessed with his image and was very good at playing the part of a good man.
In her past life, he’d kept up the facade for years without ever letting it slip.
He had never so much as raised his voice at her.
’He and Ivy White have only been married a few days, haven’t they?’
’And he’s already resorting to violence?’
’Just as I thought. My rebirth in this life has changed so many things. Caleb Forrest and Ivy White’s so-called love wasn’t so unshakeable after all.’
"Mrs. Sawyer, I’m not interested in their affairs," Grace Winslow replied with a smile.
Mrs. Sawyer chuckled. "Of course, I know that. You’re not like that Ivy White, you’re not one to gossip. It’s just me, I can’t keep my mouth shut. I see someone, I have to say a few words. You go on, you’re busy. Don’t mind me. Oh, I’ll go find someone else to jaw with."
As she spoke, Mrs. Sawyer spotted an acquaintance and ran off, leaving Grace Winslow behind.
Grace Winslow shook her head.
’Mrs. Sawyer was a notorious bigmouth. With her spreading the news, the whole world would soon know all about Caleb Forrest’s dirty laundry.’
Grace Winslow rode her bike back to the dorm.
Downstairs from her dorm building, she saw a disheveled Caleb Forrest.
Ivy White had really done a number on him. Caleb Forrest’s face was covered in scratches and one of his eyes was swollen shut. Standing there, he looked completely dejected and pathetic.
Grace Winslow stopped in her tracks.
But Caleb Forrest had already seen her.
