Chapter 29: Friendly And Unfamiliar Faces

KALIA

"I’m ready." I announced and he blinked hard, almost dropping his cell phone. He was clad in a black suit too.

I wondered if we were going to a Black party? I could tell that he was both proud and surprised.

I’m also surprised. I can’t believe that I was pulling off the new look. "Does it look okay?"

"You really look like an Alpha’s soon-to-be wife, now." He complimented but I only smile. I was certain that he was only saying that to boost my confidence.

Not knowing how to reply to that kind of compliment, I only said ’thank you’.

"Great! let’s go" He held out his hands to me and I took it. I followed him outside to where the car was parked. He opened the door and I got next to him before Charles took the wheel.

As soon as we started the journey, I began to regret agreeing to this. I wanted nothing more than to go back home but I had already given him my word and I wouldn’t want to break it or back out no matter what.

"The dinner is just for a few hours. We’ll be out of there in no time." He assured me.

"Okay then." I replied with a faux smile.

Darren was on his phone all through the drive and I was grateful so that he didn’t notice how scared I was at that moment.

I have never attended a function let alone with a man. This was my first and official event with him as a fake couple it scared me to bits.

It was like I was going on my very first blind date to meet a complete stranger that I had met once over facetime.

When they got to the location of the party, Darren faced me. "Before we get out of this car, I want you to know that you are the most beautiful woman that I have ever set my eyes on so do not let anyone else tell you otherwise."

"You are not worthless Kalia and you have as much right to be here just like everyone in attendance. Don’t forget that." He added and stepped out of the car.

He opened the door for me and we both walked in, hand in hand.

The paparazzi at the party tried to get a photo of us. Darren wrapped his hands around my waist and pulled me closer to his side possessively.

After taking photos, we got inside and tried to mingle with the other guests. Halfway inside, we sighted Callum and Celyn together holding hands and chatting away just like everyone.

The nerve of this man to openly display his stupid relationship like nothing happened after everything that he had done to me.

We lock eyes briefly and I could tell that he was utterly shocked to see me here. I for one, never wanted to see him tonight at all.

"Are you okay?" Darren leaned in to ask me and I smilingly nodded a yes.

"Can I use the restroom? I’ll be back in a bit." I noticed that Celyn was stealing glances at us so I seized the opportunity and kissed him on the cheeks before excusing myself.

I got to the restroom after asking around for a bit. I felt very nauseous and out of place here. What was the point of all these social gatherings anyway?

After washing my hands to pass time, I stood for a few minutes to catch my breath. Just then, the door burst open and a woman rushed towards the sink to wipe off her wine stained dress.

I felt bad for her. If I were in her place then I would’ve wished to die rather than to do the walk of shame in front of all the strange faces gathered here.

"Here, let me help" I offered as I wet my napkin to help clean off the lady’s stained dress.

"Oh!" The lady exclaimed in surprise, "Thank you so very much."

I wiped the stain carefully. Deep down, I was happy to be held here rather than going outside there to face the wolves.

"There, all done." I announced when I had finished with her dress.

"Thank you so much. You’re a life saver." The lady thanked me with a heartfelt gratitude.

"My name is Liana Diaz." She offered, extending her hands to me for a handshake.

"Um, Kalia." I replied, taking them.

I was confused. I didn’t know if I should go with my name or Darren’s name. This is why you don’t propose a contract marriage. Everything felt confusing sometimes.

"It’s nice to see women helping other women. That’s what the world should be all about."

"I know right." I chimed in, happy that the lady was very friendly. If only most women could think the way she did. I mean, my stepsister did betray me by sleeping with my ex-fiancé behind my back so what’s new?

"Why are you cooped up here instead of the party?"

"Er..." I stammered "I’m not used to being amongst crowds."

Liana laughed "How about you walk with me then?" She offered. "The night will be less boring if you’re with me rather than here all alone in this restroom."

I thought about her offer for a while before nodding in affirmation. When we got outside, I was surprised to see Darren waiting for me. The minute he spotted us, he stormed towards me in haste.

"Where did you go?" He asked desperately "I’ve been searching for you everywhere. You said to use the restroom but you just disappeared. Are you okay?"

"I did use the restroom and then I met a friend too." I answered calmly and pointed towards the woman that was standing beside me.

It’s not my fault that I had been hiding in the restroom. I wasn’t used to crowds. They scared me and tonight’s crowd was worse because I was in the company of the rich and elite, something that every Omegas would only dream of.

Even when my father hosted parties, I sat on the sidelines or watched from the shadows because he wasn’t too thrilled introducing me to the world as his elder daughter.

I definitely wasn’t anticipating this when I signed that contract but of course, I can’t avoid it now even if I wanted to.

"Good evening Mr. Darren."

Darren was shocked. He must have never expected her to know his name.

"I’m sorry but do I know you?" He questioned politely, trying to recall where he had met her perhaps.

"Probably not. My name is Liana Diaz." She introduced herself with a smile. "Thanks for coming to my party."
