Chapter 449: Chapter 449. The Silent Butcher

The shadow creatures started to scout the x22-B and the planet, as Kailen remained completely relaxed in the desert.

He observed everything through the eyes of the shadow hounds calmly.

In the base, several operatives were going on about different things.

Kailen’s shadow hound searched through every capable area—bedrooms, offices, training centers, everywhere. Thanks to the teleportation runes, and the fact that his shadow creatures knew runesmithery, any area where the use of perception was cut off was not a problem for him.

The shadow hound would simply make use of a teleportation rune, disappear, and reappear at that place.

After searching the base for three days, the shadow hound finally noticed something peculiar.

"Thankfully, I considered this situation and bought a rank 3 rune inscribed camera from the runesmith association before embarking on the mission, else, capturing this on camera for prove of eliminating the right targets to enhance the credibility of my mission completion would have been difficult.

Let’s take footage of this. Observe before elimination."

"Yes, Lord," the shadow hound replied.

Kailen saw through the eyes of the shadow hound. A particular individual had an invisibility rune on.

Several operatives in the surroundings could not see them, but thanks to Kailen’s elemental mirroring, he saw through the eyes of the shadow creature the outline of the fellow’s universe energy pathways.

She seemed to be attached to a wall, with vigilance, as if she were waiting to strike.

She was a rank 5 beginner stage galactic level....

"She’s a vimodial contractor," the Time Dilation Artifact said.

"Thanks," Kailen said.

Then, the assassin was about to make her move.

"Her target is that miner, as I thought. My deductions were spot on."

Kailen was calm, as if he was not going to intervene.

The miner, who had just entered his room, suddenly noticed a shift in his environment. It was as if someone was stalking him for a moment—until it disappeared.

He shrugged, thinking it was his mind playing tricks on him.

But just when he lay on his bed to rest, closed his eyes, and fell asleep, the veiled assassin lunged towards him, still invisible, aiming to kill the miner swiftly and covertly.

The strike was aimed for the neck.

Just when the attack was about landing, the assassin felt a prickling sensation in her body.

Right after this occurrence, she felt completely weak and numb in every part of her body, until she suddenly lost consciousness and died.

"Extract the poison. Told to be extremely covert about this mission. Although the mission outcome will most likely be classified, no need risk leaving clues behind that I’m possibly behind this."

"Yes, Lord," the shadow creature replied, quickly extracting the poison from the system of the dead assassin who now lay lifelessly in the room of the miner, without any poison in her body.

This occurrence went on for a few days.

Kailen would detect vimodial contractor assassins at the beginner stage galactic level in x22-B, take videos of their assassination attempts on the miners and blacksmiths, then eliminate them swiftly and quietly, without leaving any prove that could connect the occurrence to him.

Very soon, panic and dread started to spread in the base.

They didn’t know who was behind these occurrences and assumed it was the mysterious assassins that had been eliminating the miners who were killing others.

"Major, with all due respect sir, we need to do something about this situation."

"Yes sir, how about we contact HQ base 322, they planned on sending an anonymous reinforcement to operate from the shadows. What’s taking them so long?"

The major in charge of the base sighed deeply, as if he was in thought, ignoring the concerns of his subordinates.

He chuckled lightly, then replied with a carefree demeanor. From how no one was surprised by the casual behavior of their superior, it was obvious that they were used to his mannerisms, but they didn’t dare cross the line and disrespect him.

He said,

"The anonymous reinforcement sent by HQ base 322 is the one behind these frequent deaths. I contacted HQ base 322, and they told us to not panic, and just continue our operations as the anonymous operative does their work."

"Does that mean..."

"Yes," the major nodded, interrupting the thought process of one captain. "Although HQ base 322 did not mention this, we can infer from their response that every dead body that has been found recently is most likely an assassin the veiled reinforcement operative has killed. Also, have you noticed the pattern?"

The captains in the hall looked at one another for a moment, until their eyes widened at the same time in realization.

"Looks like your brains are now working," the major continued. "All the dead individuals have been found close to either a miner or a blacksmith. Does that not tell you they are assassins?"

"It does."

"I can’t believe we didn’t see it from this angle."

"The veiled operative did not extricate the dead bodies, and left them at the places of targets of the assassinations, because they wanted to leave a clue—a subtle reminder—without interfering in our activities or administrative structure, that the miners and blacksmiths being targeted most likely has something to do with the adamantine sand mine in the base," the major said, as his subordinates nodded in realization.

Kailen, still on the desert, listening to the whole conversation through the eyes of a shadow hound, couldn’t help but nod.

"This major of this base is really smart. He figured out my reason for not extricating the dead bodies and leaving them at the rooms of the said targets. A requirement of the mission was to leave this place in a condition that makes it possible for further investigations, right? These clues should help in achieving that.

It seems HQ base 322 is confident that I can pull this off. They didn’t even contact me to confirm whether or not I’m the one behind the the recent deaths. Also, the mine is in the base, huh. No wonder the whole planet seemed deserted."

After this, Kailen listened to the conversation in the room amongst the major and his subordinates.

"But what kind of assassin could pull something like this off?"

"Nothing discovered in the system of the dead assassins from the autopsy results. It’s as if they died naturally."

"The veiled operative is really dangerous. Whoever it is, it’s definitely a highly trained and skilled elite operative."

"Lethal, absolutely lethal."

Kailen ignored them, as this part of their conversation was useless, and decided to focus on his mission.

After this, the major and the higher ups acted normally, refusing to disclose information of a veiled operative acting and eliminating assassins.

They were aware that spies were definitely amongst them, and if news of this spread, it could give the enemy an opportunity to use the information and make different plans.

They made the members of the base speculate about the cause of the deaths, only telling them to calm down and go about their business because everything was under control.

The members of the base were not satisfied with the answer from the higher ups, but they were recruits. Their duty—to follow orders.

So they did as they were told.

But the deaths of operatives in the base piled up.

And these dead operatives had always been found near a miner or blacksmith, and this left them puzzled. But they had no answer to the situation. Only the higher ups knew what was going on.

The operatives at the base started whispering amongst themselves.

"With the way the higher ups are acting calm about this, it’s definitely possible someone undercover is getting rid of the actual assassins."

"Are you saying the assassins are our own recruits?"

"Yeah, can vimodial contractors be detected through any means?"

"Yeah, even if your wife were one, would you know?"

"Why the sudden mention of vimodial contractors?"

"Is it not obvious? Apart from them, who else will attack the miners and blacksmiths of the base?"

"They want to weaken our ability to produce weapons with the adamantine sand and cripple our fighting force ultimately."

"That’s true. So it means the unknown person killing these presumed operative assassins targeting the miners and blacksmiths, is some sort of secret reinforcement, huh?"

"Most likely, this Silent Butcher guy is on another level."

Kailen currently stood on the desert sand with his hands in his pockets.

He had spent a whole two weeks at this place.

After monitoring the place for a week after getting rid of the assassins, he had stayed another week to see if some of them will pop up as some sort of reinforcement.

"It seems they were planted here with a fixed number, as there is no teleportation gate on the planet by vimodial contractors to bring them here actively," Kailen said.

"Perhaps, they will attempt to do that by adding some of them to the next batch of recruits. But that’s an issue for the higher ups. I’m just on a mission. But what kind of name is the Silent Butcher? Am I a horror movie myth or something?"

After this, Kailen stretched with a yawn, as he sighed.

"I miss a good shower, time to head back."
