Chapter 69: 69:heartfelt gift

Atheline observed the servant’s reluctant movement at the corner of his eyes and frowned inwardly.

’What the hell is in that box to make them this reluctant’

Lilith turned to them and patted the space next to them on the bed.

"Bring it here," she said the playful smile still present.

The anticipation she was showing was on the verge of breaking through her well-crafted expression.

’I just hope he likes it, I prepared it especially for him.’

Her fingers lightly played with his as she watched the servants place the wooden box on the bed cover. Another came forward and pulled the small cloth covering the box.

’Oh light!’

Atheline stared in silence at the contents inside the box his shock evident. He didn’t know how to even react to the supposed present since he couldn’t even understand their meaning.

He glanced up at Lilith to see her smiling at him as she eagerly waited for his reaction.

"Well?"

In the box were three perfectly preserved heads. That wasn’t even the worst part. The eyes had been pulled out of their sockets and what he assumed was the female head had fresh open scars on its face.

Their expression were frozen perfectly. Horror.

Atheline gulped.

’She just keeps giving me mini heart attacks and surprises doesn’t she?’

The thought passed through him but it carried a small fondness. Atheline couldn’t recognise who they were and he didn’t know how to tell her that.

She spoke before he could come up with a positive response.

"They were still in the forest," she said lightly while playing with his fingers," I went back after laying you down and found them just leaving the forest. "

When she said that, recognition flushed through his mind. There was only one forest he had been to and the only people she would hunt down were those three who revealed her identity.

"I wanted to tell you when I came back," she complained quietly," I had already planned everything and they took the moment from me."

She sounded angrier the more she spoke. Her gaze flickered to the heads then back to him.

Atheline looked at the heads a warm feeling flashing.

’How sweet’

He had been busy investigating everything about those three and here she was having caught them already.

"Thank you," he said with a smile.

A smile bloomed bigger than the last.

"Do you like it?" She insisted her fingers interlocking with his," I’ll always remove anything that threatens us."

Her gaze became darker as her hands tightened around his. It felt more like she was talking to herself than talking to him.

She didn’t wait for his answer but continued talking.

"I’ll always remove anything that threatens us," she mumbled, "....anything that could take you away from me."

Behind her, the servants bowed their heads, each trying to appear as small as possible.

She moved closer to him and leaned against him just like always. Atheline wrapped his hand around her waist pulling her closer to him.

His gaze went to the servants his message clear. They picked the heads on the bed and left the room giving them privacy.

She looked up at him, her eyes felt invasive on some level, boring into his soul.

"Say something," she murmured.

His free hand cupped her cheek his thumb rubbing softly against her skin.

Atheline kissed her forehead.

"You handled it well."

She laughed softly. It was clear she had been waiting for his approval.

"You’re not disturbed," she said, almost to herself.

"I would be," he replied," if you hadn’t done it."

She fully sat on his lap and Atheline held her to him.

"I liked it when you said that, you always have the right things to say" she said the previous vulnerability vanishing like it never existed.

Atheline smirked noticing her change instantly.

"Really? What more do you like about me?" He asked.

"Well, everything causes it all belongs to me," she answered confidently.

"Yeah, then I guess you have to make sure your prize is well taken care of. Don’t ever miss anything"

She nodded and leaned against him burrowing into his arms.

"Of course."

Lilith smiled as the memory of the procurement of the three gifts she had given him flowed into her mind.

Water dripped slowly down the damp walls as she walked down the dark dungeon hallway.

This was one of the structures she had personally asked to be built, a private prison that only a few had access to.

She reached the door and pushed it open, the anger that was boiling inside of her still looking for a release.

Atheline was in her bed, fully asleep. She wanted him to wake up with her lying beside him but she had to get rid of the pests that had ruined her plans

It irritated her to no end that the thought of skinning them alive sounded more appealing than anything but she already had grander plants.

She had to put her beloved first, always.

"I thought you’d be screaming by now," she said the moment she opened the door to the closed cell.

The guard standing inside stepped back and out of the room leaving her with her three prisoners.

The three had their hands tied to the ceiling. The ropes had dug into their skins turning bloody as they hung, barely holding themselves up by their toes.

The moment she got near them, the prisoner on the right spat missing her shoes.

"I guess I’ll have to go the more extreme route," she said softly and stepped towards the prisoner who had spat on her.

"Will you tell me who sent you?" She asked.

They were all quite each ignoring her question.

The shouts of the first prisoner started the other two. Blood flowed down his leg from the large gash in his thigh.

Their bodies trembled as they witnessed the Horror. Flesh and bone were separating slowly by slow as she sliced down carelessly but with certain precision.

His shouts had already stopped and only the laboured breaths that occasionally escaped him showed his remaining life.

"I’ll give you two choices, " she calmly said," I can skin you alive or give you a more peaceful death."

The man remaining of the two started to tremble more visibly. The ropes cut deeper into his flesh as he subconsciously tried to struggle.
