Chapter 235: So that’s how it is

Maxwell went to settle scores with Daniel and even made it clear he was doing it to get back at the hurt he caused Jane.

And instead of Daniel to get terrified by the scary man who was about to torture him and make his life hell, he bowed his head obediently and was ready to receive whatever punishment that was going to be bestowed on him.

He didn’t even ask Maxwell what his relationship with Jane was. It was like he knew her so well that he didn’t need to suspect her relationship with this man.

According to him... He deserved far worse because he knew how pitiful it was when Jane gets hurt to the point of tears.

He understood this and that was why it killed him more that he hurt her than the fact that they broke up after being together for so long.

"Please, if you meet her again. Tell her I would wish for no other one in my life but her. Yet, I am not worthy of saying those words to her on my own and I will never look her in the eyes either. But I’m glad that she has people like you who look after her to this extent."

He smiled and dropped his hands in surrender and Maxwell’s fists trembled.

He knew all this yet he cheated for so long? Bastard! And what was with that smile? Was this a joking matter to him?

He threw a punch at him but Daniel did not make a noise of objection and just took it as it came.

But Maxwell wasn’t satisfied. He wanted to hear him cry, beg for mercy, hear him scream in pain and even cuss at him.

It was at that moment he realized he indeed had a problem, warranting the question he asked Jane as soon as she woke up.

"Hah." He sighed and dropped his hand on head, gently ruffling her hair. "Try to get some sleep."

"I’ll stay up for a while longer." She said and he nodded, taking his hand off her head.

He went to his own room and looked through some files for a while, hoping that by the time he was done, she would’ve gone to bed already.

A few hours later, he was done and got up from his chair.

He got to the living room and found her sitting while hugging her knees in front of the big screen TV.

She had turned off the lights so he couldn’t see what she was doing but when he got closer and turned on the lights, he found a bucket of ice cream next to her and her eyes were teary.

There were dried streaks of tears down her cheeks and it was clear that she cried... A lot. Was she a kid?

"Hey." He called but she didn’t respond, just staring at the blank screen in front of her.

He tapped her shoulder and she looked up.

"Oh, you’re here?" She said and dropped her legs. "Want some ice cream?" She offered, shaking the nearly finished ice cream.

Maxwell looked at the ice cream and then her smile which looked normal. But it wasn’t normal. It was a mask.

A mask she put on just to hide the sadness in her heart.

She looked like she was fine with it all the while but she was deeply hurt by it. She was broken.

He took the ice cream from her and sat next to her.

"What’s with you? If you want to have some ice cream and watch a movie, you should at least put on the TV." He said and picked up the remote to put on the TV.

Jane looked at him for a while. She thought he would ask but he didn’t and she smiled.

"There wasn’t any good show on." She said, "So I left it off."

"Let’s find a good show. It’s midnight so there must be some interesting show by now." He said and started scrolling through the channels.

"By the way, did you order them not to give me coffee?" She asked with pouted lips like a kid and Maxwell turned to her. Seeing her pumping her cheeks was hilarious and he laughed.

She was surprised that he laughed.

"I know you were going to order some. So I told them to tell you it wasn’t available in case you asked." He explained. "So you got ice cream instead, huh? It’s a better choice. If you have too much caffeine again today, you may not be able to sleep and stay up thinking of God knows what."

"That’s..." she looked away. He was right and it was so considerate of him.

Why was he being so considerate? Did he pity her? In any case, she was glad.

"Thank you." She muttered and simply turned to stare at the ongoing show on the TV.

Maxwell knew better to act like he didn’t notice anything than ask questions because compared to her troubled tears, he would rather see her smile like a goof ball.

He placed his hand on her head again and said,

"If you want to talk about it, I’m all ears." He said and she peeked at him.

"When did we become the best of friends?" She asked and he tilted his head to the side a bit while averting his eyes.

He was thinking about it? When did they grow so close?

It was always him pestering her.

"We didn’t become the best of friends." He said and smiled at her. "I’d like to think we were made for each other. Like, soulmates." He said this with a serious face but then replaced it with a goofy smile and said, "Soulmate sounds too serious so instead of that, I’ll take it that I’m taking care of my younger sister."

Jane was silent for a while, staring into his eyes. The soulmate indeed sounded a bit too serious but then she snapped and slapped his hand off her head.

"As if! I’m probably older than you so you’re the younger one here."

"Oh? And how are you older than me?" He asked, drawing closer to her. "Jane Abelard. Born February 2nd. Zodiac sign, Aquarius. Age, 27 and childish with anger issues. A strange mix but I think I know you very well."

Jane looked at him stunned. He knew all that about her? Thinking about it, it was annoying

"And you?" She asked. "How old are you?"

"Me? I’m 30." He answered with a big smile and she burst out laughing.

"30?"

"What? Is it a big number?"

"You’re thirty, yet your character is next to that of a kindergartner." She scoffed. "You’re so childish. You should start acting your age, don’t you think?"

"So that’s how it is. Well, acting my age is such a hassle." He said and got up. "Now, we really need to sleep if we want to carry out the operation tomorrow."

"What? Are you scared you’ll sleep in from staying awake a little too late?" she dared with a grin and he sat right back down.

"I wasn’t even thinking about myself but since Miss ’noble strength’ wants to stay up all night, who am I to refuse?"

"What are you... ? How did you know the meaning of my last name?" She asked and he smirked.

"I got that much information, wouldn’t it be weird if I didn’t know the meaning of your last name?"

His smirk said a lot and she turned away with a scoff. He was so childish. She ended up laughing. To think he was that old but he was acting like that all along.

Not that 30 was an old age, she just never realized it.

"So, did you mean it?" She suddenly asked and he shifted his gaze from the TV to her. "When you said you see me as a younger sister, did you mean it?"

"I don’t say things I don’t mean." Maxwell said. "And I assure you, I have never gone this far for someone I don’t care about. In my eyes, people are fucking pests who need to be squashed in order to avoid them from disturbing me and my time with the people I care about."

"Wow, such words." She said with glazed eyes and nodded in understanding. But then she realized what he had said and asked, "You... Care about me?"

He lightly knocked her forehead and said,

"Put your ear down when someone’s talking to you. I don’t like repeating myself."

She ended up chuckling.

"Wow, what a wonderful big brother you are."

He was stunned to hear her say that but then he smiled. Once again, he placed his hand on her head and smiled warmly.

"You have a long way to go."

"What? What long way?" She asked but before he could say anything, his phone rang.

They both stayed silent and while she wondered who would be calling so dead into the night, he picked it up and answered,

"Did you get it?" He asked and the other party responded. He nodded.

Jane watched as he conversed with the person on the other line and she could tell it was one of his people seeing how serious he was.

Once he was down with the call, he looked at her and said,

"If you’re not going to sleep now, you really won’t be able to wake up early in the morning." He said and she nodded.

"What about you? Are you going to bed now?" She asked and she nodded.

But then, his phone rang again. It was a different ringing tone and his face immediately lit up like a disco ball. He didn’t waste even a second to answer,

"Hello, wifey!"
