Captured By The Cold Detective (BL) - Chapter 204: Can’t Get Taller
"Fuck! They finally made a move!" The officers were so agitated that they shot up standing. Even a football match couldn’t have made them react so passionately like this. "What’s in there? Where are they going?!"
Fortunately, though he was seriously lacking sleep, Rong Simo still had the wits to copy all of the surveillance footage from the day before. After that, they switched into a few surveillance footage from different angles, yet from the beginning to the end... the little officer did not show up again. It was like he had mysteriously vanished into thin air once he went off the radar...
"Impossible!" Rong Simo spat out with zeal. "I don’t believe that someone could disappear just like this!"
Li Zhi nodded, his expression grave. Indeed, a real person could not just vanish with a poof, but unfortunately, they were dealing with someone with extremely high awareness of cameras and anti-reconnaissance skill here. They knew the blind spots of the CCTVs like the back of their hands and used it to their best advantages.
"Wait a moment," an officer suggested tentatively. "He might have gone into the bathroom to change his appearance for all we know. However, there’s no way he can change his height and bone structure, right? What if we investigate it from there?"
It was a good point, but...
Everyone looked at the crowded lobby and already felt like their eyes were bleeding. Doctors, nurses, patients and their family members mingled with each other. Moreover, once in a while a new group of medical personnel would rush out to receive an emergency patient only to come in with a few additional people. The imposter could have melded himself into one of these groups and took advantage of the chaotic moment to exit the hospital. Searching for them like this... it was no different than trying to find a needle in the haystack!
Everyone was anxious. They could not wait to catch this person as soon as possible. Yet the more anxious they were, the quicker they lost their cool and the more errors they might make.
Li Zhi’s gums itched and he had an overwhelming urge to smoke. He glanced at the clock and saw that it was already time for them to get off work. Sadly, they were fated to pull another all-nighter yet again. Now that there was Wu Liang’s murder case, the discovery of Qin Zhen’s corpse and the reappearance of the imposter... don’t even think of sleep if they still wanted to keep their job!
Li Zhi heaved out a sigh. No, they could not keep going like this. Everyone was too agitated and the atmosphere was no longer conducive for a discussion.
"Let’s take a break," his voice cut through the murmurs and whispers in the air. "Order a takeout, go to a nearby restaurant or whatever. Calm your heads down for a bit and we will gather here in an hour. As for you..." he patted Rong Simo’s shoulder. "Go to sleep. I get tired just by looking at you."
"Ah, you’re right..." Rong Simo rubbed his dry eyes. "I think I need to rest a little or else I’m going to lose ten years of my life."
Now that the two Captains had spoken, the rest of the officers could only comply. Li Zhi nodded, stood up and walked out of the meeting room. He did not go back to his office but instead climbed the stairs step by step toward the rooftop.
The fresh air managed to cool his head down a bit. He reached into his pocket, fished out a cigarette and lit it up. He took a deep inhale, let the tobacco fill his lungs, and only then could he breathe a little easier. Squinting his eyes, he stared at the breathtaking sunset far in the distance that burst out through the gap between towering skyscrapers. Just like this, the whole city looked very beautiful and serene, as if unperturbed by the dark current brewing underneath...
Behind him, a quiet voice sounded, snapping him out of his reverie. "Captain."
Li Zhi turned sideways and caught sight of Kang Guanyu from the corner of his eyes. "Not going out to eat with the others?" His voice was a little hoarse due to smoking.
"No, we decided to order a takeout. I placed an order on your behalf too. It’s your favorite black pepper beef." Kang Guanyu glanced at him furtively then decided to come up and stand beside him. Li Zhi saw that the wind was blowing from his side and moved back a little so as to prevent the silly guy from inhaling second-hand smoke.
Apparently, Kang Guanyu did not appreciate it a bit because he also retreated until they were side by side again. "Captain, aren’t you tired of smoking? How many sticks have you had today?"
