I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 458 - 457: Deep Love Results in Loneliness (10)
In the room, a small night lamp glowed. He had left it on, fearing she might wake up during the night. By the light, his face was clearly visible. The sleeping man was handsome and serene, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips. He must be having a wonderful dream.
She walked into the walk-in closet, quickly changed her clothes, and carefully stepped out of the room. On the pillow, Kris Cooper was still fast asleep. After working all day and being pestered endlessly by the young woman all evening, he had only fallen asleep in the wee hours of the morning. He was, no doubt, sleeping very soundly now.
She walked to the bedside, took the note she had prepared from the drawer, and placed it on the table. Vera Wave lifted her left hand and carefully removed the wedding ring from her ring finger. In the dim light, the diamond on the wedding ring still sparkled with a magnificent luster.
Taking a shallow breath, she gently placed the ring on the note. She glanced at the man on the pillow, bit her lip, and turned towards the door. Just as her hand grasped the doorknob, the cellphone on the table began to ring urgently.
"Master, don’t throw me away!"
Her spirits sinking, she realized she had forgotten her cellphone again. Startled, Vera rushed over and quickly silenced the phone’s alert.
A soft rustle came from the pillow. She turned to see Kris Cooper lifting his arm, groping for something on the bedsheets. Her heart tightened. She quickly reached out and took his hand. Feeling her hand, the man clasped her small hand in his, pulled it to his chest, and held it there. Seemingly reassured, he settled down and continued to sleep.
Vera’s tears almost fell. Gazing at his face, she couldn’t help but feel her resolve weaken. When he wakes up tomorrow morning and sees she’s not here, he’ll definitely be furious, won’t he?
Her arm extended, she hesitated for a long moment. Finally, steeling herself, she gently slipped her hand out from under his.
"Sweetheart, I’m sorry!"
She whispered this, gently kissed his forehead, then clenched her fists, grabbed her phone, and hurried out of his room, closing the door behind her.
As she descended the stairs, she didn’t dare to stop, didn’t dare to slow down, didn’t dare to look back... She feared that if she stopped, she would never be able to leave.
She picked up her bag from the entrance hall. Hearing a faint jingle, she glanced down. A set of keys hung from a chain on her bag—the apartment keys. He had attached them with a chain to her bag strap, afraid she might forget them.
She removed the keys and hung them on the hook beside the door. Vera then opened the main door, stepped over the threshold, bit her lip, and, with her back to the room, pulled the door shut. The door clicked softly as it latched, then locked securely.
He was inside; she was outside. From now on, they would be in two different worlds.
Her heart felt as if a knife had sliced through it. Vera hurried to the elevator. She rushed out of the apartment building and ran onto the street. There, she hailed a taxi and gave the address of the old family home.
The taxi driver glanced at her in the rearview mirror and started the car. As the car pulled away, an old song began to play from the car stereo.
"You gave me an address to that sky
Only because it’s too high, I fell and bled endlessly
...
...
I want to follow you for a lifetime
At least in such a world, there is no harsh reality
I want to depend on you for a lifetime
To be the last angel in your heart
...
...
I’m only afraid that when I wake from the dream, we’ll be worlds apart
No one can undo this separation
Love and hate can be muddled, responsibilities unquestioned
When day breaks, will I still be your woman?
...
..."
Vera pulled a crisp bill from her wallet and handed it to him, her gaze lowered as she spoke softly.
"Driver, keep the change. You can stop up ahead!"
The taxi pulled over to the side of the road. She got out, and the car drove away.
After taking a few steps along the roadside, Vera sank to her knees, utterly drained. Instantly, tears streamed down her face like rain.
...
...
By this point, I’ve tortured myself to death writing this.
Special note: This story won’t feature any plotlines with another separation lasting several years~!~
