Chapter 240: Is this... Midazolam?

"Just hurry up."

Jane said and slowly started making her way to the elevator.

"And if you hear a scream, ignore it." Maxwell said and turned to stare at Henry, his eyes glowing with anger and disgust at his unconscious squirming.

The sight of him having a hard time was the only thing that slightly appeased him and didn’t make him pull out his revolver to blow his head to bits. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖

Yes, he had a gun in him. It would actually sound strange if such a man didn’t carry a gun to such an operation.

Well, he once asked himself before, if he was crazy for enjoying people being in pain, not caring if they lived or died, not caring if they deserved another chance, and not caring if they were worth his sympathy... Well, his answer was no.

And why was that?

To him, as long as he saw them as they guilty, they deserved every bit of torture he meant on them. They deserve to cry in agony and show their remorse for the wrong they did and the sins they committed.

He was not god to judge but since someone had to do the dirty work while they were down on earth, he would gladly take up that job and wipe the floor with scum and insignificant human beings.

They all deserved to die. They all deserve to suffer. Even the ones who were at the side and only contributed without knowledge of what was going on. As long as they were involved, one way or the other, he would do as he pleased.

(Yeah, that’s the definition of crazy, you psychopath)

Maxwell picked up the knife and held up one of Henry’s hands.

Henry was just regaining his consciousness when he saw Maxwell holding a knife to his hand.

"Wh-what are you doing?"

It was like he had a replay of all the torture he went through when he was in confinement.

The way Maxwell whipped him with a smile on his face, carved out potions of his skin and treated it. Once his wounds started healing up, he would bring a fresh method of torture, making sure he felt even more pain than the previous time.

He was a lunatic. A complete psychopathic lunatic.

He remembered in fear, seeing Maxwell hold a knife to his finger.

"Oh, you’re up?" Maxwell asked and his eyes turned dark. "Good. I’d like to know just how painful this will feel."

With that, he chopped off Henry’s pinky finger, causing him to scream in agony. Blood gushed out of the empty spot, where his pinky used to be but he couldn’t even hold it because his other hand was broken.

Maxwell tore a piece of Maxwell’s shirt and wrapped the finger with it before putting it in his coat pocket.

"Oh and, if you manage to survive this bomb blast, be sure to let your dearly beloved know that she should kill herself before I get to her because if I do get to her, I will do much worse to her." He said with that dangerous and serious grin in his face and turned, ready to leave but paused and added. "Also, if you don’t end up getting out of here, I’ll make sure to send your finger as a souvenir, stating exactly how horrified you looked while I was chopping it off."

Maxwell caught up to Jane, who was a bit curious about the scream. Thanks to Maxwell telling her not to look back, she was completely oblivious to what he did.

"Why are you so slow?" He asked and noticed that she was looking really bad. It must’ve been the bleeding. He took out his hanky and pressed it against her neck, replacing the already soaked one and said, "Come, I’ll treat you right away."

Just as he was about to push the button on the elevator controls, they heard a loud blast from one side of the building and it shook the whole place.

"Ah, I guess we’re too late now." He said and tapped on the elevator button but it didn’t work. It would seem the controls were down already.

Guess Sernea had made sure to take out the controls first to avoid anyone from escaping with her information.

"You’ll go to hell with me." Henry yelled from where he was and started laughing like a maniac in between his agony and pain, ticking Maxwell off but he’d just have to leave his fate to the bomb.

"Wrong. You’re the only one going to hell, weirdo." Jane managed to say, giving him her middle finger.

"Wow, where did that strength come from?" Maxwell asked and she shook her head, suddenly leaning on him.

"Tell me you made a plan to escape while forming this elaborate operation." She said and he blinked.

"I didn’t." He said and her face fell.

"What?!"

"Just kidding." He said and suddenly swept her off her feet. "But we won’t be able to get to the escape spot if I let you walk."

Another explosion and the building shook once more.

"That’s two." He said and his phone started ringing. Jane didn’t need to be told before she helped him pick it up, since his hands were occupied carrying her.

"Boss, we got everyone out." His subordinate said and he nodded.

"I guess it’s just us now. Is it ready?"

"Yes, boss. The fourth window by your right."

The call ended and he looked up, scanning the rooms. Which was the room with the fourth window?

"Hm, would you mind taking out the syringe as well from my back pocket?" He asked, which led to Jane asking,

"Why do you have a syringe in your back pocket?"

"I think you should be wondering what’s inside the syringe and not why I have it." He said with a suspicious smile.

She squinted her eyes and sighed, reached for his back pocket and took out the syringe. It contained a yellow like fluid.

"Is this... Midazolam?" She asked, on recognizing the smell.

"Correct. How did you know?"

Midazolam was a type of anesthesia she used on her patients before surgery so of course she would know what it was. It helped them fall unconscious and not feel pain when the surgery was underway, as well as block any recollection if they happened to open their eyes in-between the surgery.

"How did you get this?"

"I snagged it from your drawer." He said but she couldn’t remember him ever doing that. Was he telling the truth or messing with her?

"Now, take the needle from that same pocket and inject yourself with it." Her eyes shot wide.

"What?"

"Your neck must hurt and what I’m about to do next will probably strain you, so I advise you to ’fall asleep’ now." He explained and Jane stared at the syringe. Was that the only way?

Well, there was no harm in taking anesthesia in this situation. Her condition wasn’t one to play too. Her neck hurt and she couldn’t even stretch it too much.

She sighed.

"At a time like this, I wonder, why didn’t we just leave all this to be done by a special task unit?" She murmured and to which he responded,

"They would definitely not get the job done as finely as I am doing now. They won’t be discreet enough and will definitely not get the file." He said and she eyed him. Who asked him to explain?

She injected the anesthesia in her arm and flinched a bit. Luckily, she didn’t need to find her vein to inject the syringe because her vision was not too great at the moment.

"Now what?" She asked and he smirked.

"Now..." His words were interrupted when another blast shook the building. He was barely able to stand still, as he had Jane in his arms but he made it till the rumble settled down a bit.

But it would seem that the building had already started collapsing as it kept shaking.

This caused him to snicker.

"No other choice, I see." He said and turned to check one of the rooms.

Jane had slowly started falling asleep. She couldn’t open her eyes long and could only wonder what Maxwell was looking for at a time like that.

’We’re running out of time. What is he up to?’ she wondered, flickering her lashes.l and gradually falling into the power of the anesthesia.

Maxwell was still looking for the window with Jane in his arms when, in one of the rooms, a window got shot.

He rushed over to that window and looked below. He smirked.

"I guess that’s our ticket to getting out of this mess." He and Jane slowly looked down the window.

Coupled with her drowsiness, looking down from such a height made her eyes spin and she felt sick. But past that, she noticed what was below them.

"That..." She couldn’t find her words but what was below them was none other than a huge bouncing castle.

Maxwell, set his foot on the window frame and said with a carefree smile, as if trying to reassure her but at the same time, make sure she was aware that he had everything under control,

"This might hurt a little." He said and the fourth explosive went off, causing the building to shake more violently than before.

All Jane could remember from there was the strong wind that followed Maxwell’s jump and the way his men hurried to get them out of there, as well as the loud and destructive noise coming from the collapsing building.

Other than that... She couldn’t remember anything else, till she woke up and found herself sitting in a hospital bed, staring out the window and at the dazzling sunset.

"Was that... A dream?"
