Chapter 138: More durian!

"Of course," Nina said with a smile.

Ming extended his arms but hesitated for a moment, unsure which cub to pick up first. In the end, he simply swept all four of them into his embrace at once.

Holding the cubs close, he beamed so broadly his eyes nearly disappeared in the wrinkles of his smile.

Reaching into his storage space, he produced a pile of high-grade beast crystals and spirit stones, handing them out to the cubs.

"Here," he said warmly. "These are gifts from Grandpa."

He then took out another handful and passed them to Nina.

"Nina, these are for the cubs that haven’t hatched yet. And these are for you—just a small greeting gift."

The cubs turned to look at Nina.

Without their mother’s approval, they wouldn’t accept any gifts.

Nina shook her head politely. "That’s not necessary. These are far too valuable."

"It’s fine. Please accept them—it’s only proper."

When Nina still looked hesitant, Ming deliberately added, "Or is it that you still haven’t forgiven my earlier offense?"

"That’s not it," Nina replied helplessly, finally accepting the gifts.

The cubs immediately broke into delighted smiles as they accepted the beast crystals and spirit stones.

"Thank you, Grandpa!"

Nina couldn’t help laughing.

Such little treasure hoarders.

Ming chuckled happily. "You’re welcome! Grandpa has plenty more good things in his storage space. I’ll give you more later."

The cubs became even happier, instantly growing much closer to him.

Seeing that it was getting late, Nina decided it was time to return to the tribe.

Meanwhile, Silinx went off to gather the other spirit-cat warriors.

When they arrived back at the tribe, Nina arranged several spare rooms for Ming and his group.

Mino glanced around and noticed that all the rooms closest to Nina were already occupied. A trace of disappointment crossed his face.

Then, as he passed one empty room, he caught a familiar scent in the air—a faint wolf smell.

Is this Yanai’s room?

His eyes lit up instantly.

"Nina, could I stay in this room?"

Nina remembered that he and Yanai had once lived together before. Besides, no one knew whether Yanai would even return.

"That’s fine," she said.

Mino happily moved into Yanai’s old room.

That stupid wolf is actually useful for once. This room was much closer to Nina’s than the others.

Ming casually chose another room for himself, while the remaining ones were reserved for Silinx and the other spirit-cat warriors.

Later, Ming played with the cubs in the courtyard.

From time to time, he would pull out more treasures from his storage space and give them to the little ones.

By the time dinner approached, the cubs ran back into the house with their arms full—so laden with treasures that they looked like tiny walking treasure racks. Even the egg-cubs were decorated with little trinkets.

When Nina saw them, she burst out laughing.

"You little rascals... are you planning to empty Grandpa Cat’s entire stash?"

The cubs proudly presented their treasures to her.

All for Mom!

Nina gently stroked their heads.

"Thank you, my little ones."

It truly showed they were her own children—every thought they had was for her.

By evening, the spirit-cat warriors had all arrived.

Their first reaction upon seeing Nina was: She’s so beautiful.

Their second reaction was: Is the young lord blind? How is she "dark"? She’s practically glowing white.

That night, Mino personally went into the kitchen and prepared a table full of dishes Nina loved.

Ming and the spirit-cat males stared in amazement.

Our young lord can actually cook?

Ming sighed.

Looks like the brat has finally grown up. Having a female mate really does make a difference. I probably won’t have to worry about him so much anymore.

When Nina tasted the familiar flavors again, she couldn’t help eating a little more than usual.

Mino’s cooking was just as good as ever.

Kith frowned slightly.

Nina likes the food this cat made that much?

It seemed he would have to work harder on his own cooking skills.

Meanwhile, seeing Nina enjoy the meal he prepared filled Mino with quiet happiness.

Lex and the handsome merfolk nearby, however, were starting to feel anxious.

Another one has arrived...

Lex turned to the merfolk and said quietly, "Tonight, cry a little harder for me."

The merfolk nodded obediently.

"Understood."

Tonight, they would cry as many pearls as possible to present to Lady Nina.

Later that night, after Nina had fallen asleep, Mino quietly slipped out alone.

The next morning.

When Nina stepped outside after waking up, she saw Mino kneeling at the entrance—on a durian. Beside him was a large pile of them.

The cubs, who had woken up with her, immediately lit up with excitement.

Wow! More durian to eat!

"Mino, you..." Nina began, then hesitated. "You don’t have to do this."

"This is my punishment for myself," Mino said.

He only hoped that this might make Nina more willing to forgive him.

Nina sighed softly and said nothing more, simply carrying the cubs toward the washroom.

The cubs cheered him on enthusiastically.

"Go, Uncle Mino! Kneel a little longer—we love eating durian!"

Odian, Viann, and the others also brightened visibly.

Another day with durian.

Ming felt absolutely no sympathy for Mino.

Serves that brat right for causing all this himself.

Still, he secretly hoped Nina would forgive him soon—so he could start holding little spirit-cat cubs in the future.

Though of course, he loved the other cubs as well.

For the spirit-cat warriors, this was their first time seeing durian, and they found the strange household rule fascinating.

But once they tasted it, they couldn’t help marveling.

This family rule... is actually wonderful.

***

Far away, in the Spirit Valley of the Wildlands.

A massive crimson nine-tailed fox was locked in fierce battle with three enormous black-and-white spirit beasts.

Finch was attempting to break through their defenses and seize the treasure they guarded.

The spirit beasts immediately intercepted him.

He unleashed blazing torrents of fire toward them, forcing them to scatter.

Seeing the opening, Finch activated his illusion ability. The spirit beasts were instantly trapped in hallucinations and froze in place.

Taking advantage of the moment, he dashed through their defensive circle and snatched the crimson crystal glowing like cinnabar from the center.

The beasts soon regained their senses.

When they realized their treasure had been stolen, they erupted in fury and chased after him.

They quickly caught up, surrounding him and cutting off his escape.

Finch summoned flames again, trying to blast his way out of the encirclement, but the spirit beasts refused to relent. They were determined to reclaim their treasure.

With a furious roar, Finch gathered his energy and unleashed a raging inferno that swept toward them.

The beasts were forced to retreat, though several were burned and cried out in pain.

Finch tried to escape in that instant.

But the enraged beasts lunged forward and clamped down on his tails, refusing to let him flee.

He had already exhausted too much energy earlier in the fight and was beginning to weaken.

If he didn’t escape now... he might die here.

He launched another attack, but the beasts didn’t dodge. They clung stubbornly to him as if determined to drag him down with them.

Finch exploded with power once more, flames roaring outward.

Yet the beasts still refused to release him—instead biting even harder.

Left with no other choice, Finch glanced at the tails trapped in their jaws.

His heart hardened.

With all his strength, he yanked free and three tails tore away from his body.

Gritting his teeth against the searing pain, he unleashed another burst of fire to slow their pursuit, then immediately fled.

The spirit beasts burst through the flames and continued the chase—but the thief had already escaped.

Their furious roars shook the valley as they were forced to return in defeat.

Far away, Finch looked down at the spirit crystal in his hand.

A faint smile curved his lips.

He had finally obtained it.

Spirit crystals were treasures capable of amplifying the power of a spirit pearl’s owner—far more useful than primal stones. This was a secret known only among the fox clan.

Kith is searching for primal stones for Nina...

Then I’ll find spirit crystals for her.

Anything the other males could do for Nina, he could do as well.

He would make sure Nina saw his devotion.

Clutching the crystal tightly, Finch turned toward the direction of the tribe and staggered forward with his severely wounded body.
