Chapter 170: Chapter 170 Trapped

Ling Xuan let go of the vine. "Run!" She said as she swung her sword in a circular motion cutting the vines.

"Thank you, commander." The soldier said, before lifting his gun, shooting his way out towards the other soldiers who were moving out.

The soldiers continued retreating, dragging the wounded as they fired, while the ground kept collapsing in uneven patches wherever the vines forced their way through.

Ling Xuan stepped forward again to buy them time, her gaze fixed ahead as another vine shot upward from below, and she blocked it before pushing it aside, her footing steady even as the soil beneath her dipped.

Then another came toward her from the side...

"Watch out!"

A force slammed into her.

Chris.

But at the same moment, Alexander grabbed her arm, pulling her with him as the ground beneath them gave way without warning.

The soil collapsed between them and the others, and all three lost their footing as they fell into the hole.

"Ahhhh!" Their cry tore through the air.

Ling Xuan’s eyes widened as the vines followed after them, forcing their way through the collapsing soil as if they refused to let them escape.

Chris and Alexander reacted immediately, raising their guns as they fired downward, the gunshots echoing sharply as the bullets tore through the vines that reached toward them, snapping some apart while others continued to push forward.

The three of them fell hard on the ground.

The impact knocked the breath out of them as they landed on uneven ground below, the air damp and heavy as water dripped steadily from the rocks above, forming small puddles in the muddy earth beneath them.

Ling Xuan landed on top of them. For a brief moment, her body stilled as realization dawned on her.

Then she pushed herself up immediately as if she was scalded by them. She kept her expression straight as if it had never happened, her grip tightening around her sword as her gaze snapped upward.

The opening above was no longer clear as loose soil and broken ground blocked most of the light, leaving only faint shadows filtering through.

The vines forced their way down through the cracks, dragging dirt and debris with them as they lashed out violently.

"Move," Ling Xuan said.

She stepped forward without hesitation, her sword cutting through the first vine that came at her, the blade slicing cleanly as the severed piece dropped into the mud.

Chris and Alexander fired again, covering the space around them as more vines pushed through, their movements sharp and aggressive as they struck toward them.

Ling Xuan shifted her footing slightly, the mud beneath her sinking just enough to make her adjust, but it did not slow her as she cut through another vine, then another, her movements precise despite the muddy ground.

A vine shot toward her from above. She swiftly raised her sword and blocked it before cutting it down in one motion.

Another came from the side.

Alexander fired, the bullet tearing through it before it could reach her.

Chris stepped back slightly, his gaze sweeping the area as he fired again, keeping the vines from closing in on them.

The space around them was dark and the ground was uneven with thick mud. Even the air was thick with dampness.

Ling Xuan stepped on the wall, pushing herself into the air. She swung her blade through the vines, slicing them as if they were noodles. She backflipped in the air, as she stepped on the rocky wall closer to her swiftly moving her sword again, cutting through them. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

One by one, the vines dropped to the ground, writhing before going still.

The last one dropped with a loud thud, splashing the mud slightly.

Silence followed, thick and suffocating.

Only the sound of water dripping echoed through the space.

Ling Xuan lowered her sword slightly, her gaze lifting toward the opening above before she called out, "Hello! Anyone there?!."

There was no answer. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she stepped closer to the wall, looking up again.

The sky was no longer visible, only the muddy earth and rock.

She couldn’t hear any movement or voices.

Her brows knitted together, as she observed the rocky wall. Then shifted her footing and jumped, reaching for the edge, but the mud on the wall made it difficult for her to hold on to the rock, forcing her to land back down.

Her gaze hardened. "Impossible," she muttered under her breath. Not only was she trapped, but she was trapped with the two people she hated the most.

Alexander let out a sharp breath, his expression darkening as he turned toward Chris. "If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t be down here. I already held her, there was no need for you to push her back."

Chris snapped immediately, his voice no longer calm. "I already pushed her away from the danger, you didn’t have to pull her back."

"That doesn’t change the fact that you..."

Ling Xuan’s brows furrowed as she looked up again, her thoughts moving quickly as she tried to find a way out, but the more she observed, the clearer it became that climbing back up was not an option.

The soldiers... She did not know if they had made it out or if they were still fighting the strange vines.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

Behind her, the argument continued to grow louder.

"You always act like you know what you’re doing..."

"Of course, I know what I’m doing, unlike you, whose actions are driven by jealousy," Chris said, regaining his calm composure again.

Ling Xuan’s expression darkened. Before either of them could continue...

Two daggers sliced through the air.

Chris’s eyes widened slightly when he saw the daggers flying towards them, a dangerous glint flashed in his eyes but he did not move away, and pretended he was carried away by the argument.

The daggers lodged on the rocks behind them with a sharp sound.

Alexander and Chris froze in their spot.

They slowly lowered their heads only to find their clothes sliced open. The blades had missed their bodies by a narrow margin.

Ling Xuan turned her head slightly, her gaze cold as it swept over them.

"Shut up," she said.
