Chapter 141: Are you sure you’re talking about ’my’ Rachael?

That Monday, Alexa prepared Rachael for school. The fire incident had been cleared and so the children could return.

Usually, she let Rachael go by bus but since she had no morning appointments, she decided to drive her there.

Rachael was usually excited about going to school but this time, while driving her over, she didn’t say a single word and kept her gaze outside the window.

This distant look of hers got Alexa worried.

"Rachael?" She called and Rachael looked away from the window.

"Yes, mummy?"

"Aren’t you excited to return back to school?" She asked but Rachael took a minute to respond.

As if ready to read the lines out of a script, Rachael’s lips curled up in a smile and she said,

"Of course, mummy. Why wouldn’t I be excited? I’m going back to school."

Alexa wanted to be reassured by the answer she got but she couldn’t be too sure. Rachael was too good of an actress to be easily believed.

’Maybe I’ll see the teacher for a minute and then leave.’ She thought to herself and looked at Rachael over the rearview mirror. Once again, her gaze was outside the window.

After getting to the school, Rachael waved her hand and started heading in in a hurry. It was as if she didn’t want her mother to go in and take a look. She wanted her to leave as soon as possible and Alexa caught on to that.

’Something definitely happened.’

She went back to her car, waited for about five minutes and then got out. By this time, Rachael would’ve been fooled.

"Um, excuse me." Alexa called to one of the teachers ushering the children in with all enthusiasm.

"Yes? What can I do for you, ma’am?"

"Well, I’m Rachael’s mother." She said and they nodded, knowing she was telling the truth after seeing her drop Rachael off. "I would like to speak to the teacher in charge of her class. Would that be possible?"

"Of course. Come, I’ll show you the way."

Alexa met with Rachael’s teacher who did not hold back in complementing both Alexa and Rachael.

"Oh, now I know why little Rachael is so beautiful. She takes after her mother so much." Luna, the teacher said and Alexa smiled.

"Thank you."

"You know, Rachael is a really good girl. She’s well behaved and hasn’t done anything to hurt anyone since that time. I’m sure you talked to her. She’s been so good." Luna explained and Alexa nodded, feeling proud of her daughter who had so many different personalities in different places.

But then, she realized something in the teacher’s words.

"Wait, you said she hasn’t hurt anyone since ’that time’? What did you mean by that?"

"Oh my, did you forget? Little Rachael got into a fight with her mates and bit one of them in the arm." Luna explained and Alexa’s eyes widened. "She’s always been so well behaved and when I asked why she did that, she refused to say anything."

Alexa was left in disbelief. Rachael bit someone? Her Rachael? That was impossible. What did that person do for Rachael to lose her temper like that?

"Are you sure you’re talking about ’my’ Rachael?" She asked to be certain and the teacher looked at her strangely.

"Weren’t you the one who came to pick her up? Serena, was it? I didn’t see you that day but I heard from my co teacher that your name was Serena."

Alexa was confused. What exactly happened? What was going on? Rachael would never hurt a fly. And Serena? When did that happen? Why did she not tell her about it?

"How long ago was that?" She asked, just to confirm her suspicions and Luna thought back.

"I’d date it back to around seven months ago." She said and Alexa almost lost her footing as she staggered.

Seven months. It was the same time when Rachael started acting weirdly, inclining her thoughts and acting considerate so as not to be a burden.

Was this what happened?

Was this the incident that took place before Serena said ’words’ to her daughter? Was she trying to caution her? Caution her daughter? What was the meaning of that?

No, this was not time to dwell in her own thoughts. She needed to hear the whole thing from Rachael.

"Please, I’ll need to take Rachael home right now." Alexa said and a confused Luna imagined something serious was going on so she took Alexa to the classroom.

"I don’t know what’s going on but you shouldn’t scold Rachael too much." Luna said as they walked towards the classroom. "She’s been a really well behaved girl."

"I wouldn’t." Alexa said, clenching her fists.

As soon as they got to the classroom, through the see-through door, Alexa could see a couple of kids laughing with Rachael. No, they were laughing ’at’ Rachael.

Rachael was seated calmly while drawing on cardboard with a red crayon but they wouldn’t stop pestering her.

"What’s going on there?" She asked Luna who smiled and said,

"They’re just having fun. Kids love to tease each other." Though she said this, Alexa wasn’t sure. She couldn’t see Rachael’s face but only looking at her slouched back, she could tell that something was wrong.

"Hey, fatherless girl, I heard your mom dropped you off today." One of the kids said and Alexa’s eyes widened. What did she just hear?

"Hey, you shouldn’t call her that? The teachers told us not to." another boy said.

"No, the teachers told us not to call her a bastard so I’m calling her ’fatherless’ child. This one is far more direct, hehe."

The boy said and the rest of the kids laughed.

They were laughing? Was that a joke?

Alexa turned angrily at Luna.

"Do you call that having fun? Kids using foul words can be considered as teasing?" She asked but even Luna was surprised. She hadn’t heard them say anything like that.

"Hey, brat." The boy poked Rachael’s head with a blue crayon. "Are you going to ignore us today again? What? Will you act like you don’t care and when you get home, cry to your mummy?" Once again, everyone laughed but Rachael ignored them.

"What is the meaning of this? Is this what happens here on a daily basis? This is bullying."

The boy got annoyed at Rachael’s silence and snatched her red crayon.

"If you want this back, ask your daddy to come get it." He said and then sneered. "Oh, that’s right. You don’t have one. Bastard."

Rachael reached for the crayon in his hand but he refused to give it back. She gave out a little sigh, looked down at her half drawing and shook her head.

"You can have it." She said,

"What?"
