I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 258: Is this a dream to you?
"What’s on your mind?" Raymond asked Alexa who was simply staring at them with no words said.
"You two." She suddenly answered. It was a rather subconscious response but that was what was in her mind. "You two act so similar that sometimes, I wonder if you two are actually related."
Her words caused the two to freeze for a second and then smiled anxiously. Rachael turned her head away, as if occupied with looking at other things, leaving Raymond to respond on his own.
"Daddy, I want to go find Romeo." She said, and Raymond felt his daughter was betraying him and trying to abandon him at such a crucial time.
"Sure, you can go." Alexa said on Raymond’s behalf and he put her down. "But don’t stray out of the guard’s sight, okay? Don’t make us worry."
"Don’t worry. I won’t."
They both watched Rachael run around freely and the guards going to her.
Then, Raymond looked at Alexa and said,
"She’s happy."
Alexa turned her head to look at him and nodded.
"I guess she is." She said and smiled nervously. "I’ve never seen Rachael this happy and it really makes me happy."
"Are you happy simply because she’s happy?" Raymond asked and Alexa paused. "Leaving Rachael’s happiness aside, are you happy?" 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Alexa didn’t think she’d be asked that question and she lowered her head. Was she happy?
’Am I happy?’ she thought to herself and ended up smiling without realizing it? So she raised her head and said, "I am. I’m so happy that I don’t want this to end. But it’s so much that I feel if I were to succumb to this happiness and take it as my reality, everything would go wrong somehow and I’d be disappointed to discover everything was actually a dream. I worry too much."
She smiled nervously.
"Then," Raymond suddenly took her hand in his and asked, "...do you think you have been living in a dream all along? Has this been a dream for you? This happiness?"
She looked at him and pursed her lips, nodding.
"Yes. This has been nothing but a dream, but I don’t want to wake up." Her eyes grew teary. "I don’t want to wake up to find Rachael depressed and my life filled with nothing but work, keeping me from my child and the attention she needs. I can’t... I can’t take it. If I indulge in this happiness and it turns into shambles, I don’t think I can take it."
Raymond watched Alexa’s tears roll down her cheeks, his heart wrenching for her. Seeing her cry, he badly wanted to hug her and reassure her that this was far from a dream. This was reality. Her reality, but with so many eyes on them, he needed to be careful with his words and interaction with her.
"I’m sorry, I’m crying again. I’m so weak yet all I can do is cry." She said and suddenly jolted, looking up in shock like she had experienced something like this before. Like a deja Vu.
She looked at the expression of suppressed pain on Raymond’s face and the way he held her hand. He was worried for her and she seemed to remember this similar scene happened before.
She was crying at the time too and Raymond looked like he would cry with her, having a look of suppressed pain in his face.
She was always crying in the past and...
"I’m sorry." She apologized but then he told her,
"Crying doesn’t mean you’re weak." He said and slid her hair aside, brushing the tears off her cheek with his thumb. "Cry it out, it’ll make you feel better. And at the end, you can finally come to terms with the fact that this is reality. It’s not a dream, Alexa. None of this is."
Alexa was confused. Why did it feel like he had said similar words to her in the past? She couldn’t remember. She wanted to rule it out to be a simple case of deja Vu but it felt too vivid to be that. It was too damn real to ignore...
"Um, Raymond..." She called, her eye scanning his face carefully to detect any change in his expression. "Before... Have you said these words to me?"
Raymond flinched and she caught on to it. What was this? Did he really say those words to her before her memories disappeared? But... How was that possible?
His grip on her hand also slightly tightened and he bowed his head, pressing her hand to his head.
"Did you suddenly remember something?" He asked under his breath. "You’re not supposed to remember, not now."
"What are you saying?" Alexa asked unable to make out the words from his hushed breath and Raymond raised his head, showing the sorry look in his eyes.
"Alexa, I promise I’ll tell you everything when your memory gets back." He said. "But for now, please keep living in the bliss of oblivion. Keep living as you are, okay?"
