Deceiving Her Ears: Ignoring Your Call-Chapter 84: Until You Cry Red-Eyed and Beg Me to Let You Go
"We know each other."
"Not really."
They spoke at the same time.
Natalie could sense a weird tension between them, tugging lightly at Isaac Vaughn’s shirt at his lower back.
Isaac looked down, meeting her questioning gaze, and replied coldly to Tristan Jordan, "We still have things to do. We’re leaving now."
Then he opened the passenger side door, shielding Natalie as she got in, and drove off.
Tristan watched the car disappear from sight, a meaningful smile curling at his lips before he turned around and walked toward his own car.
——
Isaac hadn’t told anyone about his return this time; he booked a hotel room.
Natalie walked in and immediately took out a thick stack of documents, examining them with the kind of focus you’d expect from someone doing homework.
Seeing her like that, Isaac couldn’t bring himself to disturb her.
Before long, night had fallen.
He went outside to smoke two cigarettes, and when he returned, she was still reading.
He walked behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her earlobe. "How much longer? Aren’t you hungry?"
"I’m not hungry. I still have a few left to read."
As Natalie spoke, she kept flipping through the files, her eyes never leaving the pages.
Isaac simply picked her up, not taking no for an answer.
"What are you doing?"
Natalie squeaked in surprise, instinctively circling her arms around his neck, eyes wide.
Isaac carried her to the bed, pressed her down, then threatened, "Either you eat, or I eat you. Pick one."
"You..."
Natalie tried to struggle away.
But she couldn’t move him at all.
Isaac clicked his tongue, bit the tip of her nose, and growled, "Hurry up and choose!"
Natalie sighed softly, "Alright, I got it."
Then her hands climbed up to his shoulders, and she lifted herself to kiss him on the lips, trying to negotiate:
"But can we just do it once, please? I really have a lot left to go through, and there’s a meeting tomorrow. I’d rather not be exhausted."
Isaac looked at her, suddenly realizing she’d misunderstood his intent.
He just thought she should eat something.
"That’s not what I meant."
Feeling like this was all pointless, he rolled off her.
Natalie froze.
She figured he was mad because she didn’t want to have sex.
"It’s not that I don’t want to," she said, hugging him from behind, her chin resting on his shoulder. "Don’t be upset. I get it, okay? However many times you want is fine, alright?"
"What, you think I’m a beast?" Isaac shot back coldly.
He pushed her away, got out of bed and stood by the side, looking at her. "You really think I came all the way from Rhovan to Janton just to do that?"
"You don’t want to?" Natalie eyed him suspiciously. "I just said you can do whatever you want, so why are you pissed off?"
Fuck!
Isaac felt like punching cotton—utterly powerless!
Fucking hell!
He sneered, mocking, "If all I wanted was sex, why would I come to you? Do you have an extra pair of boobs or something?"
Natalie’s expression instantly turned cold.
Fuck, fuck, fuck!
Isaac wished he could cut his own tongue off.
What the fuck was he even saying!
"Little Ear, I..."
Just as he was about to explain himself and apologize, his phone rang.
He grumpily took it out and saw it was his grandpa calling.
"Hello, Grandpa."
"Isaac, you’re back in Janton, right? Come home, Grandpa’s got something to tell you."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Isaac moved his mouth, "I..."
"Go on back," Natalie got off the bed, walked over to the sofa to pick up his jacket, and handed it to him. "Don’t keep your grandpa waiting."
Isaac walked to her, and as he took the jacket, he grabbed her hand together with it, pulling her into his arms with a gentle tug.
Burying his face in her neck, his voice muffled, "I must’ve been insane just now. Don’t hold it against me."
"I just wanted you to eat something, not force sex on you."
"But, to be honest, I also really want to be with you. Bad enough to keep going till you’re crying and begging me to stop."
At first, Natalie’s heart softened, but when he got to the last line—
She shoved him off coldly.
——
The Vaughn Residence.
"Hey, look who’s back—Isaac’s here."
As soon as he walked in, Ethan Vaughn chimed in with his trademark sarcasm.
Without even glancing at him, Isaac went straight to Philip Vaughn, greeting respectfully, "Grandpa."
Philip nodded. "Back again."
"You don’t even let us know you’re coming home. Is this place still your home or not?" Ansel Vaughn scolded in a low voice.
