I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 243: Nightmare; the feeling of loneliness and emptiness
Jane got to Stein’s mansion and met Rachael playing house with Romeo. Seriously, even after all that matured young lady act, she was still just a little girl.
"You’re here?" She heard Steve’s voice and turned her head.
"What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be at the facility?" Jane asked and he nodded.
"I was but Raymond called. He wants us to have a meeting of some sort." He said and glanced at the kids. "How was your trip? I reckon it was loud?"
"Haha, it was loud alright." She chuckled. "Anyway, I got back safely so that’s all I care about."
"And you guys did a good job so it’s commendable." He said, bringing her thoughts back to her acceptance letter.
"By the way, I guess you and I are going to be working together from now henceforth." She said and he looked at her, nodded and looked back at the kids.
He was not the type to show much excitement, she assumed.
"I’ll just go up to drop my things." She turned around but then he said,
"What happened?"
She stopped and looked over her shoulder.
"What?"
"I thought you went back to be with your fiance. Why did you come back?"
Jane fell silent. It seemed like Paige did not go around telling people of her situation. She wished she did. Then, she wouldn’t have to answer every single person that asked out of curiosity.
"Did something happen?" Steve asked, seemingly interested in this topic and she said,
"Let’s just say, we were never a match made in heaven."
With that, she rolled her luggage up to her room, which was formerly given to her during her last visit.
For the time being, while she adjusted to the situation and while Serena was still out at large, she would stay in the Steins mansion. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
When everything was settled and she was well adjusted, then, she would go ahead to look for an apartment to rent.
She sat on her bed and sighed. Slowly, she grazed the patch on her neck. The pain had gone down but the wound wasn’t healed yet.
"I need to go see Alexa." She told herself but she was a little too exhausted to do anything so she decided to shut her eyes for a while and then go down.
It was at a time like this when everywhere was silent that she felt her emptiness even more. All the while, she had Maxwell to disturb her and so she didn’t feel her separation as much as she was supposed to but now that she was alone... She was thinking about Daniel. She was missing him and all the times they spent together. She felt lonely.
Contrary to her intentions, Jane slept longer than she anticipated. She was sleeping so deeply that she didn’t hear the knocks on the door.
It was already late and if she didn’t get woken, she would’ve slept all through to the next morning and the person who woke her was none other than Rachael.
Since no one had sense h r since and she wasn’t answering the door, she decided to check the room herself.
She opened the door and walked in, only to see her Aunt sleeping. She looked so tired that Rachael thought of leaving her to sleep more and maybe save her dinner from later but then she saw the tears that were rolling down from her eyes, down her nose bridge.
"Nightmare?" Rachael wondered.
If it was a nightmare then the best thing would be to wake her up. There was nothing more terrible than living in a nightmare for too long.
"Aunty Jane." She shook her but Jane was too deep in her sleep to wake up from a simple shake. "Aunty."
Rachael stood still for a while, wondering what she could use to wake up her sleeping aunty. She decided on something and yelled,
"Aunty Jane, mummy is looking for you."
Jane’s eyes immediately shot open and she sat up. She looked left and right, startled and then down at Rachael.
"Where’s your mummy? Where?"
She asked but Rachael kept silent till Jane was able to understand her own situation and notice the tears that had been rolling down her eyes.
"Oh." She exclaimed and looked at Rachael who had this little mixed expression. "Did I worry you?" She asked, gently stroking her hair.
"Don’t worry, aunty. Everyone has nightmares." Rachael said, taking Jane aback. So she thought it was a nightmare that made her cry.
She smiled.
It could be considered a nightmare.
"Gosh, I almost forgot why I came here." Rachael said and grabbed Jane’s hand. "It’s time for dinner. You have to come down and eat."
"Oh, uh... I’ll be down in a moment." Jane said, resisting Rachael’s pull.
"But the food is served." Rachael said.
"I know, but I can’t go down like this, can I?" Jane smiled awkwardly. Her hair was a mess, and the tear lines were still on her face. She had to at least comb her curls properly and then wash her face before going down.
"I understand." Rachael said and let go of her hand. "I’ll tell them to cover your portion till you get down."
"Thank you." Jane said and rubbed her forehead. "By the way, is your mother doing alright?"
"Yes, mummy eats a lot now. She gets in the wheelchair and goes outside more frequently these days. She’s happy." Seeing Rachael’s happy smile, Jane could only believe that that was the case and she felt relieved. "And it seems mummy will soon get transferred from the hospital to recover at home so it’s all going great."
Jane nodded. How time flies.
After the operation, she was hospitalized. The cut on her neck wasn’t as simple as she thought. A little further in and she would’ve been dead. She lost a lot of blood and got an urgent transfusion while still unconscious.
And then there was also Maxwell who got his shoulder fractured and had to stay under the hospital’s supervision. He could’ve just returned and gotten treated at the facility but he stayed back, since there were other things he needed to take care of. Whatever that was.
Thanks to all this, they stayed back in Germany for over a week and half, so their return to the country was delayed. Resulting in Maxwell missing his wife a great deal, as we all saw.
(But I bet he would still miss her greatly even if they spent just a day apart)
And while those few days were filled with her playing board games with other hospitalized patients (she visited other people’s wards) every now and then and having to hear Maxwell’s silly remarks each time he visited, causing them to have a spat or the other, over at this side, a lot of things happened.