He stroked her face with a warm smile on his face. Though she did not understand what he meant by that, she ended up nodding and sinking her cheek into his warm touch.
"Okay." She said.
He was glad that she was being cooperative with this and not throwing a fuss. Contrary to his plans of keeping her in the dark for as long as possible, it seemed she would find out quicker than he anticipated.
And it was because she was regaining her memories. He didn’t rule out this possibility but it couldn’t be helped and she would soon come to terms with her past. Their past.
And it actually felt better than he thought. The hurtful past aside, knowing she would remember how much they loved each other warmed his heart.
"You owe me a detailed explanation later." She said with a cheerful smile and Raymond laughed.
"Yes, of course." He said, holding both sides of her face and leaning in to kiss her forehead.
"What are you doing? They’re all staring." Alexa said with a little flush on her cheek but Raymond didn’t care.
The guests could stare and make up stories to their heart’s content. He was with the woman he loved, the mother of his child and his wife, so he didn’t care what anyone thought.
"Mummy," Rachael appeared from behind, shocking both of them and they instinctively separated. Not like they were doing anything wrong but it was a sort of reflex... maybe.
"Did you play with Romeo?" Alexa asked, brushing her hair aside in a frantic attempt to look normal and Rachael, who was extremely delighted at what she saw, rested her body on her mother’s legs and smiled with her full teeth on display.
"I couldn’t find him." She said and darted her eyes to her father. "You two seemed to be having a nice conversation. What was it about?"
Raymond cleared his throat and looked away.
"It’s nothing serious." He said, "Do you want to open your presents?"
"Hmm, nope." Rachael answered. "It’s all insincere anyway." She said and this made Alexa look down at her.
"Forget about sincerity." Raymond said and smirked with evil intentions. "It’s their loss and your gain, so it doesn’t matter if they gave it to you without honest intentions. What do you think? You stand a lot to gain from their vain nature."
Rachael equally smirked and rubbed her fingers together.
"I get what you mean, Daddy. Let’s dupe them of all their assets." They both laughed maniacally and once again, Alexa felt, ’What a great father-daughter combo.’
They were so alike that she looked like the stranger in their midst. But thanks to the resemblance her daughter had with her, she could never be counted out as odd. Phew.
But she was worried though.
Yes, a lot of them here were just here to make connections and look good in front of Raymond Stein but she couldn’t feel comfortable with the fact that her daughter never saw people in a good light.
And then such an incident happened... She sighed. Will her daughter ever get to live a normal life?
She stroked her head while wishing the best for her at heart.
"Mummy, I want to use the restroom. Can you come with me?" Rachael asked and Alexa nodded.
"Yes, let’s go." She said and turned to Raymond. "We’ll just step away for a while."
"No problem. I’ll be here with the guests." He said, and they were about to leave when Raymond took out something from his inner pocket.
There was a reason why he was always so uneasy with parties. He had such bad memories about that night his wife was taken from him that he couldn’t rest easy.
And he definitely wouldn’t feel at ease with Alexa out of his sight, so he gave her something.
"Hold on a minute." He said and fixed something to her necklace. It stuck to the necklace right away and he said, "It’s a tracker. I feel uneasy so please, don’t lose it."
Alexa looked at the tracker stuck to her necklace and up at him. She could see it in his eyes that he was feeling uneasy. Whatever reason it was, she smiled and nodded.
"Don’t worry. I’ll have it on at all times."
Raymond watched as they left, hoping nothing would go wrong just because he took his eyes off them for a few minutes.
He sighed.
Romeo told his mother he would go find Rachael and once she was alone, she got a call. It was a video call from Jane and as soon as she answered, she heard Maxwell’s drunk voice.
"Where’s my wifey? I need my wifey with me. I can’t do without her. Get her here or I’ll turn this place upside down."
Her eyebrows furrowed and she asked,
"What is this?"
