Chapter 129: Do you want to sleep with mummy tonight?

It happened on a day when Alexa was out of town. Rachael got into trouble for the first time with her mates who told her that she was a bastard. How they got that word, they said their mother told them that and the reason why she didn’t have a father was because she was unwanted.

And even when she yelled out that it was because her father was dead, they called her a liar and laughed at her. She felt so hurt that she cried and bit one of them hard to the point of bleeding.

Her mother couldn’t be called in so Serena was called.

Serena calmly handled the matter and compensated the other party but when they got to the car, ready to head home, she turned to Rachael and asked,

"Do you want to trouble your mother?" Rachael looked up and shook her head. "Then why are you causing trouble? You should know that your mother has a hard time raising you alone. There’s me, yes but I’m not always around and if you do things that will make your mum worry then she will start regretting." She stroked her hair.

Though she spoke calmly, Rachael felt scared. This was the first time she was being reprimanded like this. Was she really causing trouble?

"And when she starts regretting, she will start to feel the absence of your father and maybe cry. It’s not good." She said while smiling but her smile was dark and held hidden meaning as she looked down at the poor innocent child.

"I’m sorry." Rachael apologized as her body began to shake. "I didn’t mean for that to happen. I just..."

"Of course you didn’t. You’re a good girl but... it still did." Serena said and Rachael flinched. Her eyes brimmed with tears but she tried to hold it jn. "This can be avoided, okay, Rachael? All you need to do is act a little bit mature. Don’t listen to the cruel and harsh words they may say, don’t mind if they insult you and don’t react. Just smile and be the bigger person. Understand that your mother cannot afford to be distracted during this critical time. Do you understand?"

Rachael, though scared, nodded her head.

"I-I understand." She said in a low voice and tried hard to keep her tears from falling.

"That’s good. Now, once we get home, try not to let your mum know that something went wrong at your school. If not , she’ll worry, okay?"

Rachael nodded her head and sniffed.

"Okay."

From that day, she started acting out of the ordinary and doing things for herself. It wasn’t that bad but with time, it grew worse and Alexa didn’t know how to address the issue. She felt her baby was growing too much in her absence.

It worried her that her daughter was not like kids her age but she had equally been too busy to notice so she also blamed herself for what had gone wrong.

"Do you want to sleep with mummy tonight?" Alexa asked and surprisingly, Rachael nodded.

"Yes, please."

It had been a while since they slept in the same bed. Alexa hugged her and gently stroked her hair.

"Baby, do you want me to read you a bedtime story?" She offered and Rachael wanted to accept but then she remembered that her mother would have to go to work the next day. She didn’t want to tire her out reading a bedtime story late into the night.

Her little arms clutched around her as she shook her head in her embrace.

"No. I’m feeling really sleepy. Let’s just sleep." She said and Alexa shut her eyes in defeat.

"Alright."

Her daughter, an ever considerate and overly mature four years old. It was worrying.

Meanwhile, Raymond arrived home that night and went straight to bed. For the first time, he actually slept without drinking or taking his pills and it was a peaceful one at that. Not so peaceful but by the time he woke up by whatever was plaguing his dreams, it was already dawn.

Seeing the outside light seeping into his room through the opened windows and listening to the sound of birds chirping, Raymond realized that he had never had such a goodnight sleep since Ariel’s death.

He felt very refreshed and his heart felt lighter. Alexa’s words had that much impact on him.

Though he had a nightmare, he could barely remember what it was about.

Alexa Smith. She really knew her stuff. He should probably schedule the next appointment as soon as possible.

That day, Paige came over to his office and asked right away,

"How did it go?"

Raymond looked up from his work and gave her a blank stare but something about that stare made Paige feel that it went well.

"She was that good?" She asked, astonished.

"Were you expecting lesser results?" Raymond asked her and she tittered.

"No but I had my fingers crossed." She said and smiled. "So, I assume you got a good night’s sleep? What did she tell you that I didn’t?"

Raymond looked aside, remembering Alexa’s words and repeated with a somewhat heavy smile.

"I told her I was having a hard time forgetting Ariel."

"You did?" Paige looked at him surprised and he nodded. "Then, what did she say?"

"She said ’why would you try to forget her? Those memories you made together, those laughter and tears you shared together, they’re all a part of you and there is no way you can forget them. In times like this, you shouldn’t try to forget the other, you should try to live with the absence and let the happy moments you shared together be your strength. That’s the proper way to move on. Trying to forget the other will just make it seem like you were trying to forget them because they were some sort of sin in your life and that shouldn’t be."

Raymond almost laughed at the end of his own narration. It was almost comical how he remembered her exact words. But how wouldn’t he remember the words that were giving his mind some peace?

Paige stared with a stunned face. Raymond was... smiling. He was actually smiling. This was the first time since Ariel died.

"Then, have you made your next appointment yet?"

"Not yet." Raymond answered and rubbed his forehead. "I checked my schedule this morning and I’m too busy to make time to travel." He said and Paige slammed her hands on the table.

"Why do you become dumb in things like this? Just invite her over every weekend. Let her come to your mansion and give you your therapy sessions. It’s that simple."
