Chapter 244: The dinner

Thanks to all this, they stayed back in Germany for over a week and a half, so their return to the country was delayed. This resulted in Maxwell missing his wife a great deal, as we all saw.

(But I bet he would still miss her greatly even if they spent just a day apart)

And while those few days were filled with her playing board games with other hospitalized patients (she visited other people’s wards) every now and then and having to hear Maxwell’s silly remarks each time he visited, causing them to have a spat or the other, over at this side, a lot of things happened.

But all in all, she was glad Serena never got to Alexa again. And she hoped it stayed that way till she was caught.

Jane washed her face and fixed her hair. Since she wouldn’t have time to comb her curls, she parked it into two buns, messy buns, and went with that.

It was already nighttime so what was the use of styling her hair extraordinarily when she would go back to bed shortly after?

She got down and went to the dinner table. There was a lot of chatter and from the voices she heard, she could already tell the people that were present at the table and one of them... He was a really annoying nuisance.

"I know that voice." She muttered and got down. Yes, she expected to see him around but wasn’t it too soon? And why was he eating here?

"Ah." She watched Maxwell open his mouth for Paige to feed him. And though Paige knew Maxwell was more than capable of feeding himself, even with one arm, she went ahead to do so.

Maxwell could be so much of a child in front of Paige that it was almost impossible to believe he was a psychopath who enjoyed seeing his rivals in pain.

Jane took her seat quietly but then, Maxwell called out to her in a loud voice.

"Jane, did you rest well?"

Jane felt her eyes twitch. Why was he yelling so much? They were just a few centimeters apart, not planners apart.

"I can hear you just fine." Jane said. "And yes, I slept well." She lifted her head and immediately saw the hickey Maxwell left on Paige’s neck. It was so visible that anyone would know the cause. ’What the hell, is he a mosquito?’ she wondered.

"Aunty, eat lots of food." Rachael said to her and she nodded.

"I should be telling you that. If you eat a lot, you’ll grow quicker." She quoted and Rachael nodded before taking in a spoonful from Raymond.

The table setting was simple. At this long dining table, no one sat at the edges. Everyone sat at the side.

Rachael sat next to Raymond on the left side of the table while to the right, Maxwell sat opposite an empty chair, Paige sat opposite Raymond, Romeo sat opposite Rachael and Steve sat opposite an empty chair. But that empty Christ was currently being occupied by Jane so it was no longer empty.

Jane glanced at the empty chair before Raymond.

’Hm, I guess that would’ve been Alexa’s seat.’ she thought and looked at her food. ’Now that I think of it, the fact that Alexa is indeed Raymond Stein’s wife still shocks me. This news... How would the masses feel once they hear of it? It’s going to be big.’

Steve noticed Jane was lost in thoughts. He understood when she said she and Daniel weren’t a match made in heaven so he asked Maxwell what happened. And though Maxwell didn’t technically like Steve’s guts, he went ahead to answer.

Now, seeing her lost in thoughts, he wondered if she was thinking about her ex. He, who had never fallen in love, could not understand the pain she was feeling but if he weighed it using scientific knowledge, he would conclude that she wasn’t doing well.

A relationship of three years ending like that, and not to mention she had been sharing Daniel with another lady all the while,

’She must feel sick.’ he thought and asked, "Are you okay?"

Jane raised her head to look at him.

"Huh?"

"Your food will get cold." He said to her and she smiled.

"A minute or two won’t make my food cold. If anything, it would lessen the temperature a bit for me. It’s a bit too hot." She used this as an excuse and he knew this but he didn’t ask further. "Anyway, I heard Alexa’s getting discharged soon. How soon?"

"Probably next week. Her body has improved quite a lot so I recommend that she move to a more conducive environment." Steve said. "It’ll help her mind and body since she’ll feel much more comfortable over here."

"That’s true," Jane said. "Recovering in the hospital is important but recovering in an environment where the patient feels comfortable is the best. Her recovery process will speed up, given she’ll be able to see more of the people that care for her." She cut off a piece of her meat and chewed before going further to ask, "So, how’s the empty space? I assume it’s been filled up with sterile fluid."

"It has," Steve answered.

"What about modifications in the physiology of the chest, such as hyperinflation of the remaining lung? Shifting of the mediastinum, diaphragm elevation and narrowing of the intercostal spaces. Those contribute to the elimination of the residual space, have you done that yet?"

Steve went silent. For a moment, he almost forgot the person sitting in front of him was a doctor. A successful surgeon. Her brains were just like his.

"Aunty Jane is speaking doctor’s language." Rachael exclaimed with a slight chuckle and this made Jane realize she was in the midst of others.

"Oh gosh, I think I talked too much. Of course you would’ve done those. You’re the ’Steve’, after all. I wasn’t trying to act smart in front of you or anything, I was just..." She lowered her head. "Worried for Alexa’s sake."

"I understand." Steve said and put down his cutlery, smiling at her concern. "And don’t worry. It’s all done. And that’s why I recommended she be brought to the mansion."

Raymond, who knew Steve to rarely smile, wondered if he had taken a liking to Jane. What’s there not to like? They both spoke the same language when it came to work and since they would be working together in the future, he felt they would get along really well.

Now, there was one thing he did not understand. He looked at Maxwell. Why did he have such an expression on his face? He knew for a fact that his relationship with Steve wasn’t the best but right at that moment, it looked like he would strangle Steve, or worse, stab him with the table knife in his hand.

In any case, there was bad energy brewing. And he did not like it.
