Chapter 241: You’re one to talk

"Was that... A dream?"

Jane wondered and instinctively reached her hand out to rub her neck, just to find it neatly patched and slightly aching.

"Ah." She exclaimed. That must’ve been the dressing for her neck that had been slit. "It was definitely not a dream."

She sighed and covered her face with both her palms. That experience... She did not want to experience it again. So dangerous. Only a minute more and they would’ve been buried in the rubbles of the fallen hospital.

So dangerous.

But was Maxwell alright? He carried her to jump, didn’t he? Well, he was sure to be alright. He was ’the’ Maxwell. A crazy and annoying psychopath who would give reason to all his dirty deeds.

She silently chuckled. Was it weird that she found his psychotic behavior hilarious, childish and maybe cute?

But she couldn’t help it. He was being so nice to her, smiling annoyingly and always trying to comfort her in the weirdest ways. Also, he was the one parading as her new older brother and soulmate so it shouldn’t be weird that she suddenly got attached to him and found his antics ’cute’.

"Oh? It seems someone’s in a good mood." She heard Maxwell’s voice and looked up, only to see him walk in with a caste on. Her eyes widened. When did he...? "Oh? Where did the smirk go? Don’t tell me you’re looking like that because of this annoying thing?" He said, referring to his caste.

"What happened?" She asked.

"Well, let’s just say someone was way heavier than I thought and when I jumped..." He paused and smirked. "This happened."

"So now it’s my fault." She frowned and threw her face away, looking displeased. "Who told you to carry me in the first place? I’m not going to tell you thank you even if you wait for it. You’re supposed to take care of yourself, even if you’re trying to play the hero. If you had been a little bit careful, then you..."

Her words were interrupted as Maxwell dropped his hand on her head but she refused to turn her head to look at him.

"I was going to say, ’you’re welcome’ but something tells me... Are you worried about me?" He asked but she still refused to look at him.

"Whatever happened to you, it’s all your fault." She said and he chuckled.

"Okay. It’s my fault. Can you look at me now?" He asked but she remained silent. "Hm, I should add ’crybaby’ to the personality section in your information." He said and she shot her eyes at him.

"Who said I’m crying?" She yelled, unknowing to her that tears were actually dripping down her cheeks and he said,

"I know what I saw. Will you still deny it?" He asked, gently stroking her hair.

"It’s your fault, you know that? I didn’t ask to be a part of this in the first place. I didn’t ask to feel weak in the middle of it and..."

"Yes, it’s definitely my fault." He said. "I was careless with that bastard and that’s why you got hurt, lost so much blood and feel weak in the middle."

"Good you know." She sniffed.

"But shouldn’t you be grateful that I didn’t abandon you in the middle? I’m not one to actually look back at a weak partner." He stroked her hair down to her fringe and she pumped her cheeks.

"Hmph, why would you abandon me? I’m your ’sister’ aren’t I?" She grinned mischievously and he tittered.

"I got myself one hell of a sister, didn’t I?"

She rolled her eyes.

"You’re one to talk. I’m the one who’s going to have to bear with all your crazy sides from now on." She said,

"I think we both finally agree on something." He returned her words, referring to her, who also went crazy at times and she giggled.

"Thank you, you annoying prick," She finally said, "For not abandoning me halfway."

"And thank you for not being too much of an asshole while I looked for a way to escape that collapsing building."

They both went silent, and as if just realizing what the other had said, burst out laughing.

Then, Jane went ahead to hug him.

"You’re welcome." She said and he stroked her hair.

"Right back at you."

Their brother-sister relationship seemed to resemble that of two siblings who had been at odds for a long time and were finally patching up. Crossing the bridge and burning it to avoid going back to their wrongs.

"So, Henry, was it? He died?" Jane asked, after their seemingly heartwarming exchange of words.

She was currently peeling an apple for Maxwell when clearly she was the one who needed the apple. But of course, since he was currently one handed, he couldn’t and so she had to do it.

"It would take a miracle for him to survive that." Maxwell said and crossed his legs on the chair he was sitting on. "But of course, miracles aren’t for despicable bastards like him."

"Hm." She nodded.

"But I did make sure to send the last of him, as well as a letter of my ’appreciation’ to his dearly beloved." Maxwell said, showcasing that evil grin of his and Jane knew it wasn’t something simple.

"Well, it was thanks to him that we were able to find the files quickly so I hope you sent it right." She said and handed him the plate of freshly cut apples in bunny shapes.

"Oh, I did."

Jane paused and looked out the window with a serious face. Serena... This time, they would get back at her for every pain, every hurt and every tear she had caused Alexa and her loved ones.

She didn’t hurt her directly but as far as Alexa was concerned, she was more than involved in this.

"Why the face? Are you thinking of killing someone?" Maxwell asked and she turned to him.

"Just one." She said and he nodded.

"I have a feeling I know who you’re talking about." He said. "Perhaps a bitch with the first letter ’s’ and the last ’a’?"

She grinned.

"Spot on."
