Beastmen: She Tames the Land-Chapter 215: The second day
Things were much easier on the second day. There was no need to search for their stall. They only needed to bring their wares, and others would come to them. Visha warned the tribe members not to trade everything all at once, and then the trio ventured out.
They also sent out people to look for new and exciting things. They were not required to buy them. Only to relay the information, and they would come to take a look.
"If you find anything you don’t understand, call through the pack-link. Your leaders and I will be there."
When everything was assigned, Visha walked with Uri and Xeno to different stalls. They walked leisurely, not appearing deliberate in their search. They walked, talked, and laughed. They listened to the conversation from the various tribes about their goods.
Some were cooking their specialties, hoping to trade food for items. Some had animal hides. Others had a variety of fungi. It reminded Visha of the time they spent in the grotto where almost everything was a kind of fungi.
Today, she was looking for grain. She didn’t use Commune to search. The things were already on the surface. Using it would only make her find things quicker. There was an entire month, she didn’t need to.
She actually didn’t need to go far to find what she needed. Not long after stepping out of their own sphere, they found a quiet corner. Their display was full of legumes and grains. She hadn’t expected it would be so easy to find these things.
She saw beans, peas, wheat, bulgur, oats, and corn. While she was happy to see all these, she was a little sad because, despite having all these, there was no rice. Not even brown rice.
Regardless, these things were valuable to them now. This would give them a variety of foods to eat.
Visha walked over to the stall; the beastmen and females there had a look of dejection on their faces. Visha wondered why, but didn’t ask.
She approached the older male, giving a sign of respect.
"Hello, we would like to trade with you. Would that be possible?"
The beastman looked at her as though she had three heads. He looked between Uri and Xeno. Visha misunderstanding though there was something wrong.
"Aren’t you trading?"
"No, no, trade... definitely trade."
The smile that bloomed on their faces made Visha wonder if they didn’t know the value of the things they carried with them.
"Then, why do you look like someone stole your cub?" Xeno had no qualms in asking. He could also see their dejection, and he was curious.
Pursing his lips, he furrowed his brows. He appeared resistant to speaking. It was a female behind him who spoke up.
"These things...are you sure you want them?"
"Of course, why wouldn’t we?"
Her smile became wider. She pulled on the arm of a beastman beside her.
"I told you someone would want them."
From the statement, Visha thought of a possibility. They either had too many of these things or they themselves didn’t eat them. They were testing their luck when they brought them out to trade.
"Do you not eat these?"
Seeing how straightforward the female was being, Visha decided it would be best if they spoke frankly with each other.
The older beastman, who had pursed his lips, glared at the female who smiled.
"We do eat them. But there are too many. They grow in groves in our homeland. They always die before we can eat them and then produce more. We have no way to get rid of them. If we try to trade, people don’t come for them again after the first trade."
Visha found it strange. With enough of any of these, they don’t need to go hungry. Why would a tribe not want to eat them, especially during winter? These things could tide them over.
Do they not know how to eat them?
"If you don’t mind me asking, how do you normally eat this?" She pointed to the wheat.
"We boil it. Everything here is just boiled."
"You don’t remove the shell?" Her eyes found their way to the green peas, then back to the unshelled wheat.
"The shell?"
Visha took up some wheat, crushed it lightly, and removed the shell.
"This is what you should be eating."
Their faces lit up when they saw the difference. They had been eating it wrong this entire time. When the shell would scratch their throat, they would just continue eating. They didn’t want to starve.
Visha shook her head mentally. She knew the people on this planet were strong. There was rarely any sickness. But she hadn’t realized their stomachs were so strong, too.
She talked to them for a while longer, trying to figure out if they had any other legumes or grains, and found this was what they normally had.
She wasn’t very disappointed. She could use the corn to make cornmeal. She could grind the wheat to make flour. Though they already had flour, it didn’t mean they couldn’t have multiple types. This one would be better at making noodles than the other.
For this trade, they used flour and spices as trade items. They taught them how to knead the dough. Teaching them didn’t cost anything, and unless they found a way to make flour at the festival, their business would be secure.
Not long after completing that trade, they received a link from two different pack members. One reported a green thing that he was told was edible. He didn’t dare choose without showing them.
The other said they found soft clothes. Visha decided she would take a look at the ’green thing,’ and she sent Uri and Xeno to check on the soft clothes.
They had spent enough time with her that they should be able to identify certain things. She had only talked about it, but she gave enough of a description that they should be able to make judgment calls.
