Chapter 272: Chapter 280: You’re back

Opening the main gate, she felt the cold atmosphere of the house hitting her face, and Jane Sampson couldn’t help but sigh standing at the gate entrance.

James Black hadn’t come home yet.

The one-month deadline was up, she hadn’t come back, and neither had he; there wasn’t even a phone call, it seemed he really was infuriated by her.

Dust was visible everywhere in the house; a single touch and there was a layer, obviously, no one had been here this past month.

Exhausted from just getting off the airplane, Jane Sampson didn’t have the energy to clean. She went into the kitchen and gave it a quick clean with her not-so-dexterous left hand.

She was hungry, but didn’t know what to eat, so Jane Sampson decided to just make do with bucket noodles.

The bucket noodles were what she had just brought in from the small grocery store at the community entrance; doing anything with one hand was inconvenient, even boiling water for instant noodles took more time than usual.

After making the noodles and with some extra water left, Jane Sampson poured it into a water cup, intending to drink some hot water first.

Left hand holding the pot, she poured the water.

After pouring, Jane instinctively extended her right hand to grab the cup.

Just as her fingertips touched the edge of the cup, and before she could fully lift it, pain in her right hand made her quickly let go.

Due to the force, the cup fell and crashed at her feet.

Does it hurt?

Seems like it a bit.

But then it seems not at all.

What was truly uncomfortable was her heart.

It was as if, in that moment, a sense of powerlessness suddenly enveloped her, infesting her with negative energy and even starting a cycle of self-loathing.

Jane Sampson, as if stunned, stood still for a long time, not knowing how to move her feet.

After a while, she mocked herself, "I’m really useless," and then resignedly went to the balcony to get a broom and sweep the broken glass off the kitchen floor.

But as the saying goes, misfortune never comes singly. Jane never expected that when she went into the kitchen with the broom, she would accidentally step on a wet spot, slip, and fall backward.

At that moment, fear made Jane Sampson scream. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

And her scream also terrified a person who had just entered the door, who, without even changing out of his leather shoes, rushed into the kitchen.

In the nick of time, James Black barely caught Jane as she fell backward, and next to her left palm, a sharp piece of broken glass was barely a millimeter away.

The sight of her falling was enough to terrify James Black.

He didn’t dare to think what would have happened if he had been even a second later; Jane would have fallen directly onto the pile of broken glass, and her palm would probably have been pierced.

Jane, still shaken, leaned on James Black’s knee, her waist embraced by his strong arms.

"Where did you hurt yourself?" James Black directly picked her up from the kitchen and placed her on the sofa in the living room, only then aware that Jane’s right hand was bandaged, and the tops of her feet, still in slippers, were red, looking like a burn injury, but thankfully not too serious, with no blistering. He checked her soles for any cuts from the glass, and only when he saw there were none did he place her feet onto the sofa.

"James Black!" Jane gradually came back to her senses, and looking at the person crouched down checking her feet, she tugged at James’s sleeve, her voice tinged with barely concealed joy, "James, you’re back! I was so scared just now, thank goodness you were here!"

This must have been the first time James Black felt Jane’s joy at seeing him, and he wasn’t sure if she was more happy about his return, or relieved that he had rescued her in the nick of time.
