I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 114: Difficult Birth and Severe Hemorrhage
After Nolan Winslow left with Lily Callahan, Ryan Winslow immediately went to see Gregory Winslow and told him what had happened.
Grace Winslow’s expression changed. She wiped her hands and walked out of the kitchen. "Isn’t my sister-in-law only seven months along? How could she be giving birth already?"
Ryan Winslow shook his head, looking lost. "I don’t know. Mom wasn’t feeling well on the way back from Grandma’s house. She said her stomach hurt the whole time. It was hurting for a whole day at Grandma’s, too, but Grandma didn’t do anything for her."
"What happened when you went there? Tell your auntie everything." Grace Winslow immediately realized something was wrong.
Ryan Winslow couldn’t lie, so he told her everything that had happened at their grandmother’s house, down to the last detail.
"Grandma and Uncle were really unhappy with Mom. They wanted her to ask you for money, a lot of it. They said you’re rich, unmarried, and have no kids, so you couldn’t possibly spend that much."
"Dad and Mom refused, so they called Mom ungrateful and heartless."
"I saw Mom crying secretly in the middle of the night."
"Auntie, will my mom be okay?"
Even after he finished speaking, the worry in Ryan Winslow’s eyes hadn’t faded.
Grace Winslow turned and went back to her room. She grabbed her bag, stuffed some money inside, and then took Ryan Winslow with her to the hospital.
Irene Lynch and Gregory Winslow were also worried about Lily Callahan’s condition, so they all went together.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, they saw Nolan Winslow anxiously pacing back and forth outside the delivery room.
Grace Winslow went up and grabbed his arm. "Brother, how’s Lily?"
"I don’t know. There’s no news yet. She’s not even at her due date! She’s almost three months early. Nothing bad is going to happen, is it?" Nolan Winslow was so anxious he was breaking out in a cold sweat in the middle of winter.
Grace Winslow squeezed his palm reassuringly. "It won’t. Luck is on her side. She’ll definitely be okay."
The words had barely left her mouth when the delivery room door opened. A nurse rushed out, calling urgently, "Lily Callahan’s family? Who is Lily Callahan’s family?"
Nolan Winslow, stiff with anxiety, stumbled forward. "I... I’m her husband. How’s my wife?"
"The patient’s condition is critical. It’s a premature birth with a breech presentation, and she’s hemorrhaging badly. Is anyone here type B? We need a blood transfusion for the patient, now," the nurse said with a grave expression.
Nolan Winslow’s legs felt weak, and he nearly lost his footing.
"I... I’m type A. Type A. What... what do we do?" His legs were so weak he had to lean against the wall to stay upright.
Just then, Grace Winslow spoke up. "Nurse, I’m type O. Can I donate blood for her?"
"Yes, you can. Come with me, quickly." The nurse’s eyes lit up as she grabbed Grace Winslow and led her away.
Nolan Winslow remained standing at the delivery room door, his face pale.
By the time Gregory Winslow and Irene Lynch arrived, Grace Winslow had already given blood and come out.
Her face was a little pale.
Irene Lynch took her by the arm and asked with concern, "How are you? Do you feel unwell?"
"Mom, I’m fine. I’m sure my sister-in-law will be fine, too."
Grace Winslow shook her head gently.
The family stood together at the door of the delivery room.
Nolan Winslow’s palms were slick with cold sweat as he prayed relentlessly for Lily Callahan to be okay.
Gregory Winslow and Irene Lynch stood to one side, anxious but unable to do anything to help. All they could do was pray in silence.
Time ticked by, second by second.
Grace Winslow felt a knot of anxiety tightening in her chest as they waited.
’Could it be that even after changing so many things, I still can’t alter Lily Callahan’s fate?’
’In her past life, Lily had suffered a shock when something happened to Nolan while she was pregnant. It induced premature labor, and ultimately, she couldn’t be saved. She and her baby both died in the delivery room.’
Grace Winslow’s palms felt cold. She prayed ceaselessly in her heart.
Finally, the door to the delivery room opened.
A nurse came out holding a baby. She looked from side to side, and upon spotting Nolan Winslow, she placed the baby directly into his arms. "Congratulations, your wife gave birth to a daughter. But she’s premature and very frail. You should consider putting her in an incubator. I’ll tell you up front, though, the cost isn’t low."
As she spoke, the nurse glanced at Nolan Winslow.
’These days, everyone still favored boys over girls.’
’She’d seen it far too often in the maternity ward.’
’A premature baby like this... families usually wouldn’t spend the money to have her meticulously cared for in an incubator.’
’It costs several yuan a day. A few days of that could eat up a worker’s entire monthly salary.’
’Who would be willing to spend that kind of money on a baby girl?’
Nolan Winslow looked down at the child in his arms.
She was tiny, like a little kitten. Having just been born, her skin was reddish and wrinkled, making her look like a little old lady.
But he loved her immensely.
Without a moment’s hesitation, he said, "Put her in one. You must make sure my daughter is safe and sound. I’m begging you. I’m willing to pay whatever it costs."
Hearing Nolan Winslow’s words, the nurse was a bit surprised. She hadn’t expected him to be so responsible.
"Your wife will be out in a little while. You can go wait in the ward," the nurse instructed. She then took the baby back from Nolan Winslow’s arms and carried her to the nursery.
Nolan Winslow couldn’t bring himself to leave. Worried about Lily Callahan’s condition, he remained on guard outside the delivery room.
After a full half-hour wait, Lily Callahan was finally wheeled out.
Her face was ashen, and she hadn’t fully regained consciousness yet. She looked incredibly weak.
Nolan Winslow hurried forward and grabbed her hand. "Honey, how are you feeling?"
Lily Callahan struggled to open her eyes. Seeing Nolan Winslow, she asked in a small voice, "The baby?"
"The nurse said she’s weak and needs to be in an incubator. I’ve already had the nurse take her. Once she’s a little better, she can come out and see you," Nolan Winslow said softly, his voice gentle as he spoke to Lily Callahan.
"Will it cost a lot of money?" Lily Callahan was still worried about the cost.
Irene Lynch, who had overheard from the side, quickly chimed in, "Lily, dear, don’t you worry about the money. Even if Nolan is short on cash, you still have your father-in-law and me, don’t you? We can’t just stand by and watch something happen to our precious granddaughter. Don’t worry. Right now, you need to focus on getting better. Taking care of yourself is the most important thing, you understand?"
Lily Callahan’s eyes grew hot with tears.
Seeing this, Irene Lynch was startled. "Oh, you mustn’t cry! Crying during your postpartum confinement will ruin your eyes later on."
"You came in such a hurry, you must not have brought anything. I’ll go home and pack some things for your hospital stay."
"In any case, you just rest and get well. Don’t you worry about anything else."
Irene Lynch held Lily Callahan’s hand, her voice soft and soothing.
The weight that had been pressing on Lily Callahan’s heart finally lifted.
Irene Lynch was going to go home to pack for Lily Callahan.
Gregory Winslow couldn’t be of much help at the hospital, so he went back with her.
Grace Winslow went with them to the hospital room. While Lily Callahan was resting, she pressed a hundred yuan into Nolan Winslow’s hand. "Brother, take this for now. Think of it as a red envelope from me for my little niece."
"No, no, I can’t take your money. I still owe you three hundred yuan from before." Nolan Winslow instinctively tried to push the money back.
Grace Winslow shot him a glare. "This isn’t for you, it’s for my niece. What right do you have to refuse on her behalf?"
"Just take it already. Don’t make me yell at you."
