I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 245: I can’t bring myself to ask
In the following days, everything quieted down. Serena didn’t try to make a move, which was a good thing for all of them. But she was still very much ’wanted’ by all countries.
Jane didn’t see much of Maxwell or Paige. She officially started working at the facility and was gradually getting used to the atmosphere. She was happy with her job.
Another thing that made her happy was the fact that she could see Alexa whenever she wanted. But soon enough, Alexa left the facility. She was happy for her too because now she could recover properly at home.
"Now that your source of distraction is gone," Steve began, "...would you like to see the new patient?"
Alexa looked at him. She had her hands in her coat pocket and smiled at his joke. She often used going to take care of Alexa as an excuse to stay away from too much work. Not that she was lazy or anything like that, she was just feeling out of sorts.
"Okay." She answered.
Steve nodded and they both went to the ward of the latest patient. It wasn’t an ordinary civilian as the facility was only open to a few well-known personnel.
They got in and Alexa laid eyes on the young man lying unconscious on the bed with a bandage wrapped around his head.
"Who is he?" She asked.
"Not someone to pay attention to." Steve answered like it was nothing and she nodded, already used to his nonchalance.
"So, what’s the problem?" She asked and Steve handed her the notepad in his hand. She looked through it, and said,
"A minor concussion." She looked up at him. "It doesn’t look too serious."
"That’s why I’m handing it over to you." Steve said and she squinted her eyes at him. Was he underestimating her? "Don’t misunderstand." He suddenly said, "You seem out of sorts these days but it’s not good to leave you without anything in your hands so I’m giving this to you. Just do a few scans on him and take his pulse. Watch his recovery progress, that’s all. Not much to do."
Jane was silent. She didn’t think he would do this for her. It was so unexpected.
He was mostly neutral in his dealings so could she take this as a sign that he approved of her?
Steve felt a bit uncomfortable with Jane’s stare and cleared his throat. He adjusted his glasses and said,
"I’ll head out now. You do your thing." Jane nodded and watched him leave. As soon as he left, she turned to the patient while smiling. It would seem she found the best place to settle down.
Meanwhile, Alexa, who was contemplating the excessive care and abundant attention she was getting from Raymond, was feeling a bit uneasy as she received some fresh air on her room balcony.
He acted like he truly cared for her and now she couldn’t even lie to herself that he was doing all this because of Rachael. His actions, his words and the way he smiled... It reminded her of the man in her dreams.
"I can’t even bring myself to ask him about it ’cause I’m scared of what he might say." She muttered to herself.
She was currently sitting in her wheelchair and staring in the direction of the garden. Everything was so peaceful. Was she allowed to feel this peaceful while living in someone else’s house?
He had done so much for her and was taking care of her daughter too, as if she were his own flesh and blood. What could she do to repay such kindness? Even the thought of getting used as a replacement didn’t matter anymore. As long as everyone was happy, it didn’t matter.
She frowned. It didn’t matter, right? It shouldn’t matter. Everyone was happy, yet... Her heart felt heavy.
"Mummy." Rachael called out in her little voice from behind and Alexa turned her head to see her.
She had a pretty pink bow tie on her head and wore a dress that had a lot of bow tie designs.
’This must be one of the dresses she got when she went out with Raymond yesterday.’ she thought.
Rachael and Raymond were practically inseparable. Rachael followed Raymond to the office every day and then on his free days, they would go shopping. They spent a lot of time together and it would almost seem like they were catching up on lost years. That is, if he was her real father.
She shook her head.
"Mummy, how do I look?" Rachael asked, twirling round to show off her new dress and Alexa smiled.
"It’s beautiful, baby. Now you no longer look like a cinnamon pie." She said and Rachael pouted her lips.
"I’m a rose now, mummy. Daddy said so." Rachael said and Alexa flinched. And to think she had gotten used to this. Hearing Rachael call Raymond Daddy was still so odd to her.
"Rachael." Raymond called from behind, entering the room to see the mother and daughter on the balcony. As soon as he saw them, his lips curled up in a warm smile and he said, "So you were here."
Alexa stared at his smile. That look on his face, as if he were staring at the one he held most dear in his heart. He was wearing a white shirt that had the first three buttons undone and his sleeves rolled up.
He looked so appealing in that getup and she slowly parted her lips to answer,
"Yes. We’re here."
Her heart kept thumping as he approached them. The feeling of actually being loved by this man overwhelmed her and even if she knew that in his eyes, when he looked at her, there was another he thought of, she didn’t want to care. As long as he could look at her as affectionately as he did just now... She didn’t want to care but... It wasn’t enough.
"Daddy." Rachael called, "Mummy likes the dress."
"I told you, didn’t I?" Raymond said, slowly and gently stroking her head.
"Mummy, let’s go on a picnic." Rachael suddenly suggested.
"A picnic?" Alexa asked and then looked at her legs. A picnic while looking like this?
Rachael walked towards her abd held her hands.
"We’re not going far. Just the garden." She pointed at the landscape below them. "It’s so pretty over there. Let’s go there and have a few snacks. Please, mummy."
