Chapter 147: The tabloids - II

The next morning she sprang out of the bed and moved towards the living room where she knew would be the latest newspapers. They were always kept there and by the habits salvatore had, it was obvious that this house would have the newspapers there.

Evelyn practically ran downstairs and found the newspapers lying on the coffee table. She grabbed the first one and unfolded it in a wild hurry.

There it was. His predictions from last night were here.

’Salvatore D’alessandro seen walking his secretary to the charity ball—’

’A new arm candy for the multi-millionaire?’

Evelyn flipped the pages.

’An emerald? Speaks volumes!’

’So, where’s the wife? Mrs. Salavtore is said to be blonde.’

There were too many to count. Her eyes roamed over each and everyone roughly just to know what they said.

In the end, Evelyn just folded two papers roughly and put them back on the table before she moved to the stairs.

Just as she turned around to walk upstairs she found Marco standing at the edge of the living room.

"I suppose the tablet and other devices would not be necessary?"

Evelyn gave a soft shake off the head. "No, thank you." She whispered before she moved upstairs slowly and barefoot.

There was nothing she could do about it and that was the reality she had to accept.

She didn’t sleep. It had never been so difficult for her to sleep before but now all she could do was lie on the bed while staring at the ceiling above her.

The tears in her eyes silently left as her eyes merely blinked for them to leave.

There was nothing she could do.

*****

Evelyn found it extremely difficult to fall asleep when she heard the familiar sounds of laughter and the footsteps that crossed her bedroom.

Somehow she knew that her door was locked and the fact that Salvatore did not want her to come out made her feel even more lifeless than before and all she did was continue lying down in the same position on her bed.

A knock came on her door but she closed her eyes. Sleep was almost on its way to her when she heard a gunshot and her eyes snapped open.

Realizing that it was what she thought that she had heard Evelyn got up from the bed and made it closer to the door.

After the first control everything went quiet again making Evelyn place hands on the wooden door and place her ear next to it.

It was also silent and she was afraid that it felt like almost everyone had been frozen to death. It was deadly silent.

It was then when the gunshots began and Evelyn flinched.

The first few shots took a while for her to process before she moved away from the door and stood in the middle of her room panicking inside and out.

"Oh my god.." the words left her mouth in a whisper. The gun shots did not stop and she couldn’t even fantham what was going on outside.

They went on and on and Evelyn stood on the spot wondering what she was supposed to do at this point.

It was like there was an entire war going downstairs, right below her.

But why was it going on in the first place? Salvatore must hav—

A loud banging came on the door. Clearly, someone who was banging aggressively against it before the door knob started to rattle. Now they were pushing their way inside the room but it was locked.

"N-no one’s in!" She muttered out in panic but the banging only increased.

"Don’t think of me as a stupid man, you cunt. Open the door this instant or—" a gun shot rang out in the air silencing the man as she heard a thud.

Without clothes the gunshot had been, Evelyn could not but flinch at the sound of it.

This was bad.

Whatever was happening was happening at her door. On the first floor of the house.

The gunshot still rang out in her ears, tingling from the sound of the loud sound.

She breathed heavily from the aftermath but did not move from her spot that was in the middle of the room and in front of her bed.

She waited as her eyes were trained on the door waiting for it to rattle again for someone to bang on it.

With her gulp, she finally closed her eyes as she released a shaky breath. Her heart pounded furiously in her chest and she actually heard it in her ears.

"My god.." she whispered in her mother tongue. "What in the world.." she cupped her mouth.

Evelyn wanted to cry in helplessness but the best thing to do was to find a safe spot or somewhere, where they all couldn’t reach. That would be the room in the corner but on the contrary, hers was right in front of the stairs.

She needed to get out. To hell with Salvatore, she didn’t know if he would protect her or not. At this point, she was all for herself.

Evelyn walked to the door, still barefooted and in her silk nightie which came down to her knees. She unlocked the door from the inside with a bobby pin, a little trick she learned in the beginning of her house arrest and opened the door from the inside.

The dead man laid on his stomach with a bleeding gunshot wound to his head.

Okay, she chanted in her mind, she could do this. She just had to go to the end of the hallway.

But her eyes remained on the dead man whose eyes were open and had blood pouring out of the hollow spot in the middle of his eyes.

"No.." she whispered to herself, she could not do it.

Just as she began to close her door and walk back inside, someone pulled it open, effectively pulling Evelyn along with it as her hand was still on the door.

"Well hello you," a tatted man crooned out, "You must be the donna then."
