Chapter 88: Our New Fu Mansion 2

We stood there for a moment after Han Fuji left.

No one spoke.

Then I turned and walked into the house.

"Let’s go inside," I said.

Everyone followed behind me.

The moment we stepped in, I slowed down slightly.

The space was large, just as we saw from outside, but it was obvious no one had lived here for a long time. Dust covered almost everything. The floor looked dull, the tables had a thin layer of dirt, and even the air felt heavy.

Fu Li frowned as she looked around.

"This place has not been cleaned in a long time," she said.

Fu Tong stepped in behind her and coughed lightly.

"If we stay here like this, we will not even be able to sleep properly."

I nodded.

"Then we clean it first."

There was no need to say more than that.

Fu Fei had already started moving. She walked toward one of the side rooms and pushed the door open.

After a short moment, she called out,

"There are some cleaning tools here."

We all walked over.

Inside the small room, there were a few old brooms, cloths, and buckets. They were worn, but still usable.

Fu Teng picked up one of the cloths and checked it.

"These will work," he said.

That was enough.

Everyone began to move naturally.

Fu Tong picked up a broom and headed outside.

"I will take care of the courtyard," he said.

The courtyard was large, but it had gathered a lot of dust and dry leaves. There was also an open kitchen at the side and a big empty basin that looked like it had not been used in a long time.

He started sweeping slowly, clearing the ground bit by bit.

Fu Teng stayed inside.

"I will wipe help as well," he said as he began cleaning the tables, windows, and shelves.

Fu Fei and Madame Fu walked toward the outdoor kitchen together.

Fu Fei looked around carefully.

"This place is still usable," she said.

Madame Fu nodded.

"Yes, we just need to clean it well."

The two of them began working side by side, clearing the dirt and wiping the surfaces.

Inside the house, Fu Li picked up a broom and turned toward the rooms.

"Let’s clean these first," she said.

"I will help," Bai Ming added quietly.

Fu Li looked at her, then gave a small nod.

"Alright."

The two of them went in together.

Downstairs, there was a large dining area and a small indoor kitchen with cabinets. There were also three rooms.

When they entered, they quickly saw the condition.

Some of the wooden beds were broken.

The bedding was old and dirty.

Fu Li shook her head.

"These cannot be used."

Bai Ming agreed.

They began removing the old sheets and dragging the broken pieces outside.

Upstairs had five rooms.

They were dusty, but at least they were spacious.

Enough for everyone.

Outside, Master Fu slowly sat down.

"I will stay with the children," he said.

Fu Jin and Fu Jun were already playing nearby. When Fu Qin and Fu Lin joined them, the four of them began running around the courtyard.

The space was wide enough for them to play freely.

Their laughter made the place feel less empty.

I stood there quietly for a moment, watching everyone.

Everyone had found something to do.

No one complained.

Then I turned to Fu Sheng.

"We need to get things," I said.

He looked around the house once more, then nodded.

"You are right."

Without wasting time, he walked toward the wagon.

He began taking down the blankets and the few belongings we had brought with us. He carried them easily over his shoulder.

Then he walked back to my side.

"I will come with you," he said.

I smiled slightly.

"Good."

With that, we turned and walked out together, leaving the others behind as they continued cleaning and settling into the house.

Fu Sheng pulled the wagon behind him, the wooden wheels rolling slowly over the ground as we left our courtyard and stepped back onto the path.

As we passed by the other houses, I noticed they were still outside.

Li Manman stood with Fu Fong and the rest of that side of the family.

Her eyes landed on me immediately.

That look—

Sharp.

Full of resentment.

She did not even try to hide it.

She gave me a long, heavy side eye as we walked past.

I only smiled.

A small, unbothered smile.

As if I did not even notice her.

Her expression darkened slightly, but I had already looked away.

I was not interested.

We left Unit 50 and made our way toward the market area.

The closer we got, the more people there were.

Stalls lined the sides of the road, and people moved around, buying, selling, talking. It was not lively like a normal city, but it was far from empty.

As we passed, some people looked at us.

Their eyes lingered.

New faces always stood out.

I noticed it, but I did not react.

Fu Sheng walked beside me quietly, pulling the wagon without complaint.

After a while, he finally spoke.

"Su Long."

I turned slightly.

"Yes?"

He hesitated for a brief moment before continuing.

"The money you used earlier..."

His voice was calm, but there was something else in it.

"Where did you get it from?"

