Kate Palmer arrived at the office early. As she accepted the coffee handed over by the assistant, she turned on her computer, sipping her coffee as she waited for it to boot up.

DING!

With a slight sound, a new email popped up on the just-booted computer—From: Vera Wave.

What’s up with this girl, sending emails so early?

Holding the coffee cup in one hand, Kate moved the mouse to open the email, only to jump at the sight of the words "Resignation Letter" in the attachment.

Putting down her cup, she quickly downloaded and opened the attachment, reading it carefully from beginning to end. Then, she immediately got up, swiftly leaving her office for the Planning Department.

At this time, it was just office hours and the staff of the Planning Department were gradually taking their positions.

Upon seeing Kate, everyone greeted her proactively. Acknowledging their greetings with a nod, Kate moved swiftly to Vera’s office.

"Director Palmer, Vera isn’t here yet!" Merlin Bradley noticed and promptly stood up. "Is there anything you’d like me to pass on to her?"

Kate turned to look at Merlin and asked quietly, "Do you know about Vera resigning?"

"Ah..." Merlin gaped. "You’re joking, right?"

"Does my expression look like I’m joking?" Kate retorted in a serious tone.

Merlin’s face froze. "She...she never mentioned that."

Merlin quickly used a spare key to do so, and Kate entered Vera’s office with steady strides.

The office was neat and tidy; from the windowsill to the desktop, everything was dust-free and gleaming. On one side of the desk, there was a paper bag with snacks peeking out.

On the desk, a printed paper, with faint text visible, was weighted down by a pen holder.

Kate moved closer and lifted the pen holder.

"Please forgive my abrupt departure. Share these snacks among yourselves. Best of luck."

The paper was simply signed, Vera.

As Merlin read the message on the paper, she froze on the spot.

"No wonder she suddenly invited us out for a meal yesterday and said all those things...she was planning to resign!"

Kate retracted her hand from the paper. "Don’t announce this yet. If anyone asks, say she’s on leave for a few days."

She picked up the A4 paper and left the Planning Department’s office briskly, heading back to her own. Instantly, she took out her phone and dialed Tommy Taylor’s number.

"Assistant Taylor, this is Kate Palmer. There’s something I’d like to ask you about."

Kris Cooper woke at nine in the morning. He reached for his watch on the bedside table and glanced at the time before putting it down. Turning over, he reached out an arm to embrace his girl, only to find the bed empty.

He muttered in surprise, Little sleepyhead, up earlier than me? He stretched with a lazy yawn, then got out of bed and went to the bathroom door. "Honey, I’m coming in, okay?"

No response came from inside. He pushed the door open, but the bathroom was dark and empty.

Where is she?!

Leaving the bathroom, he looked around, noticed a door ajar, and walked over to open it and step outside the bedroom.

"Honey, stop hiding. I know you’re here!"

Still, no reply.

He walked to the Study Room across the hall and pushed open the door. It was empty.

Raising an eyebrow, a possibility occurred to him, and he immediately went downstairs.