Isaac shot his father a look, about to respond, when his mother hooked his arm.
So he fell silent.
Ethan piped up again, "Isaac really is something now. Who would’ve guessed that the Beckett Group is now being called by Natalie’s name?"
"No wonder you insisted on being with Natalie. Even if she’s your little uncle’s fiancée, even if it’s a goddamn mess, a huge scandal, you just don’t care."
"Looking back now, that was the right call."
Isaac turned to Ethan.
The jealousy in his tone was practically dripping, and the envy in his eyes was obvious enough for anyone to see. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
As if nobody could tell.
Isaac just smiled faintly, not quite smiling.
Then his grandpa spoke: "Isaac, I called you home because in two months, you’re coming back from Rhovan."
"You’ve done well at the Rhovan branch these past two months. I think you’ve learned enough. Your father and I talked it over; once you’re back, you’re joining Vaughn Group right away."
Vanessa Grant was overjoyed, squeezing her son’s arm tightly.
But Isaac knew, the real reason his grandpa was calling him back from Rhovan so soon wasn’t because he’d done well at the branch, or that he’d been honed enough.
It was obviously about his relationship with Natalie.
Ethan had chosen the Huxley family and Nancy Huxley to cement his own position.
But the Beckett family... That was on a whole other level compared to the Huxleys.
——
Soon after Isaac left, Natalie got a call from her family, asking her to come home too.
She walked into the living room, just as—
"Smack!"
Matthew Beckett hurled something at her, landing right at her feet.
She looked down. It was the divorce agreement she’d tossed into her bedside drawer that day.
"Nat, you really are something! Really fucking something!"
Matthew’s face was thunderous.
"You actually went and married Isaac Vaughn! You— You hid it from me, hid it from all of us, what the hell are you up to?"
Natalie bent down to pick up the divorce agreement, replying in a flat tone, "How could you just go through my stuff?"
"What?"
Matthew froze.
Then he grew even angrier.
"Now’s not the time to talk about that! Is that the point here?"
"Then what’s the point?"
"You! The point is you married Isaac Vaughn!"
Natalie gripped the divorce agreement tightly, looking at her father. "Yeah, I married Isaac. So? Is that not allowed?"
Matthew was shocked speechless.
It was like he was looking at a stranger.
"Nat!" Julian Beckett called out.
He too felt this Natalie was someone he didn’t recognize.
Shows what happens when you’re influenced by the wrong people.
She’d been with Isaac too long. She’d changed.
"You’re still asking ’So what?’ and ’Is that allowed?’" Matthew snapped back to his senses, gritting his teeth. "Isaac Vaughn is a wolf! Sooner or later he’s going to swallow the entire Beckett Group!"
Taking a deep breath, Matthew said,
"Isn’t this a divorce agreement? Weren’t you going to divorce him? Then go do it! Tomorrow! First thing in the morning, you go through with it!"
"I’m not divorcing him."
"You—What did you say?"
"I’m not divorcing Isaac Vaughn."
After saying that, Natalie ignored Matthew’s rage, turning to leave.
"Nat!"
Julian ran after her, stopping her. "Where are you going at this hour?"
Natalie looked back at him, her voice indifferent. "I don’t want to be here."
"This is your home," Julian frowned. "If you’re not staying home, then where will you go?"
Home?
Was this really her home?
The house in Rhovan where Isaac had ’kept’ her felt more like home than this place.
So how could she call this place home?
——
She got the earliest possible train ticket and headed back to Seaharbor.
The place she’d lived with Granny Peterson felt more like home than anywhere else.
Even if Granny Peterson was gone now.
Isaac returned to the hotel after leaving The Vaughn Residence, only to find her gone. He immediately called her, and she answered, telling him she’d gone back to Seaharbor.
"Why’d you suddenly go back to Seaharbor?"
"Just felt like it, all of a sudden."
"Video call me. Let me see you."
"I’ll call you when I get home."
It was past midnight by the time Natalie got home.
She video-called Isaac as she entered the bedroom.
The moment she walked in, she saw the doll sitting right in the middle of her bed.
Isaac noticed the color drained from her face through the video and immediately asked, "Little Ear, what’s wrong?"
The next second, the recording doll appeared on screen.
When he saw it, he instantly broke out in a cold sweat.
