Chapter 277: 277: A Noble Meeting

Queen Elizabeth had already washed up. Her lady-in-waiting helped her get dressed into an elegant red attire. One that screamed power and royalty. One she would wear for an extremely important event.

She sat before the full-length mirror as her lady-in-waiting helped style her hair.

The Lady-in-waiting stared at her face through the mirror as she asked, "The throne isn’t a fun place to sit. Are you sure about it?"

But Queen Elizabeth smiled. "I’ve been planning this for years. Why wouldn’t I be sure? Besides, if it’s not a fun place, I’ll make it fun then," she said confidently as the Lady-in-waiting smiled.

"Then I’ll stand by you till the end, My Queen," the Lady-in-waiting expressed.

Just then, a knock came on the door.

"Come in," Queen Elizabeth permitted as a guard walked in. "What is it?" she stared at him.

"They have summoned you," was all he needed to say, and they already knew what he meant. Queen Elizabeth nodded with a smile as the guard left.

The Lady-in-waiting stared at her. "Will you be okay? Those men can be cunning and evil."

"But I’m more evil," Queen Elizabeth said with a smile. "They can’t take down the devil, can they?" She said as she got up to her feet. "I’ll be back. So don’t worry."

She said as she left the room.

The men of the court had already summoned Queen Elizabeth after gathering.

They were in the Royal meeting hall. All had taken their seats while they discussed. They had a lot to say about everything that was happening.

"How is all this even possible? This is madness!" one said.

"The king is dead? Just like that? And the Queen wants to take the throne! That’s atrocious!"

"Exactly. We can’t sit back and watch it happen at all!" another expressed.

"A monster like her doesn’t even belong in this place at all. She took down her husband and now wants the throne. How evil!"

"We should make sure we uproot her before she tries anything. A scheming evil woman like her deserves hell."

They had already agreed in unison and discussed how to take down Queen Elizabeth before she did anything.

And just as they discussed, the Royal messenger announced the arrival of Queen Elizabeth.

They all turned and watched as Queen Elizabeth walked into the Royal Meeting Hall. All was silent as they watched her majestically step into the hall room in her red elegant dress. Two guards followed behind her.

They watched her make her way to the seat where King Edward was supposed to sit. A place made for the ruler.

"How audacious!"

"How dare you even sit there! Have you lost it!"

They all wanted to protest, but the guards pulled out their swords, ready to strike down any of them who spoke further.

Immediately the men kept mute. They cleared their throats as they stared at each other.

Queen Elizabeth smiled as she said, "How sad. None of you even bothered greeting me. That’s disrespectful." She stared at the golden rings on her fingers.

One scoffed. "And why would we bow down to a woman like you? What do you think you are? The king’s husband?"

"Late," Queen Elizabeth smiled. "Late King’s husband. Be accurate with your news."

They glared at her with contempt. Watching her speak calmly with confidence had them all losing it.

"And so? Why do we need to greet someone like you then?" one questioned.

Elizabeth smiled. "Don’t you need to welcome your new ruler?"

They scoffed while muttering to themselves for a while.

"New ruler my foot? What do you think you are? What makes you think a woman like you can sit on the throne as she pleases?"

"That’s atrocious. And you should know your place. Even if the kingdom was coming to an end, we would never consider having you take that throne."

"That would be a disgrace to our kingdom. It’s never happened before."

"Exactly. So don’t dream too much, lady!" one said, using lady in a derogatory term.

The guard pulled his sword, but Queen Elizabeth stopped him.

"What? Threatening to kill me? Why don’t you?" he snapped.

"Besides, how can you claim to want to ascend the throne immediately when we haven’t even discussed the death of the late king?"

"Exactly."

"It’s still a mystery how the King suddenly passed away," one said while looking at the others. They all nodded.

"Truly an open mystery," they stared at Queen Elizabeth. "Don’t you think you need to give some explanations, at least?"

Queen Elizabeth smiled calmly as she stared at them. "So what are you all insinuating? That I killed my husband to take the throne?"

"I mean, that’s not exactly far-fetched. We all saw you stab him at the Banquet."

"Yes. And you were the last person who met him before his death. So that should say a lot," they all agreed.

Queen Elizabeth smiled. "Sure. That should say a lot. But it sadly doesn’t." She sighed. "You said you saw me stab him? What proof do you have?"

"Do we even need proof? We saw it."

"No, you didn’t," Queen Elizabeth stared at them. "Almost everyone sitting here wasn’t even in the room when it happened. And the few who were only saw it from a distance. You didn’t see it up close, so you don’t even know if it was my hands that pulled the sword from him."

And she was sure of what she said. Some didn’t attend the event. Most who did had already run off when it got chaotic before this happened. And the few had seen everything from behind. So they weren’t good as eyewitnesses.

The only person who saw it up close was Queen Lea. But Elizabeth already had her under control and knew how to make her shut up for good.

Elizabeth knew if she covered all this up now, later no one would even believe Lea if she spoke up. The king was dead and she would only sound crazy.

And as Queen Elizabeth said that, they were quiet for a while.

But they continued.

"You still stabbed him, and that remains the fact."

"I didn’t," she said calmly. "And you can’t accuse me when you don’t even have solid evidence. You didn’t even see my hands. So why are you sitting here making up a whole story?"

She smiled as she spoke. Now she was playing with their heads in the best way possible.
