The boy grimaced as he tried to hold back his tears. It took a while, but he finally managed. As a reward, I petted the top of his head and praised him.

"It’s important to be strong, okay?"

He nodded, saying that he would strive to be like me. "I’m going to become a very strong man."

"Very good, then when I come back, I hope to hear good news. Study hard and strive to achieve that. If you’re a good boy, I’ll give you a surprise when I return."

"I will be," he said with determination. "But I don’t want you to be away, not for so long..." he seemed about to cry again.

I continued talking to the boy for a little while longer, assuring him with a smile that I would return soon.

Finally, I lifted him into my arms and spun him in the air so that he would be more cheerful. Then I gave him one last kiss on his forehead and said goodbye to the boy.
