Chapter 219: Miracle

Zephan;

Dinner at Nagari is usually silent.

Not tense silence...just... the quiet type. The peaceful type.

The kind Aunt Selthía prefers. The kind Zethar and I have grown used to since childhood.

Words tend to feel unnecessary in this castle unless we need them.

But tonight, as Elian sits at the long oak table beside me, everything feels different.

He looks small. Still worn out.

Still carrying that invisible weight in his chest.

But at least he’s here. At least he isn’t upstairs alone, crying over things I can’t help him feel better about.

I help him brush off a strand of hair about to get into his eye, and just then Aunt Selthía sits at the head of the table.

Without acknowledging any of us. She begins to eat quietly as usual.

Zethar starts eating too, and I’m about to dig into my meal when I notice Eliàn watching her... carefully.

I notice this because I have been watching him since we stepped into the dining hall... studying every flinch, every shy glance, every small attempt to adjust to our home.

He’s trying. And I appreciate that. It’s all that matters.

I pass him a plate and scoop out small portions of roasted root vegetables and spiced goat meat, keeping the flavours mild in case he isn’t used to our spices.

He murmurs a soft thank you, and I smile. He’s so timid.

I turn back to my plate, and suddenly, a blue shimmer flickers in the air near Aunt Selthía’s shoulder.

Elián notices it too, and his eyes widen as he watches in wonder..

A soft ripple of magic stirs the air as a blue snake materialises... smooth-scaled, bright golden eyes, and glowing faintly, as if its scales hold moonlight trapped within.

The snake coils gently around Aunt Selthía’s neck and lowers its head beside her jaw.

She doesn’t flinch. As this is one of her familiars.

She simply reaches for a small strip of meat and lifts it to the serpent’s mouth.

Elián inhales sharply in awe as he stares at the massive snake, and only then does Aunt Selthía glance up at him.

For a moment, I tense up, expecting her to shut him out. To ignore him completely. To respond in that cold, impenetrable way, she always treats most people.

And Elián, being Elián, just goes full swing into his default setting. He blurts out exactly what he’s thinking.

"Um...do the snakes just... show up like that?" he asks softly, and Aunt Selthía blinks at him.

"Do they listen to you because you’re the queen? Or is it because of... um... Nagari’s culture? And why does it...sorry...why does she... he?... glow blue?" He continues, and I bite my lips in budding panic.

"Is that a magic thing? Or is every snake here blue? And why do they seem so calm? Do they act differently with Nagari people, or...?" He continues, and this time, Zethar nearly chokes on his drink.

I stay still. Very still as I watch this.

Aunt Selthía pauses, and she straightens as her fingers gently stroke the snake’s head.

This is it.

She’s going to shut him down.

She’ll look away, go back to eating, pretend he doesn’t exist.

The gentle version of her silence is the warmest she ever gets. Elián is sweet...but naive. I don’t want him hurt, but my Auntie’s dismissal. I need to do something.

I open my mouth to interject, but before I can speak, Aunt Selthía cuts me off.

"This one is called Azurel," she says quietly, as she feeds the snake another small strip of meat.

"He is one of my personal guardians." She adds with her tone soft... almost warm.

Elián’s eyes twinkle at the new information, and I just turn back to look at Zethar, who’s staring at the exchange blatantly.

Did... did she just welcome conversation??

"Wow..." Elián replies like a child learning something fascinating, and the edges of Aunt Selthía’s lips twitch in what almost looks like a smile.

Aunt Selthía continues, still in that calm, patient tone I have never heard directed at anyone before.

"In Nagari, the serpents sense energy. They respond to purity, to calmness, and to truth. They avoid malice. They avoid deceit. They avoid those whose spirits are too loud." She says, and a subtle, pointed look passes between her and Zethar.

"And they listen to you because you’re the queen?" Elián asks with pure fascination, and Aunt Selthía nods.

"Yes," she replies.

