Chapter 692: A battle of ’welcome’

[Host, you could contract the job to the grandmasters since they work independently in some cases. The council does not control every job they take on. The cost will be high, but like you said, you are a wealthy heiress. A small fraction of the Raine fortune your grandfather left will cover it.] The system suggested.

Sunshine’s face brightened as she immediately asked Vortan if it was possible. "I will pay them quite well; in whatever currency they desire."

Vortan let out a loud sigh. "I do not think that there would be any grandmaster that would take such a risky job without the council’s protection. Remember that whoever is going the close the rifts is going to piss off the Xylas, they will hunt them, kill off generations just to take revenge. No one wants that. The council is needed, whether you like it or not."

"So that is a dead end as well?" Nine asked, tossing the beef jerky aside

"I suggest you talk to the council. Maybe if you could trade something valuable, they would maybe give you grandmasters to repair the sky under their protection." Vortan suggested. "They will provide a million robots and grand warriors to protect a single grand master repairman."

Sunshine arched an eyebrow, a spark of her old defiance returning. "Trade something, huh? The Council likes shiny things, I presume."

Vortan shrugged. "They like leverage. And they like things that shouldn’t exist. But to get involved in your war, it must be something quite worth it."

Sunshine smirked. She had a feeling she might have something exactly like that. She asked the system quietly, ’System, make the request right now."

[Processing... Request for Council Hearing initiated. Standing by for a response.]

"Thank you," Sunshine muttered.

Without wasting time, Vortan began the training. He cleared the hologram, replacing the map with a simulation of a swirling, dark nebula. He showed her how to position her hands, how to draw the ’static’ from the air without letting it ground through her feet.

"Focus, Sunshine," Vortan commanded. "The air is not your enemy. It is your tool. Feel the friction."

Sunshine stood in the center of the room, her eyes closed, trying to feel the invisible threads of energy. She felt a tingle in her fingertips, a sharp snap of electricity.

"Alright," she yelped, shaking her hand.

Nine sat on a nearby crate, having found a bag of what looked like dehydrated space-marshmallows. "You’re leaning too far left," he said through a mouthful of sugar. "You look like a lopsided duck. And your timing was off. The ’snap’ happened, and you were still busy blinking."

"I don’t see you standing in the lightning, Nine!" Sunshine snapped, though she adjusted her stance. "Just leave."

"I’m the support team, remember?" Nine grinned, pointing a marshmallow at her. "You need me here."

Vortan ignored the banter. "Again," he barked. "Control the discharge. If you let it flicker, the lightning will bite back."

Sunshine took a deep breath, visualizing the sky. She imagined the jagged tear over the earth and the raw, wild power of a thunderstorm. She wasn’t just a girl in a dusty room anymore. She was a binder.

"Again," Vortan said, his voice softer this time, almost encouraging. "Keep in mind that you won’t be using lightning alone. You will have to project a nano cloud or use an energy net to weld the rift closed."

Sunshine raised her hands, the blue light of the hologram reflecting in her determined eyes. She had a world to sew back together, and she wasn’t going to let a little thing like ’Total Sky Collapse’ stand in her way.

"This is easy!" Nine shouted, "Why can’t you get it right."

"Nine," she said, without looking back.

"Yeah, Suni?"

"If I accidentally turn you into a frog with this lightning, I’m not apologizing."

Nine laughed. "I’d make a very handsome frog. Now, focus! You missed the spark again!" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

"Focus!" Vortan barked like a drill sergeant, "Again!"

The Dragonfly aircraft hovered over New Eden, silent and invisible. Thanks to its cloaking tech, the people below had no idea a massive warship was sitting right over their heads.

"Sir, we are waiting for your orders," Major Elio said, checking his dragonoid.

Dr. Roy grabbed Hades’ arm, his eyes wide and pleading. "Hades, look at them! You have to help. These people are being slaughtered!"

Hades let out a low, annoyed growl. "Of all the times to arrive... we show up in the middle of a zoo breakout from hell." He looked through the floor monitors. Below, gorillas the size of SUVs were tearing New Eden apart. These weren’t normal apes; their eyes glowed with a sickly red light, and they were tossing New Eden’s ’superhumans’ around like rag dolls. One hero tried to throw a fireball, but a gorilla simply swatted him into a brick wall.

One of this kind had tried to attack their fortress before, the previous year and ended up being blown to pieces.

"Fine," Hades snapped. "We go down. But the Dragonfly stays up here. I’m not risking the ship for a few monkeys."

As the squad jumped, the last thing Hades heard over the comms was Caesar’s whining voice. "Hey! What about me? What if those things get us up here?"

"Shut up, Caesar!" Nusra barked. She was stuck inside the ship to watch him, and she was clearly fuming. "I’m missing all the fun because I have to babysit your stupid ass. One more word and I’ll throw you out without a parachute."

Carson turned back quickly, smiling like he approved of the idea. Ceaser shuddered and closed his mouth for the sake of his own safety.

"With me, Carson." Hades growled.

The Fortress Four squad didn’t just land; they crashed into the pavement like gods. As their exo-suits hummed to life, the mutated gorillas turned, their eyes "spilling" red lasers that melted everything.

"Watch out for the lasers!" Elio shouted. "These are mutants, not mutated."

The fight was a slaughter, but not for the humans. Hades tossed an acid bomb. It burst over a gorilla’s shoulder, turning its thick hide into hissing soup. The beast wailed, a sound that shook the windows of nearby car.

Both Morris and Poncho pulled out vibrating high-frequency swords. They blurred past a charging beast, and a second later, the massive gorilla fell in two perfectly sliced halves, its laser-eyes flickering out like broken light bulbs.

Major Elio hovered in the air and shot a bullet which punched through a gorilla’s chest and exploded as it went out the back. The beast didn’t even have time to scream. The invisible team was busy too; the gorillas never saw them coming.
