I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 33: Of Course I Want My Job
"Director Osborne, Ivy’s husband died in the line of duty. When dealing with the family of a martyr, shouldn’t we be a little more..." Seeing Ivy’s pitiful state, Caleb Forrest couldn’t help but speak up for her.
May Callahan rolled her eyes. "Caleb Forrest, you’re so quick to defend her. Why don’t you pay the money back for her, then? Surely you’re not the family of a martyr too, are you?"
"Director, the factory has its rules. She stole a colleague’s files without permission, which resulted in a massive loss for the factory. Either she retrieves the money, or she pays for the damages. There are only two ways forward."
"Or she could just go to jail. After all, undermining the socialist economy is no small crime."
"I... I’ll get the money back," Ivy White said meekly.
May Callahan couldn’t be bothered with her act. "Fine. Since you say you’re going to get the money back, you have three days."
"By the way, Director Osborne, I don’t want this woman. Director Forrest recommended her, so you can deal with her. Grace, on the other hand, was someone I personally recruited. She passed rigorous screenings and evaluations. If she’s still willing to work, I still want her on my team."
After she finished, May Callahan winked at Grace Winslow.
Grace Winslow couldn’t help but smile.
She could tell May Callahan was standing up for her.
After all, with Ivy White and Caleb Forrest’s relationship being so shady, she, as the legal wife, really did look rather pitiful.
"Of course I want the job I worked so hard for," Grace said after a moment’s thought. "However, since I’m divorcing Caleb Forrest, would the factory be able to arrange for a spot in the dormitory? My family’s home is in town, which is a bit far."
’The college entrance exams won’t be reinstated for a while. I can’t just stay at home all the time; people are bound to gossip.’
’I don’t care what they say, but I can’t let it disrupt the peace at home.’
"Yes, we do have some vacant employee dormitories," Oscar Osborne said after a moment of deliberation. "Caldwell, please arrange a place for Comrade Grace Winslow. It’s thanks to her suggestion of a financial audit that we uncovered such a huge issue. And since we’ve caught it early, there’s still a chance to recover the money."
Gregory Winslow shot him a glare.
’He had finally seen his precious daughter get a divorce, hoping she would spend a few days at home with him. But now, in the blink of an eye, she’d gotten a job and was even moving into the factory.’
’Doesn’t this mean I’ll only get to see her on her two days off each month?’ 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺
Securing the job for Grace Winslow wasn’t an issue.
After all, she hadn’t gotten the job because of Caleb Forrest. She had earned it on her own merit.
Before marrying Caleb Forrest, she had already graduated from high school with top marks.
If the college entrance exams hadn’t been canceled, she would have certainly been admitted to a university.
After a brief chat with May Callahan to confirm she would start work the next day, Grace Winslow led Gregory Winslow and her brother out of Oscar Osborne’s office.
Caleb Forrest was waiting at the door with a grim expression for Grace Winslow to come out.
"Grace, you..."
"Caleb Forrest, I came back today to pack my things and to finalize our divorce. Grab your identification card. The sooner we get this done, the better, so I don’t stand in the way of you and Ivy White." As Grace Winslow spoke, her eyes flickered toward Ivy White’s stomach.
"Do you really have to be so heartless? Our..." Caleb Forrest’s face fell.
The anger welling up inside him instantly vanished the moment he heard Grace mention the word "divorce."
He still wanted to try and salvage their marriage.
Nolan Winslow stepped forward. "Caleb Forrest, there’s no point in dragging this out. Anyone can see how you and Ivy White are all over each other. Don’t waste my sister’s time. Just get the divorce over with. You’ll be free to marry who you want, and so will she. It’s better for everyone."
Caleb Forrest knew it was useless to say anything more.
Grace Winslow’s mind was made up; she was determined to divorce him.
He couldn’t help but think of the man he had seen at the hospital the other day.
’Grace is in such a rush to divorce me. Could it really be because of that man?’