"My bloodline carries the Serpent’s Blessing. The guardian serpents are bound to the throne. They see through my eyes when I allow it. They hear my calls, even in silence." She adds, and Elián leans forward, completely absorbed.

I have never seen Aunt Selthía entertain this much curiosity from anyone. Ever.

"And Azurel glows blue because...?" Elián pushes further, and I can’t help but wonder how much further till she loses her patience.

"Because his core is infused with moon-born magic," she explains.

"It is a rare gift. Peace-bringers carry such light." She explains, and Elián’s brows shoot up.

"Peace-bringers... like the snake you used to calm me earlier?" He questions, and her gaze softens... only slightly, but enough for me to notice.

"Yes." She replies, and Eliàn smiles, excited by the new knowledge he’s acquiring.

"That’s awesome..." he whispers, and Aunt Selthía smiles. A real, delicate smile this time.

My heart slams to a stop as I stare at my aunt. I’ve never seen anyone make her soften like this. Not me. Not Zethar, no one!

Something about Elián... disarms her.

I can’t explain it.

Azurel lifts his head from her shoulder, flicking his tongue in Elían’s direction. Elián stiffens as the snake studies him with unblinking, steady curiosity.

Aunt Selthía watches them and then, without warning, she touches the snake’s back.

"Go."

My jaw drops.

Go where!? To Elián!?

I try to move, but Zethar grabs my wrist under the table.

Azurel slithers across the table, moving with a silent, elegant grace till he stops in front of Elián.

Elián blinks at the snake and moves back a bit before leaning towards me.

"What... do I do?" He whispers, and I look up at Aunt Selthía, who’s still eating in silence.

Elián takes a deep breath, and to my surprise, he gathers the courage to extend one trembling hand.

He touches Azurel’s head, and the snake bows into Elían’s touch.

"He likes you," Aunt Selthía says quietly, and Elián looks up at her with happy eyes.

"You think so?" He whispers, visibly shy.

"If he did not, you would not be allowed to touch him." Aunt Selthía replies, and Elián exhales shakily.

He looks calmer.

More at peace.

Better than he looked when we first woke up here.

My chest warms unexpectedly as I stare at him.

I watch Elián continue petting Azurel’s head gently with trembling fingers, and Aunt Selthía resumes eating. She finishes her food quietly, but every now and then her gaze flickers toward Elián, who’s now feeding Azurel.

Her eyes hold no malice or coldness.

She’s just... Just... watching him.

Zethar leans toward me, muttering under his breath,

"Since when does she talk to anyone?"

"Be quiet," I hiss, but he’s right.

This is new.

VERY new...

Strange even, and maybe... hopeful.

The dinner continues with Elián asking quieter questions about Nagari, about the serpents, about the way the kingdom works, and Aunt Selthía answers each one of his questions in that calm, steady voice.

Her voice isn’t affectionate, and it’s not overly warm...but it’s gentler than I’ve ever heard her.

By the time dinner ends, Elián looks like a child excited after a good first hunting day.

He looks less frightened. A little more at ease.

I watch him quietly as Azurel curls back around Aunt Selthía’s neck, settling in like a soft collar of blue light.

When she stands to leave, she pauses... her eyes settling on Elián one last time.

"Rest well," she says simply, and Elián nods, visibly nervous but trying to be polite.

"Thank you... Aunt Selthía." He replies with a timid smile, and her eyes soften...just faintly...before she turns and leaves the hall with Azurel gliding peacefully along her shoulders.

Zethar grabs my shoulder as soon as she’s gone.

"What just happened?" he whispers.

"Did she... did she just like someone?" He adds, and I don’t answer.

I look at Elián... sitting quietly, staring at Aunt Selthía as she walks off, fully unaware of the miracle he just performed.

My chest tightens again... this time with something warmer, more fragile.

If Elián is pregnant, if he is carrying a child, we will need Aunt Selthía’s help to protect him.

And for the first time since arriving home...

I feel the faintest spark of hope.

Because maybe... just maybe... Aunt Selthía likes him.