Li Zhi was amused by his displeased demeanor. He pinched the cigarette between his fingers and let it hang by his side, sighing. "I get more tired if I don’t smoke."
"Still..." Kang Guanyu grumbled under his breath. "You’re going to get lung cancer sooner or later if you keep this up..."
The wind was quite strong up here, plus Kang Guanyu’s voice was too soft and small, not even louder than a mosquito buzz. Li Zhi only caught a few unclear words. "What did you say?"
"Nothing!" Kang Guanyu straightened up and stammered lightly. "I just... ah right, I want to ask your opinion about the imposter!"
The corner of Li Zhi’s lips twitched into a very faint smile. Unable to help it, he reached out to ruffle Kang Guanyu’s hair. His tone was mildly amused, "I call a short break so that you don’t have to think about work and now, you’re following me up here just to ask about this?"
Kang Guanyu became more embarrassed now that Li Zhi pointed it out. Just now, he was so flustered that he instantly blurted out the first thing that came to his mind. But... But how was he supposed to tell Li Zhi that he came up here because he thought that the Captain’s back looked gloomy and he wanted to cheer him up? No, he could not say it. It was just too embarrassing!
"You..." he grabbed Li Zhi’s wrist and tugged the man’s broad palm away from his head. He pretended to be angry and with his flushed cheeks, it actually looked a bit convincing. "Captain, do you know that a man’s head can’t be casually touched?!"
"No," Li Zhi replied with an amused look. Then he pressed on the bristling Kang Guanyu’s head a few more times. "What about it?"
Kang Guanyu choked out, "Later, I... I won’t be able to grow taller!"
Hearing this, Li Zhi could not resist a laugh. "How much taller do you want to be? As high as the electric pole?" The most important question should be ’do you think you can still get taller at this age?’ However for fear of making a certain someone cry, he sensibly refrained himself from saying it.
Kang Guanyu was in a bit of daze when he saw Li Zhi’s rare laugh. He could not even get angry at the man’s teasing words. "Just..." he said bashfully. "Just as tall as Jung-Hwa Hyung should be okay..."
Li Zhi arched his brow. Wasn’t this guy’s goal a little too ambitious? He wanted to be as tall as a Superior Alpha who had a strict training regimen, explosive fighting power and ripped muscles? Haha. Well, there’s nothing wrong with dreaming. A man should pin his dream on the sky, and only then could it remain a dream.
Li Zhi snubbed out his cigarette and tossed it to the nearby bin. "Let’s go down and see if the takeout has arrived yet." He took the lead and turned toward the door, and that’s why he did not realize the disappointed look on Kang Guanyu’s eyes as he mumbled out an ’oh’.
Unfortunately, even if Li Zhi had seen it, he wouldn’t have thought anything more about it either because his mind was full of Kang Guanyu’s question. He had deliberately left it hanging, unanswered, simply because he had a terrifying possibility he dared not think of.
Earlier, rather than searching for where the imposter had gone, he was more interested in knowing why that person had gone to Yuyang Hospital Center only to abandon his identity there. Was it only to drive Wu Yuan there? No, there must be another reason why.
And when he thought of Yuyang Hospital Center, he would be reminded of the bandages around Mu Yuze’s neck. And when he thought of Mu Yuze, he would be reminded of... his so-called Alpha, Mr. He, whose name was written on the 510 murder case’s crime scene. Mr. He, whose medical record was filled with examination results from Yuyang Hospital Center.
He knew that his doubt was completely without any basis, but if... if he were to check the hospital’s record after this and saw He Juan’s name in the list of patients, what should he do?
Could he still take it as a mere coincidence?
Or... did He Juan really have something to do with the imposter?
Li Zhi heaved out another sigh. It seemed like he needed to have another private meeting with Mu Yuze. So far, Mu Yuze’s work ethic has been impeccable and his results have been brilliant. Li Zhi only hoped that he would be able to maintain this cool-headed state when it came to his Alpha...
