Chapter 192: Little Maxwell

Maxwell was silent, stunned at her words. Then, he pursed his lips awkwardly and rubbed the back of his neck. That was very unexpected. She didn’t change one bit when it came to surprising him.

"Maxwell," Paige called as she took a step towards him. "...why did you bring me here?"

"Do you know where ’here’ is?" He asked and she looked around. It was an old abandoned playground. She shook her head.

Maxwell turned around and pointed at a curved and enclosed slide. There was a space beneath it that grownups couldn’t detect easily so the children used to use it as a hiding place.

"There." He said and she followed his hand, still not getting it. He smiled brightly at her and said, "That was where we met for the first time."

Paige was speechless. This playground... This abandoned playground was where they met for the first time? But what was she doing there to begin with?

"You know," he approached her. "... It was thanks to you that I could make it past that night without dying." He swiped her hair back. "You were a rebellious little thing back then and it seems you still are." He laughed.

Paige turned aside and took out her phone to call her guards.

"Yes, I’m fine." She said, "It was a prank so you don’t have to worry about my safety." She added but the other side seemed insecure. "Don’t worry, I’ll leave my phone on so you can come to me if you feel I’m taking too long." She said and finally cut the call.

She turned to Maxwell and said,

"Alright. Let’s start."

"What?"

"The story. We have a lot to talk about, remember?" She said and pointed at his chest. "You promised to not stay too long but you’re late. Awfully late."

"Were you waiting for me?" He asked her and she shook her head.

"I didn’t exactly wait for you but I didn’t forget you either." She said and approached the bench.

She watched him as he shook his head and approached her. He sat next to her and she said,

"From the top, how did we meet?"

Maxwell readily told her the tale of a little boy.

There was this little boy who had two older brothers. One of them died a week ago and the other looked extremely weak. It was clear he wouldn’t have long to live so a lot of people tried to curry favor with the four years old boy.

It was terrifying. All their fake smiles, their assessing eyes and their cunning words. He was scared of it all so he didn’t like social gatherings.

Then one day, he got kidnapped. Seeing as he would be the sole heir to all the properties and the company with no questions, they knew they would be able to get a fortune if they kidnapped him and asked for a ransom.

They managed to carry him while he was asleep after bribing one of the maids to drug his night milk.

Little Maxwell woke up in a car. There was no one inside and it was dark. Then, he heard a few voices outside. They were talking about how they were going to treat the kid.

"Let’s just take a few pictures and videos of him and get rid of him." One of them said,

"I think that’s good. It would be such a hassle carrying a kid around."

"Let’s just fool them into thinking the kid is alive and then when we get the cash, we’ll make a run for it."

Maxwell immediately understood his circumstances and grew scared but he knew if he didn’t find a way to run away while they were distracted then he would get taken by them and even killed.

Slowly, he opened the door and quietly ran away from the car, but it didn’t take long before he started hearing the men’s voices. They sounded mad and alarmed.

Little Maxwell ran with his little feet, hoping to get away from them.

The men were hot on his tail and he was scared. His legs trembled so much that he felt he would fall any moment but he couldn’t stop running. If he did, he would die.

He stumbled on this playground and while looking back to see if they were still behind him, he stumbled on a girl.

"Ouch." He exclaimed as he fell on his butt.

The girl, little Paige at the time, stood taller than him while looking down at the little boy who was shaking seriously.

"Are you okay?" She asked and squatted to look at his face. "You’re shaking. What’s the matter?"

"Where is he?" She suddenly heard some men yelling. She looked at the little boy and understood what was going on.

"Come on, let’s hide." He pulled him by the hand and went to hide under the swing.

Little Maxwell kept shaking and Paige watched him. What could she do to calm him down? Then, she came up with an idea. It was the way her aunt always comforted her when she was scared of the thunder sounds.

Paige hugged him and patted his back, whispering to his ear very lowly so they wouldn’t hear her.

"Don’t be scared. You’re not alone." She said to him and kissed his head, "I’m right here and I won’t let any bad guys have you. I’ll keep you safe in my arms and not let go."

It seemed to work fine and before Paige knew it, Maxwell had fallen asleep.

’Wow, he sleeps so well even when it’s dangerous outside.’ She thought with a little smile. ’It only shows he trusts me. He’s cute.’

She equally fell asleep and woke up about five hours later. She checked her little wrist watch and saw it was almost sunrise.

"Hey, kid." She called and he opened his eyes. He rubbed them cutely and she smiled. "The bad guys are gone so you don’t have to worry anymore." She said and he looked outside.

"Are they?" He asked to confirm and she nodded. His eyes grew teary and he cried.

"There, there. No need to cry. Big sis will take care of you." She said to him and he sniffed.

"Thank you. I... I’ll pay you back. I will." He said with so much confidence that she started laughing.

"How do you want to pay me back when all you are is a little cry baby?" She snickered and he blushed in embarrassment.

"I... I’ll pay you back in the future." She said, "I will be a strong and tall guy and I will pay you back."

"Really?" She asked with a little grin. "Then, I won’t go easy on you when we’re older. I could even make you be my servant, would you still do it?" She asked and Maxwell nodded, without even thinking it through.

"I will. You... You’re my savior. My life... it’s yours."

"Wow, look at this little talker. Where did you learn that from? Your older brother perhaps?" She teased, unknowing to her that that would only make him cry more. "Hey, why are you crying again?"

"I’m sorry." He apologized while trying to wipe his eyes with his sleeves.

Paige looked at him with mixed feelings. He looked like he was really hurt. After all, who was this little boy?

"I’m sorry so don’t cry anymore." Paige said to him and he nodded, sniffing as he tried to stop his tears. "By the way, my name is Paige. I’m from the Winston family."

"I am Maxwell." He simply said.

"Maxwell, you’re too weak to pay me back now so I’ll till you’re older. Then, you can pay me back." She said to him and raised her pinky finger. "Let’s make a promise. Will you make a promise with me?"

"Yes, I will." He raised his pinky.

Paige, after hearing this, felt the little girl in the tale couldn’t have been her. Maxwell explained her to be a free spirited girl who had no problem saying what was in her mind.

And he... He was such a crybaby. Though it was understandable, given his situation and circumstances.

"What changed you?" Maxwell suddenly asked and she lowered her head. If it was at a time when she still had her precious Aunt then she knew exactly what changed her and why she could not remember him.

"My favorite Aunt died." She said, a bit sadly. "And then when I was in highschool, my parents died in a car accident. It wouldn’t be a surprise if I actually became an ice queen but I left it all behind me."

"Yet you couldn’t bring yourself so freely to show your emotions like you used to." Maxwell explained and nodded. "I understand."

"What took you so long?" Paige asked him once more and he looked at her, staring deep into her eyes. Those eyes still sparkled no matter how long it took.

She was a very pretty lady. A lady he wanted to be with, that is if she’d let him.

"My mother died." He answered and the shock showed in her eyes. "I was not very close to her but our relationship wasn’t strained either. I always knew it would come to that but it was still shocking. I stayed indoors for a year because I couldn’t get over it. It brought back memories I didn’t want to remember. Awful memories."

Maxwell clenched his fists. He didn’t say that to earn her sympathy or anything like that and he hoped she wouldn’t look at him with those sympathetic eyes he had seen for too long.

"Look at us two peas in a pod." Paige suddenly said. "We both lost important people, so I guess we have something alike." He looked up at her and saw her smiling.

Then, he started laughing. She didn’t pity him. She didn’t look at him with sympathetic eyes.
