Chapter 34: Chapter 34: What Rotten Luck

Nolan Winslow took Grace Winslow and Caleb Forrest to finalize the divorce.

Meanwhile, Brandon Winslow and Gregory Winslow went back to Caleb Forrest’s house to wait and help Grace Winslow pack her things.

The divorce proceedings went smoothly.

Grace Winslow was resolute. Although Caleb Forrest hesitated, he was too proud to object and quickly signed the papers as well.

When their marriage certificate was replaced by divorce papers, Caleb Forrest still felt like he was in a dream.

’He and Grace had only been married for a little over three months, and now they were divorced?’

He had imagined a future with Grace.

They would have a few adorable children.

Their daughters would be like Grace, their sons like him.

Their little family would lead a simple life. They might not have been fabulously wealthy, but they would have been safe and happy.

But then the dream suddenly shattered.

To this day, he still didn’t understand why.

’Was she really that desperate for a divorce, just because he wanted Ivy White to move in with them?’

"Grace, I want to ask you something," Caleb Forrest said, unable to stop himself as he stood watching the retreating backs of Grace and Nolan Winslow. "If it weren’t for Ivy White, would you still have divorced me?"

Grace Winslow stopped in her tracks. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Now that she was divorced, she was in a decent mood and willing to give Caleb Forrest a moment of her time. "Yes, I would have."

"You weren’t honest with me from the start. You hid the truth about your mother, only letting my family know about her condition on the eve of our wedding. After we were married, she made my life miserable every single day, and you always guilt-tripped me with ’filial piety,’ expecting me to fulfill your duties and take care of her for you."

"But Caleb, why should I be the one fulfilling your filial duties?"

"My own parents are the ones who gave birth to me and raised me. If I’m going to be a dutiful daughter to anyone, it should be to them."

"As for Ivy White... even if it wasn’t her, it would have been some Vicky Hale or Vivian Lowell. She isn’t the root of the problem. You are."

With that said, Grace didn’t give Caleb another glance and left with Nolan.

Arriving back at the apartment she had shared with Caleb, Grace felt a wave of emotion wash over her.

She had been so full of hope when they first got married.

But after only three months, life had worn her down completely.

Back then, listening to Cindy Lowell’s daily tirades and waiting on her hand and foot, Grace had loved Caleb enough to endure it all for his sake.

Now that the love was gone, she realized how laughably foolish she had been.

The moment she stepped into the master bedroom, Grace’s expression soured.

She had left in such a hurry that she hadn’t packed most of her belongings, taking only her ID and other important documents, along with the money and ration coupons she had brought into the marriage.

’I originally thought Caleb and Ivy had at least some sense of decency.’

’But now that I think about it, what decency can you expect from people like them?’

In the bedroom, all the clothes that were hers had been worn by Ivy White.

They were strewn carelessly across the bed.

The jar of vanishing cream on her dresser had also been used by Ivy.

Grace felt utterly repulsed.

Of course, she wasn’t going to take any of these things.

But she wasn’t about to leave them for Ivy to use, either.

She sorted through her belongings, packing up everything Ivy had touched into separate bags, while the rest filled a trunk.

As the youngest and most doted-on daughter of the Winslow family, Grace had brought a sizable dowry with her when she married, packed in numerous trunks and boxes.

Grace had Gregory and the others help her move every last bit of it, leaving nothing behind.

Oscar Osborne had arranged a place for Grace to live. It was a single’s dormitory not too far away, housed in a separate, single-story building.

The room wasn’t large—only about eighty square feet—and contained just a simple wooden plank bed.

But Grace was overjoyed.

This was her very own fresh start.

A brand-new future, completely free of Caleb Forrest.

She directed the Winslow brothers as they arranged all the things she had brought over. Soon, the once-empty room was transformed into a cozy and warm space.

"Dad, brothers, let’s go burn those other things," she said. "We’ll burn away all the bad luck. Then it will be a true new beginning."
