Chapter 193: Why she ran from home

They both looked away from the other for a while and stayed silent, as if searching for what to say before Paige finally broke the silence.

"Can I ask you something?" She asked and he nodded. "What brought you out of your despair?" Paige asked him. He took a moment before answering.

"Well, I woke up one morning and said to myself, ’I can’t keep wasting my life like this. I have a promise to fulfill’. And that’s all it took to get me out." He said with a bright smile. "So, now, can I tell you what the promises were?" He asked her, more excited than she would’ve imagined.

Paige wondered, what were the promises about? Though she was ready to hear it, she couldn’t stop herself from thinking about it.

"What was the first promise?" She asked.

**************

While the two children had their pinky fingers up, the sun started rising and from that angle, its rays shone on Paige’s eyes.

That was the first time Maxwell saw such beautiful eyes in the sunrise and he marveled.

"I promise, that when we’re older, I will fulfill the first desire you tell me." He said and she laughed.

"My first desire? What if I say it on a whim?" She asked him.

"I’ll take it seriously." He said, looking seriously at her.

"Alright." They both smiled happily. "I better keep that in mind and make good use of my ’wish’." She said and giggled.

"By the way, why were you here out in the middle of the night?" Maxwell asked her and her mood slowly fell.

"Well, my grandfather seemed to have argued with my aunt. My aunt doesn’t want to get married to the man he picked so he got mad." She said and hugged her knees. "I got scared and ran out with a note that said, ’I will only come home if Aunt is happy’." She said and smiled, shining her teeth.

"Wow, that’s so bold of you." He said, admiring her courage.

"In life, you’ve got to learn how to make your own decisions." She said, with her eyes closed and her finger in the air like a lady of justice. "In the future, I will decide who I want to get married to."

"And what if your grandfather picks out someone for you?" He asked and her face fell. She sadly looked away.

"I’ll run away." She said, "I will run away and never come back."

"Don’t." Maxwell held her hands. "I... " his face flushed as he summoned courage to say, "I will marry you. In the future, after the first promise is fulfilled, I will marry you. I promise I’ll marry you."

Paige looked at him for a while and then laughed.

"You want to marry me?" She asked and he nodded. "What if I don’t want to marry you?" She asked him.

"Why not?"

"I might not like what you look like in the future." Paige said, taking him aback. "You’re not even as tall as me now." she giggled.

"Well I... I’ll be tall. I’ll be taller than you later and I’ll be handsome, rich and no more a cry baby. Trust me." He ranted and she laughed. At the end, she patted his head.

"Alright, I’ll take you up on that. If you manage to be all of that, I will marry you." She said and he blushed.

"I promise, I’ll be all of that and then I’ll marry you. I won’t let anyone bully you into marrying someone you don’t like." He said so confidently that she laughed again.

"Alright." They made the pinky promise and just then, guards appeared and started searching for Paige.

"Young mistress, are you here?" She heard them yell and knew she had finally been tracked.

"Are they looking for you?" Maxwell asked and she nodded.

"But I won’t go out till I hear my aunt’s voice." She said, relaxing her back.

And then, she heard her aunt’s voice.

"Paige." Her eyes widened and she crawled out.

"Aunty?" She saw her aunt and ran to hug her.

Her aunt, Emily, a beautiful lady with black wavy hair and eyes that sparkled like Paige’s.

"Why did you run off like that? Don’t you know it’s dangerous?" She asked her but Paige was too busy snuggling her to care. She spotted the kid coming out from under the swing. "Um? Who’s that?"

Paige turned her head.

"Oh, that’s Maxwell. There were some bad guys after him and I saved him." She said and Maxwell bowed his head.

"H-Hello." He greeted her.

"Then I guess we’ll have to get him back to his family." Emily said and signaled one for the guards to carry him. "Let’s go. We’ll drop him first and then take you to your parents. They’re worried."

Paige pouted her lips.

"They don’t care about me as much as Autny does." She said,

"And Skylar?" Emily asked. "He was crying the whole night."

"Haha, he’s a cry baby like Maxwell." Paige said and laughed. She looked at Maxwell and smiled at him. "You’ll be home soon."

Maxwell was taken home and his family were overjoyed. They were so relieved that nothing happened to their son, especially Maxwell’s mother.

It seemed she would’ve gone mad if she were to lose Maxwell as well as her first child and then there was the high possibility of her second child dying soon.

She cried in front of Emily and Paige watched from the car. She met eyes with Maxwell and they both waved at each other.

That was goodbye. They wouldn’t be able to see each other since their houses were so far apart and they went to different schools.

Paige massaged her nose bridge. So that’s what the promise was all about and why he took it so seriously.

She never would’ve imagined.

"And that’s why you wanted to watch the sun rise with me." Sbe muttered.

Maxwell took her hand and she looked up.

"I made a promise, and I’m here to fulfill it." He said and stood up, helping her get on her feet. "I’m taller than you, I’m rich, I’m handsome and not a crybaby anymore. Doesn’t this mean you will agree to marry me?"
