Chapter 259: Please, don’t be mad

Jane followed Maxwell after he stormed out of the mansion from a safe distance. He went to a pub and beat up a few guys to let off some steam and by the time she got in, there were a lot of groaning men on the ground.

There were even a few broken pieces of furniture, thanks to him, but it was surprising how no one had called the cops.

It seemed he was well known in the area but there were still a lot who wanted to try him out for themselves and thus, they found themselves licking the floor.

Jane gulped and walked in quietly. What in the world was he thinking, honestly? She got that this was a shady pub where he could beat up guys without being reported to the police, but then, would he be okay?

She raised her gaze to the counter where the bartender was attending to Maxwell, serving him the strongest alcohol as he ordered.

’He must feel really down.’ Jane thought and sat in a safe distance, watching him.

She had planned to talk to him but with how terrible he looked, she didn’t think she would be able to get any words into his head.

And she also needed to pay attention to the bartender to make sure he didn’t do anything funny, such as putting something in his drink. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Maxwell drank like his life was on the line. He downed glass after glass while calling out the name of his dear wife.

Jane was worried for him but the moment then, he took out his gun and pointed it at a guy who was sneaking up on him. She was stunned. She didn’t even know there was someone like that creeping towards him.

Guess she worried for him for nothing.

Ugh, what was she even doing? Even in such a drunken state, he was able to take care of himself. She should better prioritize her own safety if she doesn’t want to get caught up with a weirdo.

She got up from her safe distance and went to sit on the counter. The bartender shook his head at her, signaling it would be better if she left there, lest she become a victim of his fist but she laughed it off and said,

"Don’t worry, I’m with him." She whispered to him and glanced around. "Um, is it possible to close the pub for the night? Your losses will be compensated."

The bartender looked hesitant. He could just go to his manager and tell him about it but he was unsure.

But then, Maxwell started banging his head on the table.

"Hey, stop it." Jane yelled at him and he stopped. He turned his head to look at him and she saw blood on his forehead. "You... Why are you hurting yourself?" She asked.

"Jane?" He called, "What are you doing here?"

His voice sounded sloppy, exposing how drunk he was and he looked round.

"Is my wife here? Did she come with you? Did she come to see me?" He asked in anticipation but she could only purse her lips and shake her head.

Maxwell was disappointed and he drank more alcohol.

"That’s enough. You can’t drink more."

"But I can’t stay calm." He said, "My heart hurts so much. I want my head to hurt more so I won’t feel the pain in my heart but it’s not working."

He hit his head on the table again, alarming her.

"That won’t solve any problem." She said to him, grabbing his face. "The only way you can actually rectify this is if you talk to her."

"Talk to her? I wanted to but... I don’t even know what I did wrong. I don’t..." He suddenly started crying, shocking Jane. "I’m sure I did something wrong but I... I don’t know what it is. I keep trying to think about what it is but I can’t..." He shook his head. "I can’t think of anything at all."

"That’s because you’re so oblivious." Jane said and sighed.

The bartender informed his manager and the bar was closed, leaving them alone with the bartender because Maxwell still wanted to drink more.

What to do now? Even if she told him why Paige was mad now, she didn’t believe he would understand her completely so she decided to do something else.

She took out her phone and called Paige on a video call, hoping she would pick up. And then, she asked,

"Maxwell, if Paige was here, what would you say?"

"My wifey?" He suddenly raised his head, as if he was told that Paige was there, and at that moment, Paige answered the phone. "Where’s my wifey?" He looked around. "I need my wifey with me. I can’t do without her. Get her here or I’ll turn this place upside down. I need..." He sniffed and shook his head. "I need her. She’s the only one I want. I want Paige. I only want her. Someone, give my wifey back to me."

"What is this?" Paige asked with furrowed eyebrows and Maxwell turned to the phone.

"Wifey?" He called and took the phone from Jane to see her face. As soon as he saw her, his eyes teared up and he cried. "I’m sorry. I’m sorry for everything I did. I know I did wrong but please, don’t look at me like that. Don’t ignore me. Don’t take your hand away from mine. Please, don’t be mad."

Paige watched him crying and pursed her lips. What could she do with this big crybaby?

"I’ll do anything wifey. I’ll do anything, so please, don’t be mad anymore."

"I’m not mad at you." Paige suddenly said.

"You’re lying." Maxwell wasn’t ready to believe that, after everything.

Paige sighed and said, "Give the phone to Jane for a moment for me."

Maxwell obediently handed her the phone and she asked,

"Where are you? I’m coming right away." She said, and Jane gave her the address.

Then, Jane sighed. She looked up at Maxwell who seemed to have sobered up a bit.

"Maxwell," she called and Maxwell raised his head. "Do you want me to tell you why she’s mad?"

"You know the reason?" Maxwell eagerly drew close to her. "Quickly, tell me what I did wrong."

"It’s not that you did any actual wrong, but the truth is, she’s jealous." Jane said, and Maxwell’s face was contorted. "Want me to tell you why? What would you do if Paige suddenly got close to some strange man? She laughs with him and lets him hug her anytime he wants."

"I’d kill him." Maxwell immediately answered and though it was such a big action, she guessed it’d happen somehow.

"And that’s because?" She asked but Maxwell went silent. It was like he was searching for the name of his feelings and she decided to help him. "It’s because you’re jealous."

"Jealousy? Is that it?"

"Yes." She nodded. "And just as you get jealous when you see your wife acting so close and happy with some other man, your wife definitely doesn’t like it when you’re so close to me."

"Then being close to you is a bad thing?" He asked, trying to comprehend but she shook her head.

"That’s not it. We can be close and talk like friends but there are certain boundaries we should not cross. You can’t just come to me and put your arms around me. You can’t just lift me off my feet because it seems fun, and you definitely can’t just pin me to the wall, just because you want to see me distressed. Those are things you do with your wife and your wife alone. That sort of closeness should not be shared between us, soulmates or whatnot."

"But I see siblings doing that all the time." He responded.

"Yes, they do. But they are related by blood so it can never be interpreted as a romantic relationship. If we, who have no connection at all, suddenly grow close like that, in the span of one month, anyone would suspect we have something together, even if we don’t." She explained. "So, you see, your wife feels uneasy because it’s not normal."

Maxwell gave it some thought before nodding.

"I understand."

Paige came in shortly after that and the first thing Maxwell did was hug her.

"Wifey, you’re the only one I love." He said, dropping his head on her shoulder. "I will never share that love with anyone else, so please, don’t feel insecure. The relationship between Jane and I... It’s not what you think at all."

Paige glanced at Jane who quickly darted her eyes. She did not want to be a part of their conversation in the slightest.

"I’m sorry that I was so oblivious to your feelings and my actions, but I’m being honest. You’re the only one I’ll ever love. I might like Jane but it’s nothing compared to what I feel about you. I definitely don’t want to hold her the way I hold you. I would never think of kissing her either. She’s so troublesome that I pity the man who will end up with her. But she’s a nice girl and that’s why I want to be friends with her."

He snuggled on Paige’s shoulder.

"She isn’t hypocritical, has a stupid smile most of the time, she’s very noisy, nosy, and loud, and has this crazy anger that I find amusing but it stops at that." He explained and tightened his arms around her. "So please, don’t feel like you’re being pushed away. You are my first and last and nothing can ever change that."

He raised his head from her shoulder and showed the sweet smile on his lips.

"I love you, Paige."