I smiled.

"I took it from my parents before we left," I said lightly. "I brought quite a lot."

I tilted my head slightly.

"So you do not need to worry."

He did not respond immediately.

I could feel it.

He was still thinking.

After a few steps, he spoke again.

"You should not spend carelessly," he said.

His tone was not harsh.

Just steady.

"We have just arrived. We do not know how things work here yet."

I looked at him.

He was still walking forward, his eyes focused ahead.

"I do not want you to feel pressured to use everything you have," he added.

There was a pause.

Then he said quietly,

"I can provide."

That made me stop walking.

He noticed and stopped too, turning to look at me.

His expression was serious.

"I am your husband," he said. "It is my responsibility to take care of you and this family."

His grip on the wagon tightened slightly.

"I do not want you to carry that burden."

For a moment, I just looked at him.

Then—

A small smile appeared on my lips.

"You are thinking too much again," I said.

I stepped closer to him slightly.

"I am not struggling," I added. "And I am not forcing myself."

My voice softened a little.

"If I have something and I can use it, then I will."

I looked at him directly.

"And you... you are already doing enough."

He did not speak.

But I could see the slight change in his expression.

I reached out and lightly held his arm.

"Do not make it into something heavy," I said.

Then I smiled again.

"Let’s just focus on settling down first."

For a moment, he looked at me.

Then he nodded slightly.

"...Alright."

We continued walking.

Into the market.

We continued walking into the market.

This time, I paid closer attention to everything around me.

There were stalls lined on both sides—vegetables, grains, tools, clothes, and other daily necessities. The place was not lively, but it was active enough. People moved around, bargaining, buying, watching.

I slowed down a little and spoke as I thought.

"We need quite a number of things," I said.

Fu Sheng glanced at me.

"Like what?"

I raised my fingers and counted calmly.

"Cooking utensils, proper bedding, water containers, storage jars... and tools," I said.

I looked around again before adding,

"And firewood."

He nodded.

"That is necessary."

I paused for a moment, then added,

"And fresh food."

At that point, my thoughts shifted.

I had already stored a large amount of food in my space.

More than enough.

But I could not take anything out in front of him.

I needed to find a way to quietly move things into the wagon without him noticing.

I kept my expression normal.

I need to distract him...

We walked a little further and entered the meat section.

The smell hit immediately.

I stopped.

"I did not store meat," I said.

Fu Sheng nodded.

"Then we should buy some."

We walked toward one of the stalls.

The seller was a rough-looking woman with a strong build and sharp eyes.

"What do you want?" she asked bluntly.

I pointed at a decent piece of meat.

"How much is this?"

She looked at me carefully, then her lips curled slightly.

"Ten taels," she said.

I did not react immediately.

But beside me—

Fu Sheng frowned.

"Ten taels?" he repeated. "That is too much."

The woman scoffed loudly.

"If you cannot afford it, then leave," she said. "This is the barren lands. Prices are like that here."

Her tone was rude.

Fu Sheng’s expression darkened slightly.

"That is not the proper price," he said calmly.

She crossed her arms.

"Then go and find somewhere cheaper," she snapped. "No one is forcing you to buy from me."

I was just about to speak—

When a clear female voice cut in from behind us.

"That is not ten taels."

We turned.

A young girl stepped forward.

Her long black hair was tied into a high ponytail, and she wore a simple yellow hanfu. She looked young and pretty, but her expression was sharp and confident.

She walked closer and looked directly at the seller.

"The actual price is five taels," she said clearly. "Even in this place, no one sells it for ten unless they are trying to cheat someone."

The woman’s face changed.

"What are you saying?" she snapped.

The girl did not back down.

"I am saying you are overcharging," she replied. "And everyone here knows it."

A few people nearby began to look over.

The seller’s expression stiffened.

"Mind your business," she said.

The girl crossed her arms.

"I am minding it," she said calmly. "Because you are trying to cheat new people."

There was a brief silence.

The pressure built.

The seller clicked her tongue in annoyance.

"...Fine," she said at last. "Five taels."

Her tone was clearly unwilling.

I stepped forward.

"I will take it," I said. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Fu Sheng paid, and the meat was handed over.

We stepped aside.

Then I turned to the girl.

"Thank you," I said.

She smiled immediately.

Bright and open.

"My name is An Li," she said cheerfully.

Then she looked at us with interest.

"You two are new here, right?.. haha I’m from unit 50 as well."
