Chapter 45: Chapter 45

Kai POV

Alpha Gregory must have sensed that his story had a lot of loopholes so he was trying his best to make up for it.

“You may not believe this Alpha Kai, but once, Lily tried to poison me,” he started, his tone growing sombre. “I mean you’d never expect that something like that would come from your house but it happened. She put an adequate amount of grounded silver in my food and it was my favourite food, so I was never going to notice, thankfully, it fell from the table somehow and you know what Silver does to wood right?”

He leaned in and said with a conspiratory tone “It burned a hole so deep in the wood that I had to change the entire floorboard of the dining room. There was another time when it was arsenic and I survived by a hair’s breadth but back then, I was able to endure it because I was her daughter and every parent loved their children right?” he sighed.

“But then she became even worse. She got in between her sister here,” he stopped and pointed at his other daughter sitting next to him with her gaze downwards. She hasn’t said a word since their arrival. “And her sister’s mate. She tried to seduce him but thankfully, he loved her sister so much but that’s just the least of the things she had done. Wherever she goes, it’s always one problem or the other and there’s always a limit one can take for things like this right?”

“I wouldn’t know, Alpha Gregory,” I said with a sarcastic tone. “I’ve never been married and I don’t have children.”

“She continued to cause problems in the pack. Most of all the fights, the quarrels, and the disputes are always linked to Lily and as the Alpha, I got tired of judging these problems and always letting her go because she would never survive in the dungeon but then the people began to complain...”

I found my attention drifting as Alpha Gregory’s words washed over me, sounding like a clang of empty timbrels. I had long stopped believing all the words coming out of his mouth because they were nothing but pure lies. Since Lily started staying with us at Royal Hunters, Celeste – my sister has told me on more than one occasion that she was a perfect guest.

Always made sure things were right and was extremely shy but the person Alpha Gregory was describing, was in no way related to the Lily I have come to know. My gaze drifted around the room suddenly landing on the girl – Alpha Gregory’s daughter – Lily’s so-called sister staring at me.

I‘d noticed that she’d been stealing glances at me but I didn’t think too much of it. But when our eyes met now, she immediately looked down, her eyes darting away as if she was caught doing something wrong, her cheeks turning red.

Interesting! Was she checking to see if I believed all of her father’s tales? Or was there something else going on?

Outside the cottage, thunder and lightning were rumbling and then without warning, it started raining. The rain pelted on the roof of the cottage with vengeance, accompanied by the distant but loud rumble of thunder. I felt my mood darkening as the growing storm continued outside.

The more I listened to Alpha Gregory talk, the more I wanted to reach for his neck and choke him until his tongue fell off. I was growing irritated every passing second and I was really trying my best – all the years of training discipline not to reach across the table and give Alpha Gregory a very dirty slap.

My mind drifted to Lily and I felt my heart clench with pity. How had she survived in a family like this? With a father like this? A father who was comfortable spinning lies about his daughter, a sister who was the picture perfect of innocence but I knew appearances can be deceiving.

How had she survived all their manipulations and betrayals? The thought of it alone, the injustice of what she might have been through made my blood boil and my wolf growl with annoyance. I could feel anger slowly building in my chest.

The more I listened and watched the duo, the more irritated I felt. I began to grow restless. To tap my feet consistently... Someone, please tell this man to shut up! I growled within myself.

Thankfully, Kai must have sensed my growing agitation, so he took over the entire conversation, making Gregory focus on him.

“That must have been very difficult for you and your pack to deal with Alpha,” Liam said. “How did you manage to resolve the situation?”

Gregory loved talking and this was a perfect opportunity for him to spin more lies of things that never happened. He launched into another perfect tale of how he resolved the issue, while I drummed my hand silently on the arm of my chair. My eyes were at the window, drawn to where the lightning was constantly flashing in the sky.

Suddenly, I felt the pull of a mindlink, requesting access to me. Only a few people in the pack had access to Mindlink me directly. From what I discovered it was one of the senior-ranking warriors in the pack.

He knows better than to be requesting for a mindlink when he knows I was in the middle of an important meeting. I decided I was not going to answer him. So I ignored it at first but the connection kept ringing which was unusual too. On second thought, I decided to let him in. It might be important.

With a mental sigh, I opened the link.

“Report!” I commanded.

The response came immediately. The voice of the Senior Warrior filled with relief as he spoke.

“Alpha, your sister, Miss Celeste has been trying to send you a message but it’s not been going through. So, she asked me to tell you that Lily is about to shift.” 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

Without thinking, I shot up from my seat.
