Abandoned by the Alpha, I Became the Lycan King's Mate-Chapter 374 Standoffs
[Margaret’s Perspective]
Aiden’s face turned red with anger as I rebuked him with a single sentence. He looked at me and shouted, "You’re ungrateful! Do you think you are still the high and mighty Lycan Queen? If it weren’t for the master’s instructions to treat you well, do you think you could still be sitting here comfortably?"
"You don’t even look at the wounds on that boy; did the master spare him a glance? If not for..."
"Shut up, Aiden!"
The fervent Aiden was suddenly interrupted by Henry. His face flushed with indignation, but he still obediently closed his mouth as Henry commanded.
I coldly glanced at Aiden in front of me and then turned my head aside, coldly saying, "How ridiculous. According to your logic, should I also be grateful to Henry? Do I need his absurd ’kind treatment’?"
After I finished speaking, I looked up at Henry, who was sitting opposite me, sneered, and continued, "Stop playing these utterly hypocritical games. I’m not buying it!"
"Margaret!"
Brand suddenly spoke up at this point, cutting off my words. He looked at me and shook his head slightly, his eyes filled with worry and disapproval.
I knew what Brand was thinking. He was worried about my injuries and the child in my womb.
But I couldn’t accept Henry’s hypocritical favors; feeling his extra concern only made me feel nauseated.
I remained silent, my face clearly showing my refusal. Even Lillian, who was usually oblivious to other people’s expressions, could notice my disgust toward Henry at this moment.
She smirked in schadenfreude, but the next second, Austin warned her with a look.
The room became extremely quiet for a while, like a pool of stagnant water.
Ultimately, the one who broke this silence was Henry himself. He gestured for Aiden to step back and slowly stood up, looking at me.
As he approached, I didn’t move but began to ponder other things, like who was the woman who had been probing me earlier? Why did she leave as soon as Lillian and her group entered? Why didn’t she let me and Brand see her face?
This woman held a very high status and had an ambiguous and intimate attitude toward Henry, yet her actions were secretive. If I wasn’t mistaken, she was likely the mastermind behind Poison Snake Island that Donald had mentioned before.
"Maybe I shouldn’t have let her see you; that was my oversight," Henry suddenly said to himself while standing in front of me.
Instinctively, I looked up, quickly realizing who Henry was referring to. My gaze toward Henry sharpened. After a moment’s thought, I decided to skip over that topic, "The earlier abduction of Licia was also done by your people, right? I hadn’t seen it before, but you seem to have a knack for this kind of job!"
I said lightly, my tone filled with some confusion, "How did you know about our whereabouts? Could it be that you still have spies in the Royal City?"
Henry seemed quite pleased that I had started talking. A smile spread across his face as he squatted down to my level. Being so close was already beyond normal interaction, but I knew I couldn’t back down—a step back would signify fear and cowardice.
"Who said Licia was ’abducted’? Couldn’t she have gone with someone willingly?" Henry’s gaze drifted across my face, making me feel as if ants were crawling all over me.
We had not ruled out the real reason behind Licia’s disappearance, and one possibility was precisely what Henry had just mentioned—Licia went with them voluntarily!
So, the issue reverted to the original question, what made Licia make such a choice? If it was only because Henry was her nephew, then Donald, her own son, would have been more significant. Any reasonable person would know how to choose between the two, right?
I was genuinely curious about how Licia thought. My mother-in-law seemed to possess some unconventional ways of thinking.
"I despise the Werewolf Royal City deeply; how could I have spies there?"
As Henry spoke, a hint of ruthlessness flashed in his eyes, but then he suddenly laughed and continued, "I really don’t like engaging in such schemes of turning people against each other. As for your maid, Ruth, that was a necessary evil."
Hearing this, I glanced at Austin beside me, my lips curling into a sarcastic smile.
Henry was a lunatic full of lies. If he disliked inciting others to betray friends and relatives, then what about Angel, Austin, and even Licia?
I really didn’t want to listen to his nonsense anymore. The expression in my eyes was utterly dismissive, "What did you offer Ruth to bewitch her? She doesn’t seem like someone who would easily betray me."
"Was that monster that could knock over a car your new ’creation’? Sometimes I really wonder if the Moon goddess is sleeping too soundly, forgetting to punish you, this devilish beast!"
