Chapter 212: A new enemy - I

Her eyes snapped open instantly, as soon as she gained consciousness and the first thing Evelyn did was swung her legs off the bed and charged towards the door.

For a second, the door seemed unfamiliar but she did not pay attention to it and swung it open.

"Evelyn?" Alexis stood in front of her, clearly shocked at who opened the door from the inside before she recovered from it. "Sweetie are you right? Do you want to go to bed?"

Alexis? What was she doing here? Why would she be here?

"Wh-why are you here?"

Alexis overcame her initial shock before she laughed lightly. "It is you who is in my house. Salvatore dropped you here. How are you feeling?"

Salvatore brought her here? "Why did he bring me here?"

What was happening? So many questions were swimming in her mind that Evelyn did not know how to process them into a line or simply where to begin.

Alexis stepped closer and patted her shoulder before gently nudged her into the direction of the bed. Once Evelyn was sitting there, Alexis covered her legs and sat beside her.

"Salvatore told us that you were attacked inside the house which is why he brought you here," Alexis handed her a glass of water along with two tablets, "have some painkillers. The doctor warned us that you were going to feel a lot of pain at the back of your head where you have been hit."

When she mentioned in the pain it had the back of head in full force, making Evelyn grip the area.

How had she not noticed the blinding pain before?

"Have this," Alexis pushed the medicines into her hand.

The two gulps of water that she had practically inhaled the medicine with seemed to be like a river because the pain was not minimising.

"I’m Sorry," Alexis held Evelyn’s hand in her warm one. "Do you want me to give you a sleeping tablet? Under the doctor’s prescription I can only give you one and he did advise that it would be better if you eat a little bit."

Alexis must have figured out the uncertainty Evelyn felt because she added a little hesitantly, "have some cheese or fruit?"

A good sleep sounded alike heaven which is why Evelyn nodded.

Her eyes trailed after Alexis who walked the intercom that was next to the tour and ordered for the food to be brought in.

It had taken Agatha seconds to come along with another maid who was holding a large tray. They unfolded a small folding table and kept it on Evelyn’s lap before placing the tray there and leaving the room.

"Eat up," Alexis broke a small green grape from its stem and placed it over Evelyn’s lips, "little baby."

A small smile came to her face and she bit into the grape. She chewed it slow and well as much as headache would allow and before she knew she had polished off a bowl of grapes.

"Good," Alexis handed her a slice of cheese before handing her a small tablet. "You can have this now and hopefully I will be here when you wake up."

It was only a matter of time after she swallowed the pill that Evelyn found herself being lulled into the sleep that she desperately wanted.

*****

The next time she woke up Evelyn was aware of her surroundings before she opened her eyes. This time it was not as abruptly as it had been before.

The room would have been completely submerged in darkness had it not been for the lamp that was possibly switched on by Alexis by her side.

It added a soft glow to the room and it was then Evelyn felt eyes on her. She could feel the hair on the back of her head stand up when she felt another presence in the room.

For the moment, it felt like the man that had attacked her from behind it was here that the presence was awfully familiar.

"Salvatore?"

She did not hear anything at first but then there it was. "Yes?’

Since it was confirmed that the person in the room was none other than her husband, Evelyn slowly got up and leaned against the headboard.

He was on the other corner of the room, sitting in a chair with his head tilted upwards to the roof as he appeared to be resting.

"Did I wake you up?"

His Adam’s Apple moved. "No," slowly he opened his eyes and lowered his head to look at her. "I just arrived."

It certainly looks like he did it. The waistcoat he always was missing and so was his tie. The jacket was on the arm of the chair but did not look like it had been carelessly thrown.

She nodded and this time did not hesitate to ask, "did you find him?"

"No,"

Evelyn frowned. "What do you mean?"

Salvatore had briefly closed his eyes but opened them again at her words. "It means I did not find him."

That was exactly what she had just. Was he trying to play with her?

"You do know that someone attacked me in your house—"

"I think I am aware of what happened!" He cut her off sharply. "Do you know I think I know what is going on? You know what is merely happening over the surface. I have to reach deep down and find out so obviously I need some fucking time."

His eyes placed in the inside anger and Evelyn reeled back before looking away. He was angry and the best thing she could do at this point was to silently sit back and let him do his job.

He had not found the person and it was five in the morning meaning that he had arrived in the early hours of morning.

He must’ve spent the entire day that she had missed sorting out the matters yet he had still turned out to be successful and she could understand where His anger was coming.

"Is there a reason why you dropped me here?"

He nodded and did not bother opening his eyes. "I want you to be safe and the only place I could trust you to stay was my parents house."

That xplained a lot.

Evelyn nodded before shifting back on the bed and did not realise when she passed away to sleep because the next time she woke up it was by Alexis and server there was no longer in the room.

"Come on," Alexis tapped her chin, "go brush your teeth and wash our face. After that you can come down for breakfast."

Doing what was our first of her but slower than ever, Evelyn finally made her way out of the bathroom slightly refreshed but in the same clothes.

They all dressed up before breakfast per at times they did show up in night dresses and here Evelyn was not sure if she had anything.

To her surprise Salvatore, Alexis and Angelo were already seated. Salvatore on the other hand was on the side of Angelo where Evelyn would usually sit, meaning she would have to sit next to Salvatore as his wife.

Slowly taking her spot she left the service place food on the table before digging in.

"How is your pain Evelyn?" Alexis’s polite voice delighted Evelyn.

"I’m good now," she nodded but winced slightly. "I think I could use one more painkiller."

Alexis nodded. "I shall hand you one after breakfast."

After that, the dinner had been a silent affair. It was impossible to not glance at the man sitting beside her and it was one or two times when he had actually called her glancing at him.

The moment breakfast was over, Angelo and Alexis left and the young couple was left behind.

"Something you want to ask?" Salvatore turned his neck towards her, angling his face to her. "I was aware of you glancing at me." 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Of course, he was. "How are you aware? Why, were you watching me too?"

"Did I get caught?"

She flushed pink and looked away. He did that on purpose.

"I want to know if you have found something." She admitted. "Was it an inside job?"

He nodded his head. "It looks like it. I would make it clear to you that you are to remain here. Whatever you need, tell one of the maids. My mother did not bother shifting your clothes from your room so you can go back there and find some."

What? He was practically telling her that she was to stake here until further notice. But how did any of that work in her favour?

"You’re going to make me stay here for how long?"

Not wanting to answer here he slid away from the chair and placed it back. "For as long as I deem fit." Giving her a firm look, he moved away from the dining room and exited leaving her behind.

An inside job? Evelyn blinked her eyes, this family was more messed up than her own.
