Chapter 460: Are You Avoiding Me?

Since then, Ku Jin, that mad dog, no longer bothered He Juan, and he could finally pour all of his focus on their upcoming raid.

Similar to the other secret facilities they had destroyed before, this one also located in a deserted area near a range of mountains, where various industrial factories were scattered. It masqueraded as a research institute specializing in Alzheimer’s, allowing it to operate undetected for an extended period. The only noticeable distinction was the presence of an electric fence and round-the-clock patrols with security dogs. If one did not know better, they would have thought that this was a military base camp.

While they could handle the electric fence, the real challenge lay in dealing with the armed guards and the trained security dogs.

During the month-long investigation, Marius tried various methods to gather inside information to no avail. Bribing or sending spies did not work either, as the security in the building was so airtight that not even a mosquito could fly in at will. They could not afford to raise any suspicion, so Marius could only abandon those avenues.

It was a hassle to organize the plans, but at the same time, it also gave them the confirmation that this secret facility was more special than others. Perhaps they could even find detrimental and solid evidence inside, which could bring this repulsive experiment to a stop once and for all.

For this, Marius, He Juan and Ye Qiu often brainstormed until late into the night. They analyzed the building’s blueprints, security shifts, and identified the optimal path for a successful break-in. Moreover, He Juan and Marius also had to smuggle firearms into the country and carefully select the people who would join them on the mission.

He Juan became so engrossed in the preparations that he did not even have the time to visit home. He still tried to call Mu Yuze every once in a few days, but as the raid date approached, he slowly ceased all contact for fear of being distracted. Lastly, he sent Mu Yuze a simple message, telling him that he would be occupied with the business trip and would not be able to respond for the next few days. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

When he sent that message, He Juan felt a sharp pinch in his heart, especially when he recalled how the boy would always inquire about his return during their phone calls.

Every time he sensed Mu Yuze’s disappointment whenever he explained that he still could not return yet, he wished he could drop everything and fly to Mu Yuze’s side at once. They had not seen each other for almost a month now. He Juan thought he would go crazy with how much he was missing the boy, considering the fact that he had not been home often since Mu Yuze manifested as an omega.

Guilt prickled He Juan’s heart. Technically he had not lied about being busy, but it was not to the point where he could not free one or two hours to visit home, even if it was in the middle of the night. It was cowardly of him, he knew. He simply had not made up his mind about how to act around Mu Yuze just yet.

A few days more... he convinced himself. A few days more and I will not run away anymore.

Little did He Juan know, with each word and message expressing his regret for being unable to return home, Mu Yuze’s heart sank deeper and deeper.

With his sharp observational skill and keen intuition, he could sense that He Juan was deliberately putting some distance between them.

Sitting on the bed, he tossed the phone to the side and counted with his fingers. "Twenty two days... it has been twenty two days but Juan-gege has only come home twice."

The first time was the day after his manifestation when He Juan bought him cakes, then the second time was when they made a trip to the hospital to make sure that Mu Yuze’s gland was developing properly, and also to stock up on blankets and beddings for his nest. Even then, these two occasions were only two days apart, meaning he had not seen He Juan’s face in eighteen days!

Mu Yuze’s expression grew somber. Certainly, this was not the first time He Juan had ever gone on a long business trip. Sometimes, he might even take one month or two, but this time, Mu Yuze couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was amiss.

For instance, the decreasing frequency of phone calls.

At first, he thought that He Juan might be injured and deliberately hid it from him. But as days passed, his suspicion slowly shifted to— what if He Juan only wanted to avoid him? Of course, the main reason was because he had suddenly turned into an omega, but... what if... what if he already found a partner out there, and that’s why he could not come home as often anymore?

Unbidden, Mu Yuze found his mind drifting to that night in Twilight Haven. Amidst the colorful and flashing lights, the pretty and delicate omega was sitting on He Juan’s lap with his arms wrapped around He Juan’s neck, painting a sexy and ambiguous picture.

Mu Yuze had not brought up this matter before— or to be exact, he did not dare to. But it did not mean he had forgotten. The image would always pop up in his mind at random times, and it became more and more frequent with each day of He Juan’s absence. And every time he recalled it, he would be filled with so much jealousy that he almost burst out into tears.

Both of them were Omegas, but why had He Juan never looked his way even once?

Was it because he was too ugly, too taciturn and aloof? Was it because he did not know how to be coquettish like any other omegas? Or was it because the scent of his pheromones was not as pleasant and sweet?

Once these poisonous thoughts entered his mind, Mu Yuze found himself helpless to root it out. It plagued him each minute and hour, until one day, he finally could not bear it anymore and sent He Juan one simple message,

[Gege, are you avoiding me?]

The day Mu Yuze sent that message happened to coincide with the day of the raid. When He Juan received it, he was sitting on the backseat of the car heading toward the mountainous range.

His fingers tightened around the phone and a painful lump formed in his throat. Of course, Mu Yuze would realize it. He was such a sharp and intelligent boy, so it was no wonder that he could sense He Juan’s alienation. The longer he stared at the screen, he seemed to see the hurt in the boy’s eyes and the mere notion that Mu Yuze might be crying because of him made him feel so horrible that he wanted to stab himself with a knife.

"XIU?" Sensing that his expression did not look right, Marius inquired with concern, "Is everything alright?"

He Juan took a deep breath and shoved his phone into his pocket, shaking his head. "Nothing."

’Soon,’ he silently reassured the imaginary Mu Yuze in his mind. ’Gege will be home soon. Let’s talk later, okay?’
