Chapter 234: At one point in my life, yes, it was

Jane fell asleep shortly after. She wasn’t supposed to sleep since she took in a lot of caffeinated drinks but she couldn’t help it as her body, soul and heart were all tired.

"How can you sleep just anywhere?" Maxwell asked as he watched her and then frowned. "It would seem that kind people are indeed destined to suffer. You’re far too lenient."

His eyes grew dark.

The desire to protect her suddenly grew and he got angry. She didn’t want him to touch that bastard? Then he could take it out on the lady.

He took out his phone and made a brief call. Two guys dressed normally walked into the cafe and approached them.

"You, carry her luggage." He pointed at one of them. And to the next, he said, "You, carry her to the hotel I’m staying in. It’s a suite so it can contain both of us."

They were surprised he was letting her stay in the suite with him but they dared not to question him.

These men were among his secret unit. They practically went with him everywhere but they weren’t acting as normal body guards because they could only act on his orders and unless he was dying, they were not to move from their positions.

After they left, he glanced at Jane’s phone in his hand. He wasn’t going to hurt that bastard... that was a lie.

As long as he was no longer going to be someone important in her life, he would do everything to make him regret his decision.

Jane woke up and found herself sleeping in a big bed. It wasn’t her bed, but it was comfortable.

"Where am I?" She muttered.

"Sleeping beauty wakes." She heard Maxwell’s voice and looked up to see him sitting in the chair right in front of her.

It was a little distance away but it did not hide the fact that he was sitting in front of her the whole time and watching her while she slept and that made her shudder.

Was he a creep?

"What are you doing?" She asked.

"Making sure you didn’t die in your sleep due to a broken heart." He said and got up from his chair, approaching her.

"Well, I’m alive and fine. Thank you." She said, her eyes following his steps.

He got in front of her, placed his hand on the bed and leaned his face close to hers.

"Am I crazy?" He suddenly asked her which confused her. Was he supposed to be asking her that question? She was a surgeon not a psychiatrist.

"I think you can answer that question yourself." She answered and used the other side of the bed to get down. ’What’s into him all of a sudden? My head is killing me.’

Like alcohol, drinking too much coffee could cause something similar to a hangover headache.

It must’ve also been because she was so stressed about what was going on.

"Do I come across as a person who enjoys seeing others in pain?" He asked yet another weird question and she paused.

She looked at him, what happened while she was asleep? She looked at his expression, he was seriously asking this question and she was moved to ask,

"What did you do while I was asleep?" She asked him but he remained silent and just shook his head.

"It’s nothing. I’m just thinking weird things again. Come on, let’s have dinner."

Though Maxwell brushed it off lightly like that, Jane could feel something had really happened and was disturbing him.

Well, since he said it was nothing, she would have to take it like that and not concern herself about him. She needed to worry about herself first.

She needed to get the rest of her things from Daniel’s place and then find a place to stay. Ugh, how exactly was she going to find a nice affordable place to stay? She could stay in a hotel for a few days but because of expenses, she couldn’t stay for too long.

"I hope you’re not thinking about what I said earlier." Maxwell said and she lifted her head from her food. "I said it was just nonsense I was spitting out."

"Tch, you’re getting ahead of yourself. Who has time to think of you? I’m thinking about my stuff. I have to get them back from Daniel’s place." She said,

"No need." Maxwell suddenly said and she paused.

"What do you mean? It’s my stuff not yours. It’s my decision to..."

He interrupted her by pointing at the ceiling and she followed his hand to see nothing at all.

She looked at him, he was smiling and she grew annoyed. Was he messing with her? But then he said,

"I already got them."

She blinked her eyes.

"You got them? You got my stuff?" He nodded. "How? No, when?"

The look of disbelief in her face, showed that she couldn’t trust his methods and though they were indeed questionable, he had no plan of telling her about it.

"When you were passed out like a log." He said and laughed. "We have a lot of things to do and you said you’d do something stupid if you saw his face so I saved you the trouble." He explained. "You shouldn’t see him till you know you’re ready and won’t do anything silly."

Jane was silent and speechless. Why was he caring so much about this?

"I won’t say thank you."

"You’re welcome." He accepted it anyway and she threw her face aside.

"You should look at the other when being spoken to." Maxwell pointed out but she wouldn’t and retaliated by saying,

"Why would I want to look at you? I would rather stare at the mirror." she shoved a spoonful of her rice in her mouth and shewed slowly.

"You know, you’re the only person, aside from my wife and my family, that I’ve had dinner with like this." He said and she peeled at him. "You should feel honored."

"As if. Go eat on the coach if you have a problem with me." She scoffed and continued eating.

He simply chuckled and then his face turned serious.

"Anyway, let’s forget about that and move on to a more serious topic. We’re acting out tomorrow." He said and that piqued Jane’s interest. "You’ll go to work as you always do, I’ll act like an intern and..." he paused, noticing her as she tried hard not to laugh. "What’s wrong?"

"Nothing." She said over her suppressed laughter but couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst out laughing. "You? An intern?"

"Do I look too brilliant to be an intern?" He asked. "Even the most famous doctors were interns at some point."

"Brilliant is an understatement. You look like you own a multimillion company. Who’s going to believe you’re an intern?" She laughed and he rubbed his chin while secretly gloating.

"I suppose that is true." He said. "Then what would you have me do? Should I pretend to be sick?"

"Please, yes. It would be a hundred times better if you pretended to be a patient in need of a personal consultant. Where did the idea of being an intern come from? Or is it your secret wish to become a doctor?" She carefreely asked but he took it serious and answered,

"At one point in my life, yes, it was."

Jane paused her laughter and looked at the little sad smile on his face. He also had this sort of expression, huh?

What was the story behind this?

"Well, um, continue." She probed him.

"Okay, once we’re in. You’ll lead me to where the top files are kept."

"That would be the first floor above." She said and he nodded.

"Of course it’s going to need the ID access of a worker in the hospital so then I’ll take your ID with me."

"Ooh, I feel like I’ve become a spy all of a sudden." She said with a tinge of excitement in her voice.

"For tomorrow, you’ll be." He said, amused by her show of childish excitement.

He watched her. This side of her... he liked it too and wanted to protect it for reasons he didn’t understand.

There was this strong connection but these weren’t romantic feelings that a man had for a woman, rather, it was different.

He never got to live with his siblings happily and he never had a younger tone either so this feeling... maybe this was how he would’ve felt if he had a sister he would want to protect.

What was important was keeping that smile on her face.

"Let’s call it a night." Maxwell said as he got up. But she sat still and he could tell she was thinking. Probably about that bastard who cheated.

He couldn’t help but get furious at the thought of Daniel. Though she said she didn’t blame him, he did. He went too far by cheating all the time they were dating.

Then, he remembered what he did after Jane got sent to the hotel. His eyes turned dark.

To think he let Daniel go just because of the words he heard and the realization he got.

He should’ve gone ahead and chopped one of his fingers off at least, even if he wasn’t going to beg for mercy.
