Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Found a Treasure

"It’s you?"

Grace and Archer spoke at almost the same time.

Afterward, both of them couldn’t help but laugh.

Grace glanced at the spot next to him. A large pile of books was stacked there, mostly high school textbooks. It seemed he was also prepping for the college entrance exams.

"I’m looking for a friend," Archer said, explaining when he noticed Grace’s gaze and glanced down at the books.

"I’ll go look over there, then." Grace pointed to the side, gave a quick nod, and went on her way.

Both of them were quiet, each searching for what they needed.

In her past life, Grace Winslow had never worked a single day, but thanks to Timothy Dunn, her level of knowledge was quite high.

After all, how could someone capable of tutoring a university student be lacking?

She purposefully selected books that interested her.

Many books were impossible to find at the salvage station, but Grace was content with what she could get.

She picked out a dozen or so books, put them in a woven bag, and then added some old newspapers and a few magazines. When she felt she had enough, she left.

Archer glanced at her, silently placing a book to the side. He didn’t even notice the title on the cover: *Jin Ping Mei*.

Grace had only picked books, which were the least valuable things at the moment, all sold by weight.

On the scale, they weighed in at sixteen *jin*, and the charge was sixteen cents.

Grace paid readily and headed home with her things.

"What took you so long? What did you buy?" Irene Lynch had been worried something might have happened to Grace. Relieved to finally see her back, she hurried forward to help with her things.

Grace smiled. "There isn’t much work at the factory, so I finished up quickly. It’s always boring being idle, so I thought I’d read more. Who knows, it might be useful later on, right?"

Irene Lynch thought about it and agreed.

"That’s true. But these books were just lying in the salvage station; they must be so dirty. Let me tidy them up for you. Once they’re clean, you can take them back to the factory."

With that, she carried the bag of books inside to sort them out.

A moment later, Irene Lynch’s startled cry came from inside.

Grace thought something had happened and rushed into the room.

She saw Irene Lynch holding a book. The cover was open, but inside wasn’t the content of a proper book at all. Instead, it was filled with several neatly stacked small gold bars.

Her expression changed instantly. She strode forward and snapped the book shut. "Mom, you didn’t see anything just now, right?"

"Grace, this..." 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

This was something that couldn’t see the light of day. If they were discovered, the whole family would be in deep trouble.

Grace’s mind was in turmoil now, too.

She hadn’t expected her luck to be this good.

The book was a collection of miscellaneous records. It had looked thick, and she had assumed it was full of interesting anecdotes and trivia, so she had tossed it into her bag and brought it home.

Who would have thought it would be stuffed with gold bars!

Grace’s heart trembled. After a moment’s thought, she opened the book again, took out all the small gold bars, and counted them. There were eight in total, each weighing 100 grams. That meant there was over a *jin* of gold here!

This stuff was hard currency, valuable no matter the era.

Irene Lynch’s heart was about to leap out of her chest. "Grace, what are we going to do? Should... should we return it?"

"We can’t return it. Mom, you keep it safe. It’s not safe for me to take it back to the factory. Find a secure place at home and hide it."

"Our family has a clean background. We won’t attract the kind of jealousy that gets people’s houses searched. As long as we don’t tell anyone about this, no one will ever know."

"As for what to do with it later, we can figure that out down the road."

Once a few years passed and things settled down, they would be able to use it.
