Chapter 191: The talk on marriage

Paige found out that Maxwell was the only child of his family after his two older siblings died young, he was from her country, his family ranked number five in the list of influential and wealthy families whereas hers ranked number one.

In the end, she concluded that that was the reason behind his half hazard madness.

Really, who in their right mind would go to such lengths just to follow through with a promise the other party doesn’t even remember? Who?

It was an obsession of some sort.

Maxwell was studying business administration just like her but he was a year younger than her in his class so they never had their classes together.

In any case, it was already rare that she never crossed paths with him in school.

Two years went by and Paige got into her final year. Maxwell did not approach her after that prom event and she did not look for him either.

She would’ve likely deleted him from her life if he hadn’t shown up in front of her during their graduation ceremony. He wore his usual biker outfit and held his helmet over his right hand.

They stood across each other like two museum pieces till one decided to approach the other and surprisingly, it was Paige.

"So I guess this is goodbye?" She asked and he nodded.

"I think I’m going to be bored with you not being around."

"Was I a simply fun piece to you then?" She asked him. "Did you really derive joy from doing all that in my name? Or was it displeasing since it had to do with a promise our younger selves made?"

"It was never displeasing." Maxwell said. "If anything, it was rather thrilling."

Paige watched him smile. He was sincere but she couldn’t get past that sinister vibe he gave her.

"I understand." She said and bowed her head a bit.

This guy, she saw him only once in a blue moon and thanks to that, she never really grew attached to him but she couldn’t deny that she would think of him either.

"Paige." Skylar called from behind and she turned to look at him. He was waving and signaling her to go over to him.

"I guess this is goodbye." She said and turned to look at him. "Whatever I said in the past that made you do all this, I am very eager to know but since you will not say it, I have no choice but to keep my eagerness to myself. From here on, we will likely never see each other but..." she shrugged her shoulders. "It’s a small world, we will likely run into each other someday."

Maxwell nodded and stepped towards her, whispering to her hearing alone.

"Don’t worry, we will meet sooner than you think."

He turned around but this time, she didn’t let him walk away and leave her staring like he always did so she grabbed his arm.

"Hm?"

"Walk me to my car." She requested and without hesitation, he accepted and walked her to her car.

Skylar looked at Maxwell wondering who he was.

"Maxwell," Paige called and Skylar’s eyes widened. That was ’the’ Maxwell? How did they get acquainted?

Paige looked up at him before entering her car and added,

"Since you plan to meet up again in the future, don’t dilly-dally and keep me waiting because..." She said and grinned. "...we have a lot to talk about."

Hearing her say this, Maxwell laughed and grinned.

"Of course. It’d be so ungentlemanly for me to keep a lady waiting." He took her hand in his gloved ones and moved it to his lips. "After all, I am yet to fulfill the next part of that promise." He kissed her hand and smiled.

Paige smiled, her cheeks tainting with a light shade of pink. She got inside the car and Maxwell took steps back.

Skylar eyed him before getting inside the car.

Paige watched him as their car made its way out of there. Maxwell, would they really see each other again in the future? And what other part of the promise was there?

She didn’t even know the first part fully yet now she had to worry about the second part. Whatever it entailed, she was looking forward to it.

She just hoped it didn’t have to do with any embarrassing thing.

He said they met when they were younger... When was that exactly?

A year passed, Paige expected Maxwell to be done with his school then but there was no word from him. Another year passed and still no sign of him.

It wasn’t like she kept her entire hopes up but she was curious to see how this all ends.

She worked in her grandfather’s company. One of the branches, along with Skylar.

There was an endless workload, events, meetings to grow their own personal connection and charity events.

She never really appreciated that she was born with a golden spoon in her mouth. What she wanted to be in the world was something she did with her own powers. She wanted to be her own person.

Year after year, she lived the life her grandfather wanted. The life she, as the grandchild of the Winstons, was expected to live but then she rebelled.

While she worked in her grandfather’s company, she was also taking private classes just to become a psychologist. It wasn’t just so she could have her own standing in her life but because of Maxwell.

She didn’t know how it started but she found herself pitying Maxwell’s half hazard madness. She didn’t even know him fully well to know if he really did have such mental illness but she went ahead to be a psychologist anyway.

She graduated with that certificate and slowly started neglecting the post her grandfather gave her just so she could experiment her knowledge in a broader way.

She had patients with different emotional traumas, met with various doctors to discuss theory and then after two years, returned to her grandfather’s just to get welcomed with the topic of marriage.

’Let me be.’ She complained within herself.

Marriage. She had never given it a thought and was still not planning to give it a thought.

She was well over 29 years old and it was not advisable for a lady to be single at thirty. She has never even dated so it was more alarming and that was why they were pressuring her.

The pressure kept increasing. Her brother was equally not married so it made her single life even more pronounced but unlike her, her brother was a ’man’ and he already went around speed dating and having one night stands, using up all his youth, as they would call it.

She sighed and laid her head on her desk. Marriage. Who would be her other half for the rest of her life?

She wanted them to be kind, respectable, smart and also... handsome.

A few days later, while on her way to work, her car seemed to have gotten into a little accident.

"What’s going on?" She asked. Her driver and guard got down from the car to see who they had hit.

It was a bike man and he seemed to have fallen unconscious.

While Paige waited for them to report back to her, some other bike man wearing a helmet got into the driver’s seat and without wasting time, started the car and drove away.

Paige was beyond shocked. Was she actually getting kidnapped? At this age and time?

"Hey, stop this car this instant." She yelled at him but he remained silent.

Paige took out her phone and said,

"If you don’t stop this car right now, I’m going to have to call the cops." She threatened but he still didn’t stop or say a word.

She pursed her lips. She didn’t call the police because she was sure her guards were already on their tail thanks to the tracker on her phone but then again, she didn’t appreciate being treated like this.

The car finally stopped and the bike man got down.

Paige bit her lip and watched as he opened her door, stretching a hand out to her.

Wait, this seemed a bit odd. She moved her head to look outside the car and raised her head to see who it was. He was wearing this biker outfit and a helmet on. It reminded her of a certain someone.

No way, it couldn’t be him, right?

She took his gloved hand out of the car while still staring at his getup.

"You," he began. "...are you serious?" She suddenly asked and it took the biker back for a moment before he started laughing. "This isn’t funny. I know who you are. Maxwell, why go to such lengths?" She asked him.

The biker was silent for a while and then his lips curled. He took off his helmet and revealed his sunshine smile. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

"Nothing ever gets past you, do they?"

Paige stared at Maxwell’s face. He had matured a bit after their last meeting. He was always taller than her but she didn’t expect him to get even taller.

She was also rather tall for a lady but this was different. It was not fair that he would be this tall. After all, she was older. It was only by a year or two but she was still older.

"What are you thinking of so hard?" He asked, nudging her with his helmet.

"You." She answered honestly. "I was thinking about you."
