I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 236: Can’t you see I’m in pain?
"Hello, wifey!"
Of course, Paige. Who else would make Maxwell have such sparkles in his eyes?
Jane shook her head at his level of timidity as he actively listened to his wife.
’I’ll just go to bed now.’ she thought to herself and got up but out of the expected, he caught her hand and said,
"Don’t think too much about it." It was a simple word of concern and she nodded.
"Who are you talking to?" Paige asked, through the phone, surprised that he would have someone over so late at night.
"My soulmate." Maxwell timidly answered with a cheerful smile that both Paige and Jane were stunned out of their heads.
"Your... soulmate?" Paige asked, and Jane felt like grabbing his neck.
"Why would you say that? You’re going to cause a misunderstanding." She whispered to him. "Weren’t he the one who said the word soulmate felt too profound?" and Maxwell tilted his head, remembering his own words and said,
"Then, my younger sister?" He rephrased but she shook her head.
Why did he have to say such a thing at all? Now he was going to make Paige misunderstand that he was spending the night with some lady and was lying about it.
"Max." Paige called. "Who are you talking to?"
Her tone sounded serious but Maxwell never thought she would misunderstand. Anyway, he decided to just call her name.
"It’s Jane." He answered and Jane palmed her face.
Not only did his words sound like an excuse, now, he was calling out the name of the supposedly ’other woman’.
This guy was going to doom his relationship and he didn’t even know it.
Paige went silent and the moment she opened her lips to speak, she closed them back again. She shouldn’t think too much about it. There was probably a reasonable reason why they were together at such an hour.
But what was it about her being his soulmate and younger sister? Was he always the type to goof around with others?
Jane shook her head. Her relationship just ended in shambles. She would hate it if his relationship started crumbling because of a big misunderstanding such as this.
"Can I speak to her?" She asked and a clueless Maxwell handed her the phone. "Hey, good morning. No wait, it should be afternoon over there." She laughed awkwardly.
"Jane, what’s going on?" Paige asked, hoping to get a sincere answer from her. "What are you doing with my husband so late at night and why aren’t you with your fiance?"
Jane pursed her lips and gave out a breath to ease herself. She was so straightforward.
"We broke up." She said, surprising Paige. "Well, things happened today and it was really hectic, haha. I caught him cheating so I left right away and Maxwell found me in the coffee shop I was holed up in. I didn’t have a place to stay so we’re sharing his suite... for now."
Jane wished really hard that Paige would not perceive her words as an excuse. And to her surprise, Paige asked with a caring voice,
"Are you okay?"
Jane pursed her lips and covered her mouth. Those words, she really didn’t want to be asked that again and this time, she was feeling the gravity of her separation even more.
She nodded her head, hoping she could say she was fine but the words wouldn’t come out. She sobbed.
Maxwell took the phone back from her. He thought Paige had already cut the call since he didn’t hear anything from her end any longer. (The phone is on loud speaker)
"To think I put in so much effort to help you out." He said to her, "It’s hard but can’t you just man up and give that bastard your middle finger?"
"Is that supposed to make me feel any better? Can’t you see I’m in pain?" She asked him, but his aim wasn’t to console her broken heart. It was to divert her attention from the pain.
"What? You want to take it out on me? I told you to let me deal with that bastard for you but you were going soft on him." He said, as if he hadn’t already tried to take action but gave up halfway.
"Shut up. Go take it out on that bitch instead. She’s the one who clung on to him for so long." She yelled at him and they got into a spat fight.
Once they were done, they were both reaching out heavily while facing one another with rising and falling shoulders.
Then, it all went silent.
"When did you two grow close?" Paige’s voice from over the phone broke the silence and their eyes widened.
Maxwell looked at Jane in disbelief. He thought she had ended the call already, that was why he talked like that. He wouldn’t have said so much if he knew Paige was still on the line.
"Honey, it’s not what you think. She needs to be talked some sense." He said and she sighed.
"I think I heard enough to know who needs to be talked some sense." She said, "And to think one of you is thirty years old. Both of you are so childish." She said and chuckled.
"Wifey." He silently sobbed.
"Jane." Paige called.
"Yes, ma’am?"
"Don’t mind anything he says, okay? I’m surprised you were able to get along with him but I’m glad you did. If he bullies you, let me know. I’ll give him an earful once he gets back home." She said and Maxwell whined,
"Honey, you’re supposed to be on my side."
"I’ll be on your side when I know you’re right. Jane’s passing through a tough time so you should go easy on her."
"Alright." He answered, though he originally planned to be good to her.
Once again, they all fell silent before Paige spoke again.
"I’m sure it’s late over there. You two get some sleep."
Jane was honestly surprised that Paige had no problem with her husband staying in the same suite with another woman.
Well, she heard the ruckus so she must’ve been convinced that there was no hidden quota in their relationship.
’Their level of trust must be at its max.’
That was what she thought but honestly, Paige was uneasy.
